<p>Erasing, unlike deletion, eliminates all traces of a file, so that you can&#8217;t recover the files by writing over the same section of the hard drive many times.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve ever stored sensitive information on your computer &#8211; passwords, credit card information, or checking account information &#8211; you&#8217;ll want to erase the hard drive, especially if you&#8217;re selling it to someone.</p>
<p>A great free utility to do this is called <a href="http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/">Eraser</a>:<br />
