I’m checking out the newest in products from the folks at Monster – The Beats. Would you believe that Dr. Dre himself sent these to me? Ok, so maybe he didn’t. But it’s still pretty cool to think he might have!

I have reviewed noise canceling headphones a lot. I won’t go on trips without them. I’m not a big fan of earbuds, so I prefer regular headphones. There are a couple of reasons why I like the Beats more than other noise canceling headphones. One is that I love the way they fit perfectly over my ears.

Another thing I love is that I feel completely immersed in whatever I’m listening to. I’ve tried the surround-sound earphones before, but never really heard the surround. With the Beats, I feel completely IN surround sound. It was a completely new experience, and an amazing one.

I love the cabling of these things. I was confused as to why the cabling is separated from the headphones. Then, I took a better look. I noticed a little box attached to the black wire… and was like WHOA! Connect that wire to the headphones, and something like your iPhone. You can use your Beats with your iPhone, and even take calls without having to remove your very comfortable headset!

Lastly, I am happy with the batteries in this set. They take just regular old AA batteries, instead of a proprietary battery. I’ve been on trips where my old headphones would be completely dead and unusable, due to the battery draining itself. That’s so frustrating. With the Beats, I don’t have to worry about that.

There’s also a small mute button on the side. You can just push the button to stop playback of whatever you’re listening to, in order to focus your attention elsewhere. Once you’re done, push the button again and return to your music or podcast.

If you’re going to spend the money for a good music device, then spend the money on a good pair of noise canceling headphones. If you’re asking my opinion in terms of quality and features – you want the Beats.

I happen to love audio – especially when it’s music from the new and exciting GeeksRadio.fm. GeeksRadio is launching on December 15th. It’s made by Geeks – for Geeks. So when I’m listening to music, should I use earbuds, or headphones? I think it’s a matter of personal preference for everyone, really. It depends on your level of comfort, and what your needs are. This particular set of earbuds is compatible with my iPhone. There’s a little button I can push to mute the music and answer a call quickly if one comes in. The headphones also work with pretty much any piece of hardware, so long as it has a standard audio input. This is no regular set of earbuds. These are Coosh headphones.

I hate when you’re walking around or something, and one of the earbuds fall out. Then you have a wire hanging down, and you can’t even hear anything. But with the Coosh, there is this little plastic thingie that will keep them from falling off your ears if the earbud pops out.

On occasion, I’ve asked for your Top 5 tips and tricks. Thanks to bowler4ever for this excellent video email.

Top 5 Tips for Buying A Headset:

• Don’t buy dirt cheap! They break too easily or too soon, they tend to not have any controllers for the microphone and/or headphones (if you have a headset), they tend to not last very long, and the sound quality can be pretty bad and you can get static to no end!
• Buy within your budget! These $300 headsets may look great, but some can go for $45 and can work just as great or even better. So do your homework on these!
• Find a set that looks comfortable for your ears and also look for an adjustable mic (so when you’re not using the mic, you can put it off to the side of the headset). Comfort is EVERYTHING in a headset. Make sure you find a headset that will fit your ears comfortably (preferably ones with the padding around the edge) and make sure they’re not too small, otherwise it’ll just keep falling off (having one with a clip that goes around the ear is a GREAT option, as this problem is vitually eliminated!)
• Make sure the store you buy it at allows you to return it within 1-2 weeks, even if you’ve already opened the product, tried it, and you don’t like it. It makes no sense whatsoever if you buy a headset and try it, but you don’t like it and the store won’t let you return it, ESPECIALLY if they don’t have ones on display that you can try on! Staples is a great place to buy one and it has a 2 week return policy (as far as I know).
• If you have never tried one that plugs in via USB, I strongly recommend you try one, especially if you have a bad sound card or you have none at all, because the drivers are either on a CD or, when plugged in, immediately recognized by the computer and the software gets installed via Plug-and-Play. (There are ones that come with both analog [which is plugged into the sound card] AND USB [via an adapter that comes with the headset]).

Ponzi purchased the world’s most expensive noise cancelling headphones from Bose the other day… which cost as much as her second iPod (actually, third – if you want to count the Shuffle). I gotta admit, they’re quite comfortable on the ears. I’ll have to give ‘em a good spin to decide if I’m going to pick up a pair, too:
