It’s been a while since I last talked to you about Dropbox. It’s a service which gives you 2GB of free storage space in the cloud. You can then purchase up to 100GB of space if you wish to. The best part of Dropbox is being able to share your space with as many others as you choose. Invite people to download or add files, and even help organize them into separate folders. Don’t worry – if you accidentally delete something, Dropbox even lets you undo your oopsie from the interface!

Another cool feature of the service is the fact that it doesn’t matter which operating system you choose to use. Dropbox will sync between Windows, OS X and Linux with ease. Heck, each person using your Dropbox can be on different operating systems, and it doesn’t matter. It will work seamlessly for everyone.

Dropbox can be accessed from your iPhone, Android device or iPad. It’s secure, it’s private and it backs up your files online instantly (and automagically!). This isn’t why I wanted to talk to you today, though. I actually wanted to highlight AirDropper.

AirDropper will let you have people send you files by way of Dropbox, even if they don’t have an account. Connect AirDropper to your Dropbox account and send a file request to someone. They will upload the file, and it appears in your Dropbox folder quickly. Many of the file upload and sharing services out there right now are complete crap. This is the perfect solution!

Habilis is another service that makes Dropbox even more worthwhile for you. Once you sign up for a GetHabilis email address, anyone can send files to that email address and have it show up in your Dropbox account.

Even though you only receive 2GB of storage space free on Dropbox, your storage space can be increased to 10GB when you refer enough people to the service. Check them all out, and let them make your life easier – for free!

We uploaded a screencast from Billy not long ago. He received excellent reviews, so I was only too happy to look at his newest creation. This one will teach you what exactly Dropbox is, what it’s for, and why you should be using it! I use it on a daily basis, myself, and love it! Don’t forget that you could have your screencast featured on my channels. Get to work, and email me your best!

Dropbox is the easiest way to store, sync, and, share files online. There’s no complicated interface to learn. Head over to Dropbox and download it to your computer. Then, of course, create a new account if you don’t already have one.

When you are finished installing, you’ll notice a couple of folders already there. There will be a public folder, as well as a photos folder. If you want someone to download a file, drag and drop it into your public folder. It will let you know when it’s finished uploading. Right click it, and copy the public link. Paste that into an Internet browser, and the download box will open automagically!

Dropbox is a free and easy way to transfer files. There are pricing options for larger Dropbox storage space should you need it. I have a large account, as this is how I transfer video files to Kat so that she can get them onto all of my channels for me. I have never had issues with it myself, and recommend the service to all of you.

There’s something to be said for having network attached storage. If you haven’t invested in any hardware yet, you might consider HP’s new offering. It’s a bit more than the average NAS device. Not only was HP at Macworld showing off their Media Smart Server, they also received a trophy for “Best in Show”!!

Maximize the power and potential of your home network with the HP EX475 MediaSmart Server, which enables you to conveniently centralize your files and access them from multiple PCs in your home. Based on AMD Live processing power, the MediaSmart Server enables you to back up your home’s PCs as well as share and enjoy digital music, home videos and photos from any computer or entertainment system on a home network. The server also has the expandability to grow with your family’s changing needs.

This is so far beyond a regular old NAS drive. The HP Media Smart Server runs what is called Windows Home Server operating system. HP introduced the first generation about fifteen months ago, and feedback was amazing! Install the client software on your PC. Once it’s installed on the PC, you can connect to your Mac as well.

You’ll get a preferences pane that opens up, and all of your computers will connect to it. Time Machine on the Mac will even back up to the Media Server. Simply specify how much space on the HP you want to use, and schedule your backup. It couldn’t be simpler to keep copies of all of your files for safe-keeping. The fact that you can use the HP Media Smart Server to do backups across all of your network is something that the folks at HP are very excited about.

They Media Server is expandable up to 9TB of storage!! That’s a lot of file storage, folks. Think about it… an average home user will likely never have that much stuff to back up. Imagine putting every file from every computer on your home network all in one place. If there’s ever a home emergency… grab that ONE machine and go! That type of peace of mind is well worth the cost.

