After watching me struggle through Guitar Hero for the first time, my digital friend (Kyle) passed along these Guitar Hero tips:

The jump from medium to hard is the biggest jump you will make in Guitar Hero. When you are making this jump I think that the first two sections are the hardest because you are getting used to the faster pace of the songs and using the orange button.
If you are losing your fingering during this time, try hard to pay attention to the groove on the yellow button because it can be a lifesaver! At first this is going to be really hard and you will probably just not pay attention to it, but after a while when you have gotten used to it a little more, you will find yourself using it.
Another important thing when you get towards the end of hard is your star power. This is a very important weapon and helps a ton! The best time to use it is when you find a spot that you just can’t get past. Usually this will be towards the end of the song, so you should have full star power by then. When you feel the time is right just pull up on that guitar and try your hardest to hit those notes! Most of the time this will get you through that part and you should be able to finish up the rest of the song.
There is no special exercise or some kind of way to get by a song. The only way is to practice! I know you probably practice and are about to throw your guitar against a wall and maybe yourself as well. Trust me, don’t do it! You just have to use practice or play the song a ton of times in a row. Just take it part by part on slow and keep repeating it until you get 65% accuracy. Then if you haven’t guessed already, just do the same on full speed. Once you’re done with that, move on to the next part and repeat the process.
You will know when you are ready to play the song for real because you can just feel that you can do it. I usually go through the tricky parts in groups after I have gone through the whole song in parts just for a little extra practice. Then I usually end up playing through the song in career mode a few times before I finally pass it, and that is a really good feeling!
I really hoped this inspired you to keep practicing until you don’t ever want to hear that song again!

I’ve long teased those of you who play Guitar Hero and Rock Band, so this video was a long time in coming. However, I had never played either of them. So, I decided it was high time to try it out for myself. Are you prepared for the awesomeness that is me?

Even just unboxing the game was overwhelming for me. Keep in mind, I’ve never played something like this – I’m normally a casual gamer! Also, I just don’t have a musical bone in my body. Thank goodness I had a few hundred people hanging out in my chat room, giving me tips and pointers as to how to set this whole thing up. I’d have never made it!

If you’ve been following the game’s progress, you’ll already know how impressive the set list is. From Van Halen to Jimi Hendrix to Joe Satriani to Tool, the lineup of included tracks is mighty impressive. There are even a couple surprises on there, such as Willie Nelson’s live rendition of “On the Road Again”, which actually turned out to be one of the most fun tracks on the disc.
One pretty interesting bit about the track listing is that Activision and Neversoft managed to sign on Tool to contribute three songs. Fans of the band (including myself) are obviously pleased by this, but what’s really worth noting here is that Neversoft worked with the band to create something unique and different than the other content from the game. The songs are originally played in a Tool-specific venue that blends art and content from some of the band’s more recent album work and videos. You don’t even see any band members — it’s just the pulsing, undulating and flowing artwork and the note highways. It’s very cool to see that Neversoft was capable of working with the band so closely and that it was able to portray the art and mood so well.

Now that everything is set up and ready to go – it’s time to play! I already know I can’t sing my way out of a wet paper bag, so I guess I’ll get to that first. What’s your favorite part of Guitar Hero World Tour? Are you a singer? Do you whale on the drums? Or are you a future guitarist?

Now that I’ve become a master at singing and drumming on Guitar Hero World Tour, I decided I was ready to play the guitar. How hard can it be? It’s already obvious that I’m going to be giving up my day job in favor of touring with Nickelback.

I chose to play along with the same Kurt Cobain song. However, I must not have been doing something else right. It was recording strokes, but it wasn’t showing any hits. The guitar has to be defective! That’s the only answer that is possible. The game informed me that I probably needed to blame it on lag, and calibrate my television.

My live chat members informed me I needed to use my thumb and strum along at the same time. Ok! Now we’re cooking with gas! I did such an amazing job that I unlocked two achievements! I bet even Jimi Hendrix would be proud!

