Resident jailbreak expert Reza is ready to help you upgrade your current jailbreak for 4.3.1. The untethered jailbreak tools for iOS are ready and in the wild. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your jailbroken iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, you can grab several of the new features by grabbing 4.3.1.

redsn0w is one of the tools you can use to perform your upgrade – or new jailbreak. redsn0w is a multi-platform jailbreak and unlock tool created by the iPhone Dev Team. redsn0w is simple to use, and supports all current iPhone and iPod touch devices which use at least firmware 3.0.

ultrasn0w is another tool that can be used to accomplish the same task. This unlock will work on iPhone4 baseband 01.59 and 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04. If you have trouble finding ultrasn0w within Cydia, add this repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com.

So why would you want to unlock your device to begin with? Many people enjoy the Apple hardware but prefer a more open software experience. They want to change the way things are done on their iDevice and even add some functionality that may not have already been there. It’s important to note that doing this is NOT illegal, but it does void your Apple warranty. You should always unlock or jailbreak at your own risk, and realize that no one can be held liable if you receive less-than-desirable results.

If you have an unlocked iPhone, you’re going to want to stay away from doing a straight upgrade. There are alternate update methods you can find in order to help you do some custom patching of the iOS before updating. Or, you can also use Tiny Umbrella to block your baseband and allow this upgrade.

If you’re ready to upgrade, 4.3.1 is great due to the hotspot features alone. It allows you to share your 3G signal with your iPad and other devices. With the iPad, it’s super cool because the GPS functionality from your phone will carry over into your iPad.

Have you updated your jailbroken device yet? What has your experience been like?

Galaxy Music Player to be Unveiled by Samsung During CES

Samsung has now revealed that they are definitely bringing some hot new goodies to CES, 2011. Yours truly is going to get a nice first-hand look at these sweet little music players. I will be live streaming during the event from the Grand Lobby, and plan to grab someone from Samsung so that all of you can see these little babies close-up, as well. The Galaxy Player is based on the success of their Galaxy S phone offering, and is said to come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB storage capacities.

According to early reports, the Android-based music player packs a lot of punch into a slick-looking device. Features purported on board include:

1GHz CPU

4-inch Super Clear LCD screen supporting up to WVGA resolution (800×480)

Wi-Fi capabilities

Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity options

3.2 MP rear camera and rear-facing camera for video chatting

GPS

HD video playback

microSD card slot

Of course, the device will also be able to access the Android Market and the Samsung Apps store – all while hiding away a nifty 1200mAh removable battery.

It’s worth noting that Samsung is on track to sell upwards of 10 million Galaxy S handsets – why wouldn’t a music player with similar specs be able to do the same? Many of you out there have been clamoring for something other than an iPod touch which will have many of the same features – yet stay away from iTunes. Could this Android-based device be what you have been waiting for?

The iPod is a specific brand of MP3 player. EVER. OTHER. device has been lumped together – as far as this store is concerned – as simply “mp3.” The merchant obviously feels nothing else will make them money like the iPod will.

This happens quite often in stores all around Seattle and other cities I have traveled to. Are you seeing the same types of favoritism towards Apple products where you live?

David created this fantastic screencast to give all of you some tips and tricks for your iPhone and iPod touch that you may not have known about.

Double Tap for Music – When in the lock screen and listening to music, double tap your home button. It will bring up a small menu of things to do.

Experience Music Differently – When in your iPod, you can do a number of things, such as shake the device to shuffle the play list.

Monitor Data Usage – Go into Settings and check your data usage under general and see the stats on what you’ve done on your phone. You’ll find out how much data you have used, how many texts you have sent and etc.

Spotlight Search – When on the home screen, slide your finger to the right and the search screen will show up. It’s simple to find a song, file or contact in an instant.

How to Take a Screen Shot – To take a screen shot, hold the Lock button and the Home button at the same time. The screen shot will appear in your Photos folder.

Accessibility Options – This tip is for people who may need to have larger text on the screen.

White on Black (Invert Colors) – Inverting the colors looks great, and is easier on the eyes for some people.

Delete and Move Apps – To move an app, hold your finger down on the app until it starts to shake. Move it out of the folder it’s in. Click the Home button to finish. To delete an app, hold your finger down on the app and then click the little red x in the corner.

How to Caps Lock – Double click your shift button. Once it turns blue, you are in Caps Lock mode.