My wife Ponzi has started to Scuba Dive recently. In a few weeks, she’ll be going to Baja CA and down into Mexico to swim with sharks. She’ll be shooting video, of course. With the MacBook Air, she won’t have enough space to store all her video. So what should she use for a portable hard drive? She likes things that are small and she can easily carry anywhere with her. I told her that the highest amount of space she’ll get and stay portable would be about 320GB. She said that no, she wanted a TB of space. I asked her if she wanted more space for storage, or more in the physical size of the unit. She wanted a compromise somehow, so I went researching. I found the Iomega 1TB drive, and even secured a coupon for it.

Great capacity with style to match! The Iomega eGo Desktop Hard Drive USB 2.0 provides a simple and stylish solution for all your storage needs. Ideal for adding capacity, this plug and play drive is available in 1TB capacity in: Ruby Red. With EMC Retrospect HD (PC) included (via download) for easy file backup, it’s the easiest way to save photos, music, videos and more!

It is kind of heavy, and of course you have to carry the AC adapter and the USB cable with you. So, I wouldn’t really consider this portable so much. It’s more for a desktop, and it does hold up to a Terrabyte of data. I have a feeling that once Ponzi realizes this thing weighs nearly as much as the MacBook Air itself, she’ll want to send this back and buy a smaller drive.

It’s not very loud, and it seems to be built quite well as far as being sturdy. If you’re looking for affordable and excellent desktop storage, this would be it.

For years, I used a computer on my home network as a file server. I then used that file server to share files throughout my network. Some of you may be using Windows Home Server to serve up your files, but you may want to think about getting a NAS device. NAS stands for “Network-Attached Storage” devices. They are enclosures with hard drives inside them that could be accessible anywhere on the network. Then as NAS prices started to drop, they became a more feasible option for me. One NAS option for you is the Synology DS207.

DS207 is designed with Windows ADS authentication, USB printer sharing, dynamic website hosting, and data backup. The ultra-high-density file storing capability gives business users the freedom to store twice as much data. With the RAID 1 protection, DS207 can further prevent data loss from inevitable disaster.

When the hard drive on DS207 is full, you can expand more storage simply by attaching an external USB hard drive to the DS207.

DS207 is designed for Windows users and Mac users to share files seamlessly. Windows users can access DS207 via Samba and FTP, and Mac users via Samba, FTP, and AFP. Unicode support allows sharing files smoothly in different languages.

It’s designed to keep the unit cool, and running quietly. There is remote file management within a Web browser. You can even do Website hosting, with support for PhP and MySQL, which is kinda neat.

The front is quite interesting, with all the lights and a USB port. But, it’s not just any USB port. If I plug something into it, it will automatically suck all the data off the device, and copy it onto the NAS. On the back, you have the fan and a couple of USB 2.0 ports where you can plug in a printer or other device.

When I first heard about Synology through a friend, I couldn’t believe they were right here in Seattle. I couldn’t believe I had never heard of them. I did my research first. For me, it’s all about usability, working cross-platform, and Web-based features. So, I was excited to find that not only are they right here in my hometown, they also have a large variety of products to suit all of your needs.

You can never have enough storage space for files. What if I told you that you can get another 1GB of storage… absolutely free?

If you have a Windows Live id, you can sign up for the new SkyDrive from Microsoft. This Internet-based storage solution is free, and very easy to use. Simply sign up using your Windows Live id, and start uploading files.

Once your files are uploaded, you can access them securely using either Internet Explorer or Firefox. You can also choose to share your files with friends and associates. There are two levels of “outsider” access: reader and editor. The names are self explanatory. A reader is allowed access to read your files once you give them the login information. An editor has access to read and manipulate or change the files. They can be shared across the country… or across the world. When you sign in to Windows Live SkyDrive, you’re in charge. For each folder you create, you choose who has access to it. Add new folders, rename them, or change who has access at any time. So you can share some folders… but not others!
