Email Newsletter Software

This is the second time in the past week that someone has asked me (directly or indirectly) about mailing list software for email newsletters. I realize there are a wealth of email list services out there, but Steve Snes seems to be somewhat largely sold on PHPList:

Haven’t mailed you in a while. Thank you for the shout out you gave to a musical project of mine last year (band was called Nine Years Under). Unfortunately, because I’m picky about musicians I play with, that project fizzled.

I’ve been working on a website for a new project I’m involved with, which is up and running at http://www.superswamp.com . I’m pleased with the overall design and am now working towards adding some dB driven functions. One of these will be, of course, an email list where we can send out newsletters and gig announcements, etc….

Anyhow, I really would like the ability, when sending out emails, to filter my outgoing mails by radius of location. In other words, say I’m sending a mail to announce something in Myrtle Beach, SC. It doesn’t make sense to send a mail to Huey “The” Duck in Kalamazoo, MI. Though Huey’s a special person & a valued fan, he probably won’t care! Instead, I’d like the option of sending to a selectable radius of 29577 (the zip code in MB). I know Myspace has this feature with sending out “invites” for events (though it works pitifully, as does everything else on the site), so I know it’s a possibility. But I cannot seem to find any information. I’ve googled a few different combos of keywords to no avail.

Are you aware of any type of system by which I can achieve this? I’ll more than likely be using PHPList to manage the mailing list stuff, so I’m guessing the solution would have to be an exe which resides on my server?

For discussion lists, I’ve been using mailman – which is sufficient, but very painful to manage and/or migrate. I’ve also tried FeedBurner’s email list feature in conjunction with some of our more popular feeds, but its simplicity is sometimes frustrating. For power, I’ve gone with WhatCounts. Haven’t paid much attention to the world of email newsletters in a while… everybody’s been moving to the Web.