Once I made the video of myself singing along with Guitar Hero World Tour, I decided to move up to trying to play the drums. I scored a 94% on the singing part, so maybe this whole drumming thing will be easy! I put the level on “Beginner”, and nearly had heart failure when the game tried to play the song at full speed. No way in heck. They must be on crack!

As the song started, I know people in my chat room were groaning and holding their head. I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing! For one thing, the song was too slow. So, I sped it up. However, I still wasn’t quite sure. I mean, honestly. I don’t have any musical talent whatsoever. I wasn’t sure when or where to hit the sticks even! I begged for help, to no avail. So… I just kept smacking the drumstick how I thought it should be. It’s easy! Really!

With the recording of this video, I lost my Guitar Hero virginity. The first thing I wanted to attempt was to sing. It’s not that bad… right? I have the new Guitar Hero World Tour for my Xbox, so I had to play it live, of course!

Guitar Hero World Tour builds on the existing gameplay from previous Guitar Hero games, in which players attempt to simulate the playing of rock music using special guitar-shaped controllers. World Tour expands beyond the core guitar-based gameplay by introducing the ability to play drums or sing vocals, and supporting the ability for up to four players to play together in a virtual band through these different instruments. Successfully hitting notes increases the player’s or band’s score, as well as increase the “Rock Meter” that represents the song’s performance. Missed notes are not scored and negatively affect the Rock Meter. If the Rock Meter drops too low, the song ends prematurely, with the virtual audience booing the band off stage. Similar to Rock Band, the band shares a common score and scoring multiplier and band performance meter while each player has their own performance metric; the band also shares the same Star Power meter, and all members of the band must perform the appropriate moves at the same time to activate it. A player that performs poorly and reduces their performance meter to zero can still continue to play, but they drain the overall performance meter for the band, requiring the other players to make up for this. Successfully completing a song garners a three to five-star rating based on the accumulated score, and rewards such as in-game money to be used to buy new guitars and outfits for characters.

Geeks have been begging me to start playing either Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I thought that if I’m going to spend my time playing something like that, I want it to be a real musical instrument. I know that learning the hand-eye coordination is a huge plus though. You can develop your skills that way. But have you thought about using your keyboard? Why not check out JamLegend. Cavinder is a long-time community member, and a self-professed “casual gamer”. If you love music, and enjoy gaming… this email goes out to you!

Hey Chris! I just wanted to see if you knew about this game called Audiosurf. I just found it not too long ago myself, and have been enjoying myself to pieces with it. In a nutshell, it’s a a musical game much like Guitar Hero and Rockband. But this one is different in that it’s a puzzle game on a track. Basically how it works is the game sets up random colored blocks down your track, and you have to collect them. To gain points, you have to collect at least 3 of the same color together. The more of the same color you collect, the higher the score.
There’s a couple more things that make the game interesting. You know how Guitar Hero and Rockband flow on a straight track? Not this game. This game has a twisting track to really mess with your game… and make it more fun. Also, if you notice it, the track jumps with the beat of the song. That is also really cool. During a slow part of the song, the track bends upwards. During a heavy, fast part, the track streaks down.
The absolute best part of this game is the music. You know how Guitar Hero and Rockband have a set list of songs you can choose from? This game will play any song thats on your pc. Thats right any song. You pick which song you want to play, it looks at it, determines the difficulty, the traffic(blocks) and how the track will look all within a matter of seconds. The people who made this game did an incredible thing with that right there, and in my opinion did it the right way. You’ll be pulling songs that you normally wouldn’t be listening to anymore to play them on this game.

This sounds like a lot of fun. The free version is definitely worth checking out. I have a feeling many of you will end up buying the whole thing.

Nik recently wrote in to remind us that while playing Guitar Hero is fun, it still is just a game. Here are his reasons for why you should learn to play a real guitar… instead of pretending to on a game.

