You asked for it! And, even if you didn’t ask for it, you’re getting it, anyway. I did the first real home office tour at the beginning of 2009 (and didn’t think much of it at the time). Well, I didn’t do one in 2010 – and some of y’all really got pissy about it. This oughta tide you over until 2012.

What would your office look like if you could do anything you wanted when it comes to decor? Would you go crazy geeking things out, or would you keep things simple?

Home Office Tour in Google SketchUp

Jack has been a busy little bee. He’s been playing around with Google SketchUp, and managed to create a fairly decent sketch of my home office.

According to McCall and Associates, “SketchUp is the finest (and most innovative) tool available for anyone designing anything from coffee pots to skyscrapers.” Use it to redecorate a room in your home before spending money on things that end up looking horrible. Create a model of your city for Google Earth. The only limit to what you can create with SketchUp is your own imagination.

You can build models from scratch or download what you need to get started. People all over the world share what they’ve made on the Google 3D Warehouse, and the hope is that you’ll share your creations, as well.

Are you a LEGO maniac, too? I was pleasantly surprised when community member Zane Harnish built my home office with the free LEGO Digital Designer. Even though you can buy this kit to build for yourself, I wouldn’t recommend it – based on price, as I mentioned in the video. Can someone build a model of my home office that is substantially cheaper?

Oh, and… I know I slaughtered the meme – and realized it after I uploaded the video, so I’m not going to reupload. I leave it to you to give us a better “yo dawg.” :)

LEGO Home Office

Many of you have asked over the years where you can buy the various pieces of furniture and equipment that I have here in my home office. Sadly, some of the items are no longer sold. My chair, for instance, stopped being manufactured quite awhile ago. This makes it difficult for you to create a replica of your own – unless you want to build one with LEGO bricks. Thanks to Zane Harnish, you can do just that!

The office looks pretty dang close to being perfect, don’t you think? You’ll see my little Mini-Fig me sitting next to my Dell monitors and the iMac. If you look closely, you’ll even see Wicket and Pixie hanging around… just like they usually are in my real office. The Macbook Pro is sitting in the middle of my desk, and the “curtains” are red. Heck, Zane even managed to get the Tix clocks in there!

Have you ever created a LEGO set of your own? You can design your own and have it for sale in their stores. Using the LEGO Digital Designer 3 software you can design and build any model you can imagine. Simply download the free software, start building or choose one of the starter models, then design your own unique packaging! Once you upload your creation, you’ll be able to buy the kit… or open it up for others to grab such as with my home office.

LEGO Home Office

Adam constructed my office entirely out of LEGO bricks in his spare time. I think this is a pretty decent representation of what you’ll find inside my home office, don’t you?

This is a video tour of my office that I shot about a year ago now. Take a look at the various things you see in the video, and then compare them to Adam’s LEGO versions. Pretty close, eh? The only thing missing is a Chris Pirillo action figure sitting at the desk.

I love to surround myself with things I can use – and that look good on my desk. When the folks at Useful Things sent me a care package recently, I was only too happy to try out their nifty little offerings! I was especially happy with the staple-less stapler. That’s right… it actually “staples” papers together without using actual staples! It’s magic, I tell ya!

They also sent me a very cool pair of scissors. They aren’t really scissors at all! There are 18 blades all slapped together to help me easily shred a credit card or papers.

The next thing was To-Do Tattoos. Basically… lick it and stick it to the back of your hand. You then use a pen to write on your to-do list to write in what it is you need to remember. Now you don’t have to carry around a list or piece of paper.

The last item in my little gift box was a really cool looking business card holder. It moves and bends in many different ways. Business cards or pieces of paper are held to it using a small magnet. It looks great on my desk with all my other silver items!

Apparently, my desk makes a lot of people envious. I’m not sure why, unless you factor in all the gizmos and gadgets that I have in here. I’ve uploaded pictures of my desk before, as well as videos of my home office. Ricardo told me about a website where you can talk about your desk!

On Deskography, you can upload a photo of your desk and home office setup, to share it with others. The idea is to be able to invite people from around the world to see where you work. See where people you admire spend their days and nights. Thinking about redoing your office? Browse photos of desks that people in your industry have uploaded.

If you want to brag about your desk, why not upload a picture of your own? I know some of you have sent pictures of your setup to me, and I think it’s great. It would be more exciting to share it with the entire community, right?

How Not to Put Together a Home Office

My home office is still coming together… at a snail’s pace. Peter Cirigliano’s advice could’ve come a bit sooner for me:

Chris – About 8 or 9 months ago, I was looking to improve my home office. I was getting a new computer that had dual monitors and the slap-it-together-yourself hutch that I had would not accommodate that and provide desk space. I started looking at the mass merchandising places such as Staples, Office Depot, or Office Max and was disappointed with their offerings. In addition to the crappy fiberboard kits, they had modular systems that could be bought piece-wise and assembled, but the people selling them split their time selling paper clips, ballpoint pens, and other stuff – so no real competency was found. Moreover, the prices were fairly high when you finally cobbled something together and you had to cart and/or assemble yourself.

Instead, I found a local business that catered mostly to small and medium-sized businesses. The place operated out of what looked like a garage-like roll-up in an industrial part of town. However, office furniture was all they did and they knew their business and their product. They made useful suggestions and things for me to consider. In addition, they brought everything over, charged nothing extra for delivery (if order was over $500), assembled everything on-site drilling cable access holes where I needed them, placing pencils draws and keyboard slide precisely where I wanted them, and removed my old hutch to the garage. In the final analysis, they were cheaper than what I would have paid for– even more so when you consider the value-added service and the higher quality material that comprised the furniture. (Since they sell to businesses and offices, their furniture is more durable.)

While this place is too far from your residence, you may have similar types of businesses in your local area. Their “showroom” is abysmally dreary– mostly piles of assembled and unassembled furniture and chairs in a garage setting– but you probably don’t want to pay for the slick store layout of the mass-merchandising outlets, anyway. Better to use that lower overhead and put it into better quality and individual service. I suggest, if you are still in the market, that you seek out one of these places instead.

No, I’m still licking my open office (not to be confused with OpenOffice) wounds. I’ve got another email into Office Depot corporate, as they recently responded to my earlier request with two wholly incorrect order numbers. Unimpressive.