How to Clear History – Go into your Settings and scroll down to Safari. At the bottom of the screen, clear your History, Cookies and Cache.

Turn of Notifications – Go into Settings and click Notifications. This will bring up a list of the apps on your device. Slide the notification to “off” if you don’t want to receive these updates.

There you have it – eleven excellent tips and tricks for anyone who uses an iDevice – from beginners to power users.

Thanks, David, for the excellent tutorial.

Give the characters a face using your camera or photo library… or choose from the app’s Face Gallery of Cuddly Animals, Icons and Creepy Monsters.
Yes, I had it sitting there on my desk for a few days. Had to let the thing ripen, ya know? Anyway, this morning, in front of the live virtual audience (were you there?), I opened ‘er for the first time and copped a feel.

Initial impressions? Generally good, although I’m a bit disappointed there’s no LED flash and no ability to view actual battery usage percentage… but it shoots damn nice video. I will likely give this new iPod away at some point, as I have with older models. Stay tuned for details on that in the near future.

I’ve had iPod-like capabilities with my iPhone 4. This model interested me for one specific reason – the cameras. I’m often out and about, and need to record or capture something. If I want to record something that is on my iPhone, I can’t use the camera that is on the iPhone! The iPod touch will work perfectly for this, don’t you think?

I have to say that the little Finger Tips booklet that comes with my Apple products is cool as hell. The name is great and the tips inside are usually great, as well.

It was easy to tell that this is the 64GB model. It weighs approximately 32GB more than the 32GB model, and about 48GB more than the 16GB model. Thankfully, there’s a math app floating around in iTunes somewhere. It took a lot of fingers and toes to figure that out.

The first thing I noticed when taking the new iPod touch out of its box for the first time is how slim this little baby is. I was actually surprised by the thinness, even though I had read the specs for myself. Knowing the thickness of a new gadget doesn’t really give you a feel for what it’s like in the hand… until it’s IN your hand!

I will definitely need a good case for this, and a screen protector. Fingerprints drive me completely batshit! I also like to have good protection, so let me know what cases you recommend for this newest iteration of the iPod touch.

The nice thing about already having an iPhone and more than 800 apps is that I can sync everything right to this new iPod touch. As soon as I sync it with my iTunes account, all of my apps and data will be automagically placed onto the device.

My next question for you is: what should I do now with the iPod? Is there something I’m missing? Is there more to it than this?

Hey MKHCB,

Coupons for the new iPod Touch don’t exist, but MacMall’s prices are 4-5% lower than Apple Store and include free shipping on orders over $50. MacMall has the lowest prices on the newest iPods and Apple TV:

iPhone 4 vs iPod touch – Video Camera Quality

Apple has finally created an iPod touch with a camera built-in! Is it a “Flip” killer? Yes and no.

I received an email today from community geek, David Myers:

You asked in your video “What should I do now?“; And I have a suggestion. The camera on the iPhone 4 and the camera on the iPod Touch are different in size and amount of megapixels. Although the iPod Touch claims 720p HD video recording on the specifications page, it has no reference to megapixels, like the iPhone 4 specifications page.

I want to suggest you do something you’ve done in the past; Two side-by-side video recording the same object/s form both the iPod Touch and iPhone 4, one in dark lighting conditions and one in bright lighting conditions; As well as a still-image comparison test.

I’ll do a still image comparison test separately, but here are the results from a quick indoor test between the iPhone 4 and iPod touch – and each one of them handled lower lighting conditions admirably (for a pocket camera, mind you).

The biggest differences between the iPod touch and iPhone 4′s video recording capabilities are pretty cut-and-dry:

The iPhone 4 produces a sharper video image, overall.

The iPod touch camera lens has a noticeably wider field of view (in video recording mode, NOT with stills).

The color reproduction in the iPhone 4 seems a bit warmer (and true) compared to that of the iPod touch.

The audio recorded on the iPod touch seems to be a bit more rich (with bass).

While both do maintain ~24 frames per second in low light (indoor) conditions, the iPhone 4 produces less noisy output.

So, yes – I’d say the iPhone 4 edges out the iPod touch in terms of video recording quality. That said, I’d be more inclined to use an iPod touch in interview situations – with richer sound and the ability to get closer to the subject without sacrificing the composition (with the iPod touch’s slightly wider field of view).

I’ve long believed that the iPhone has been a “Flip” killer – given that I’m more inclined to carry my phone with me than I would a second camera. Still, if I was to carry a second camera with me from this point forward, it will likely be the iPod touch – simply because the controls are familiar, it works well in low light, and I’ll have all the charging accessories with me, anyway.

