This is Google TV. I am more than grateful to the team at Google for sending this unit to me, and for showing me how I can help all of YOU win one for yourself. I have to tell you – this piece of hardware is simply stunning. The quality is far beyond what I had expected. Besides, what could be cooler than watching YouTube videos on a big screen television?

Google TV is a new platform for television that combines your normal TV programming with a full web browser, Android apps and a simple way to search through all of it. It’s even easy to switch between TV and the web without having to change inputs on your television set.

With Google Chrome and Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Google TV lets you access everything on the web. Watch your favorite web videos, view photos, play games, check fantasy scores, chat with friends, and do everything else you’re accustomed to doing online.

If you’re a video producer like I am, you’re going to love this. Google TV gives web video stars the change to be a TV star. Google TV users can even bookmark your YouTube channel onto their TV home screen. This makes your content appear one click away from whatever they are already watching.

Google TV will come pre-loaded with apps like Netflix, Twitter, CNBC, Pandora, Napster, NBA Game Time, Amazon Video On Demand and Gallery. Starting early next year, apps from Android Market will work on Google TV as well. As I already said in the video above, the quality and clarity of this Sony television is just – fantastic. I cannot imagine anything better to surf the web with, including my beloved Mac Pro and dual 30″ monitors. This TV set puts those to shame. Seriously.

Google TV vs Apple TV

Are you watching TV right now? Seriously, is there a television on in your room or house at this moment? I honestly don’t know about the future about the television. The future of TV is going to be on the Internet. There’s a reason I publish everything I do to YouTube. About one in three of every video on the Internet is watched on YouTube. There’s a good chance one of mine will show up.

Someone in our chat room asked if the Internet is going to destroy tv. I happen to be using my television as a monitor, since there’s a computer hooked up to it. I also have my Xbox plugged into it. I can watch my cable service hooked up to it. Now, I can watch my content pretty much anywhere I want. To me, it boils down to the content. A “tv” is a machine. Why does it matter where you watch that content? Why does it have to be on a television? I can pull up any show I want to watch right on my computer and watch as I work.

It’s not even “the future”… it’s the present. Television shows and movies can be watched on the Internet. Within ten years, there will be a huge fundamental shift in the way that we view our content. It will take better broadband, yes. However, the Internet isn’t going to destroy “television”. It may lessen the actual mechanism you think of when you think of the word ‘tv’.

What is Joost?

http://live.pirillo.com/ – The popularity of Internet Television is rising. Community members Alex recently found software for sale on eBay that would give you the ability to watch "6000+" channels of television on your computer for free – is this true or nothing but short YouTube clips?

Generally, this seems to be a program which is nothing more than a repackaged web browser that displays websites that have live streaming video.

We'd recommend staying away from this piece of software, and instead getting Miro – formerly known as Democracy TV. It has a ton of free videos and live streams, it's easier to use than iTunes, and it's totally free. Check it out today.

http://live.pirillo.com/ – Watching live television over your smart phone isn’t as difficult as you might imagine: all you need is an Internet connection and the Slingbox.

The Slingbox is a piece of hardware that takes you cable or satellite signal and retransmits it over the Internet, so anything that can access the Internet can also access the Slingbox. That means that your laptop, desktop, and smart phone can display what’s on TV.

The Slingbox optimizes the stream for your connection, so your smart phone will receive a lower resolution video than your laptop or desktop will. Their software works for OS X, Windows, and even Linux (although the Linux port is a community project and not an official Slingbox release).