First and foremost, playing a real instrument is much “cooler” than playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Which one is better to impress people with… being able to play the drum part to Tom Sawyer on Expert level in Rock Band, or being able to do it in real life? You’re not going to be impressing anyone with your digital-rubber- pad-hitting skills. While Rock Band can somewhat teach you how to develop rhythm and coordination, it can’t do much beyond that.
Does being able to beat a really hard song on Expert level accomplish anything other than giving you bragging rights? No, it doesn’t. While playing a real guitar seems to accomplish about the same, you have to look a bit deeper. Playing Guitar Hero involves you pressing buttons whenever a colored square comes up on your TV screen. Playing real guitar requires much more concentration and skill. Besides that, it is also very intellectual in the sense that it has you thinking a lot more. Guitar Hero is based on reaction time. Real guitar is about actually learning a song instead of relying on colored squares.
It’s not like playing a real instrument is all that hard. If people would put the same amount of time and effort into learning a real instrument as they did practicing Guitar Hero, they would become good and have fun in no time. Sure it seems harder, but all you have to do is put your mind to it.
You could actually buy a guitar package complete with books to teach yourself how to play guitar for around the same price as the Guitar Hero package. So why not pick up a real guitar and learn something useful? In the process, you’ll be able to learn a new language… the language of music! Once you can read music, you’ll be able to learn to play any other instrument that exists.
For my final point, I’d just like to say this: why pretend to do something when you could do the real thing? Go and buy a guitar or a drum set, practice really hard, try and meet some other people who play instruments, and form a real band! Then, instead of sitting in your basement tapping some plastic buttons, you can take the stage and play REAL music for a REAL audience! You never know how far you can go if you put your mind to it!

Every day people ask about Guitar Hero tips. I recently received two separate top five tips lists about Guitar Hero. One covers the basics… and the other is more for Experts. Thanks to everyone who keep sending in those lists of tips and tricks. Keep them coming!

Be patient, it takes a bit of time to develop any type of skill. The same goes for learning to play Guitar Hero. You have to first start out on the easy level. Then, as your ability increases, you will be able to move up in difficulty… so take your time!
Use “hammer-ons” and “pull-offs” (HOPO’s). These can help you to make it past some of the games hardest solos. Pretend you have a real electric guitar. When you would hit a note on one string… the string would keep vibrating. As long as the string was still vibrating, you could hit several other notes in a sequence. Well the HOPO’s in Guitar Hero are not much different. When you are playing a song and the notes begin to appear, you will notice that some notes have a black ring with a white middle in the center of the note, while other notes are shiny with just a white center. This is because the notes without black rings (the shiny notes) can be hammered-on or pulled-off. HOPO’s require no strumming, giving your more of a chance to focus on the notes you are hitting instead of strumming (this will also save your strumming arm from getting tired). If you play the Guitar Hero tutorial, it will include a more in-depth lesson on this procedure.
Use Star Power at correct times. When you’re playing on easy or normal modes, you would use Star Power to gain more points and up your score. Now it is time for that to change. On the expert difficulty, you usually have to use Star Power to prevent the dreadful “song failed” screen. Star Power can be a life saver by raising your rock meter. This will prevent failing a song.
Use practice mode. Practice mode may have seemed useless on any other difficulty, but on expert it is a must. It can help you to “nail” those tricky solos, or even just to practice any part of a song. If you use it properly, it will return the favor and you will beat a song you thought you could never pass.
Play different songs. I can’t tell you the countless number of times a friend of mine has told me that he plays his favorite song every day to develop his skill. This is completely wrong to be doing. To develop skill in this game, you need to play every song to become better. You can play “Slow Ride” at 100% , but that won’t help you play any other song in the game.

