Have you ever drawn one of those little flip books? I tried to show off my ‘banana in a sand storm’ creation, but I think it may have been lost on some of you. Thankfully, there’s a great new App available for my iPhone to help me create some really cool flip things! The FlickBook is available now in the App Store on iTunes for only about $5.00.

Flickbook lets you create classic-style animations on your iPhone or iPod touch with a basic, no-frills simple UI. There’s a large area of white space for sketching, which is done by drawing a finger across the screen. Create the next image in your sequence by touching an arrow in the bottom right-hand corner.

The aim of Flickbook is simplicity. The goal, the devs tell us, is for a user to be able to pick up the iPhone and go. To begin, you simply point and draw—a line follows your finger as you drag it across the screen. To create a new page, you simply touch the + sign that appears underneath the curled page once you begin drawing. After making a new page, the drawing on the last page is shown as an onion skin so the user can easily trace or judge where to make the next image in order to simulate movement. You can do this over and over again with no performance hit; the duo of programmers has used a different means of rendering the animations that involves very little memory footprint.

There are three methods of playback: you can single-click the play button, which will lead to a steady playback of 12fps; double-click the play button, which will lock the movie in a loop; or you can scrub through the animations manually by dragging the slider through at the desired speed.

It may not be perfect, but it is a lot of fun. Hopefully it will be updated in the near future to give even more drawing and saving options. Why not check it out?