Don’t take my word for it, though – judge for yourself!

Why the hell are people still buying iPod shuffles, anyway? If anything, the new iPod nano should replace all use cases for an iPod shuffle – minus price, which is relatively negligible. I’m not kidding when I ask why anyone is using them, folks. Take a good look at all of the new iPod models, and tell me WHY someone would feel the need to buy this particular device.

Sure, they’re only about fifty bucks. And yes, they come in several cute colors. Whoa… you can even put a couple of songs on one of these babies and clip it to your belt. Oh, wait! You can get it engraved! Perhaps I was a bit hasty in my judgment.

Nah.

In the age of the touch screen, who would want click controls? The only function I can find on the official Apple Store page beyond playing music is having an annoying pre-recorded voice announce the title or artist of the song you’re listening to… in any of 25 languages.

If you’re going to spend money for a music player, save some extra pennies and choose the nano instead.

Please Call It the iPod Touch

Look, I’m a tolerant man. When Pixie wakes me up and asks for a trip to the little doggy’s room at 3am, I don’t yell at her. If Wicket throws up on my MacBook Pro, I forgive him. Eventually.

But seriously, I am out of forgiveness for people who can’t figure out the name of Apple’s iPod Touch.

According to the Apple press event yesterday, it’s the most popular iPod and the #1 game player in the world. It’s been used for over 1.5 billion game and entertainment downloads. It’s cute. It’s thin. It even has an HD video camera and video editing now.

Yet people still get its name wrong. So let me explain it for you in a nice, simple way. There are even pictures to help you out.

iPod Touch

This is a cool Apple device that you can use to play games, listen to music, and watch videos.

You can even use it with FaceTime and Game Center to connect to friends who have iPods or iPhones.

What you can’t do is call it the iTouch. That is not its name. Please call it the iPod Touch.

I touch.

This is a simple sentence. It’s made up of the pronoun I and the verb touch.

You can also use those words in more complex sentences like "I touch the base whenever I hit a home run," or "When I think about you, I touch myself."

Although on second thought, if you’re touching yourself, just keep that between you and your naughty little hands. The rest of us really don’t need to know.

Eye Touch

Stop that. What the heck is wrong with you? Why would you stick your finger in my eye?

Jeepers. You do have naughty hands, don’t you?

Seriously, dude, eye touching is completely inappropriate.

Now, enough of that. Don’t make me call Wicket. He’ll throw up on your computer.

Are we clear now? The little music/video device is an iPod Touch, not an iTouch.

I won’t be responsible for my actions if you call it an iTouch one more time. In fact, I’ll take suggestions. How should I punish people who call it the iTouch?

Just when you thought the iPod nano couldn’t get any smaller, Apple is introducing one that is 46% smaller! This thing is really tiny. They took away the click wheel, and have made the device into a touch screen. This is perfect for an entire set of people who want something small that they can take with them on the go. One big drawback is that there is no longer a camera on the nano.

I’ve never been one who felt the need to have an iPod nano. If you’re someone who values a smaller device, you should be quite happy with this. If you already have an iPod Touch or iPhone, it may not make sense for you.

Apple has an array of products that fit just about every demographic out there. There are any number of portable devices with varying sizes, styles and storage capacity.

If you want to touch your music, then the iPod nano may just be for you. How many of you out there have had an older nano? Were you happy with it, and are you interested in the new one?

The hack is triggered when visit a web address in your Safari browser that automatically opens a PDF document. Contaminated documents include an infected font file that causes an error that gives the hacker control of your device. Once the hack is triggered, it can delete files, download your data, or install applications.

libimobiledevice</strong has but one goal: to be able to manage your iPhone, iPod or iPad right from within Linux on your desktop. Unlike other projects, it does not depend on using any existing proprietary libraries and does not require jailbreaking. The application will allow you to access your device’s file system, retrieve your information, backup or restore the device, manage your icons and apps and synchronize music and video to the device.

The latest release of libimobiledevice has been tested with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad – all versions which run firmware up to 3.2. It appears to work flawlessly, and won’t cause issues by having you jailbreak your device.

The program is open-source (and won’t cost you a dime). If you’re a Linux user who also happens to own an Apple mobile device, I highly urge you to check out libimobiledevice. Let us know how your experience goes.