Hammer-Ons/Pull-Offs: Hammer-ons and pull-offs (HO/PO) are an important part of Guitar Hero. When the center of the note is white (or rather whiter than usual), you can hit it by just pressing the fret button if you successfully hit the last note (instead of hitting the strum bar and the fret as well). This helps for fast scales like the strings found in Cult of Personality. However, relying on this only can get you to fail some songs, which is where the next tip comes in handy.
Alt Strumming: Alt strumming is just strumming rhythmically to the notes instead of using the HO/PO system. This makes it so that if you miss a note, it doesn’t effect the rest of the string. This helps during insanely fast strings like the “First Drizzle” section (I believe that’s what it’s called) in Raining Blood. This is only recommended if you are having trouble passing a song in Career Mode.
Boss Battle Assistance: We all hate boss battles deep inside. The note charts themselves are insane, and it doesn’t help that the boss is constantly throwing power-ups at you. The chart for Lou battle is very fast, but there’s a way to combine tips 5 and 4 to see if you can at least pick up as many power-ups as possible. Get three of them at a time, and just relentlessly hit the boss with them one after the other during the note-heavy sections. This will help in Slash and Tom, but I personally have yet to beat Lou.
Squeezing: Star Power is especially helpful in tough situations where you need to get as much bump up on the rock meter per note as possible. But, for when you’re using Star Power to pick up some points, I recommend trying to squeeze the notes. This is a term that means activating Star Power right before you hit a note string. This will help both your Star Power last as long as possible and help you pick up twice as many points for the note you hit. It might not seem like much, but if you saw HellAshes first FC of Jordan, he didn’t get his high score because he didn’t squeeze his star power. This technique will help you beat those high scores posted on Scorehero.
Practice Mode: This might sound like I’m giving the Guitar Hero creators a pat on the back, but practice mode is probably the greatest feature of the game besides the game itself. Going into practice mode to slow down those tricky riffs until you perfect them helps a ton, and even if you think you’re “too cool” for practice mode, you aren’t. Use it to nail those riffs that would otherwise be impossible, and it can also help you bump up your own level of play.

Long-time community member TuxedoJericho sent in an excellent top five list. They are tips to playing Rock Band… and will work for Guitar Hero, as well! Both of these games are a lot of fun, with varying skill levels. The DVD graphics for this game are simply amazing, as well as the clarity.

If you have any type of pitch control and know how to control the pitch of your voice, then the singing is just for you. You do not need to say the words, or even in the tempo of the song. Just hit the correct pictch and you are golden.
Drums are hard for anyone that is not used to drumming on a set. You have to get the timing with both arms and the feet down. You can not turn off the kick pedal like the demo systems in stores. If you need to, use the guitar or mic to unlock all the songs and then practice the drumming on the difficulties to learn the rhythm for the songs, and then progress to learning what each limb is supposed to do. Also, during some songs, most noticeable in the guitar solos, the singer can whack the mic to represents hit on a tamborine or a cowbell. Even if you are off tempo, or just ignore them all together these do not count against you. Nor does it count against you if you do, or say anything when it’s quet vocal times.
Guitars are very similar to the Guitar Hero games. The only differences in the guitars in this game from the previous games are they have a “pitch/tone selector” button like most guitars. When you go into “overdrive” (which was the old STAR POWER system in the older games), you can select a different pitch/tone by moving the selector. you can different sounds with FLANGER, ECHO, Wah-WAH, and CHORUS. Also, they have added smaller frets farther down the neck. This is great for kids, or people with smaller hands. It also represents the fast picking of some guitarist when they do a solo.
Multiplayer is fun. I have done this on the demo system at a local Best Buy. One person can control the guitar, drums, and voice out of the special edition box. If you have Guitar Hero II or III for the 360, or Guitar Hero III for the ps3 and get the special edition box, you can even add a fourth person as a bassist.
Practice. You must practice Christopher-San. Sorry, had a Mr. Miagi moment there.. But practicing the songs help. you can attempt the songs on higher settings just to see what you could do… without the crushing defeat if you fail out of a song.
