It seems as though everyone with a blog has posted their opinions regarding the iPhone prototype. Was it lost? Was it really “stolen?” Is Gizmodo liable for not turning it in? Is the poor kid that found the gadget the one who should be in trouble? Heck, should anyone even BE in trouble? After all, accidents happen. People lose things all the time. Others find them.

This is likely part of the reason why Apple ignores blog posts for the most part. Everyone has an opinion, and not all of those opinions match what Jobs and company are thinking. Also, the blogosphere doesn’t necessarily reach all of Apple’s intended audience. However, Daily Show host Jon Stewart does happen to reach them, and Apple should be mighty worried about now.

During his show last night, Stewart went on a rampage about the entire iPhone prototype situation. He lambasts Apple for sending out the police, and for their overall reactions to this entire “case.” As Jason Kincaid said over on TechCrunch:

Stewart’s report glosses over some important points in the case and gets a few details wrong. But ultimately that doesn’t really matter — Stewart’s audience probably doesn’t care if there’s a chance a crime was committed here. To them, a guy found a phone in the bar, photos of it were posted on the Internet, and Apple responded by siccing the authorities on them.

While all of us in the tech world have a strong opinion on one side of this proverbial coin or the other, the general population of the world sees the entire debacle just as Jason described. Apple looks like the bad guy in that scenario, and people aren’t happy about it. Most people don’t really give a fig who we think is “right” or “wrong” during all of this. They see that we have a case of “Finders Keepers – Losers Weepers,” and that Apple is acting like a big baby as a result.

iPad Wallpaper Tricks

Everywhere I look there are write-ups, reviews and reports about the iPad. I know – I’m guilty of writing about the device, as well. Let’s face it: this is hot news! However, I do know that there are many people out there who don’t want an iPad, and don’t plan to ever buy one. I’m willing to bet that right about now they’d love to play a dirty little trick on their iPad-owning friends.

Gizmodo has posted several different wallpaper tricks you can play on your friends. A few of them really are cruel, and will likely send the device owner into a frenzy (complete with foam coming out of their mouth).

Notice anything strange going on here? It may take your friend a few minutes to realize they can suddenly open Hulu and use Flash on their iPad. Let’s not forget they also apparently are now on the Verizon network.

You could always play around with the iPad to install this fun wallpaper. As soon as it’s live on the screen, clear your throat and say a loud “OOPS! My bad.” Hand them back the device and watch as they transform into something that looks as though it should be in the next Freddie movie.

You can have a lot of fun at their expense. They might even forgive you for it and find it humorous after a few moments. Just uh… don’t put any of these on my iPad, mkay?

Don’t Believe Everything You Read

I had to chuckle a little while ago when someone in our live chat room stated that Google’s new operating system will be 100% invulnerable to malware attacks. That’s an awful hefty claim for Google to make, if they in fact did. The truth is that nothing is impossible in this day and age of malware. Criminals, hackers and malware writers will indeed figure out a way to get inside of whatever Google comes up with. Sadly, it’s par for the course. It’s rumors like these that make people who don’t know any better think that they don’t need any type of security software.

I hate rumors and speculation. I’m a hard facts type of guy. Show me proof, or don’t tell me at all. I know, not everyone is like that. And that’s ok, I suppose. However, it’s imperative that you do your research, and find out the truth of the matter in anything you want to believe. It’s ok to have “faith”, yes. It’s not ok to blindly ASSume something is right and correct and real. Sometimes, that can get you in to trouble.

One of the reasons I love our community so much is that as Geeks, we take the time to back up what we say with facts and resources. Have you taken the time to read what it is they are trying to say?

Jason Calacanis spent billions of dollars on socially engineering a social bookmarking experiment, only to discover that his paid socialites were bookmarking a single page on Gizmodo.com over and over again.

The failure of this project really took its toll on Calacanis. Jason started showing up for work in full ringleader regalia, and AOL executives started to become a bit concerned. When paying for links didn’t work, he started paying people NOT to link – and that effort, too, failed miserably.

It was then that Calacanis turned his attention to the anti-social demographic. Enlisting help from the Asociation of Shy Superbloggers – or ASS for short – Weblogs Inc. was able to launch The Stalker Blog, The Serial Killer Blog, and Whoretexx (a blog for psychotic hookers).
