Keep Yourself Safe From Online Disasters

In 2008, there was some published data about how many laptops were lost or stolen each week at U.S. airports. The number was staggering. The 2008 research put the number at over 10,000 laptops per week. With the increasing popularity of netbooks, as well as the wide use of laptops, the numbers now may exceed the 2008 findings. And that is just airport data.

When those figures are combined with home thefts, the numbers must be impressive — in a bad way. Not only is the hardware valuable, but the information on those machines could lead to even more problems. For example, most computers have personal information on them. This is especially true as people are doing their tax returns. If that information falls into the wrong hands, then there is a real concern for identity theft.

We encourage our readers to use security software. As much as the security firms try, they are usually one step behind the hackers. No security firm says that their software gives one hundred percent protection — they simply can’t. The Internet is too dynamic and things are happening too fast.

Because of disasters like a stolen/lost laptop or a hacker penetrating security, there should be a final layer of protection — and that is encryption. Encryption may seem like an extreme measure that will make it difficult for the user it’s meant to protect, but this is simply a myth. Encryption is not difficult, and it is not only for the geeky.

One simple, effective program that is recommended for encryption is SafeBit:

“SafeBit Disk Encryption is the perfect electronic vault you need for your privacy. It features military strength on-the-fly encryption, by creating virtual disk drives, where you can hide files and folders, keep them encrypted all them time, but still work with these files just like you work with normal files. SafeBit is the last line of defense if your current security system fails against viruses, trojans or hacker attacks.”

This is a very special offer for our readers. The SafeBit people are offering our readers a generous forty percent (40%) discount off their regular price. This is a remarkable saving on an award winning software program.

Use this link to get SafeBit at its discounted rate.

This offer expires on April 21st, 2010. SafeBit works on 32-bit versions of Windows 2K/NT/XP/Vista.

If your computer is lost or stolen, then the information is safe. Encryption theoretically can be broken, but it may take years of sophisticated effort. Most thieves will not bother, and the data likely would be wiped and the stolen machine sold. When you know that the information on the missing machine is safe, it makes the disaster of the missing laptop, netbook, or even desktop somewhat easier to take.

Here is just one last reminder for the people who will be traveling with their laptops. If you are using different Wi-Fi connections regularly or plugging in to unfamiliar Internet connections, there is the risk of keyloggers. For example, the keylogger would record your name and password when you enter a site like PayPal. That would be comparable to handing over the log-in data to your online account. SafeBit has a virtual keyboard, which will give protection from such keylogger programs and password stealing malware. The virtual keyboard feature alone is worth the generous price of this program.

Thanks to the SafeBit people for offering this program to our readers at this price point.

On July the 15th, I was innocently tooling down the highway, headed to a local event to hang out with some friends. Out of nowhere – CRASH! Someone driving a rental car behind me smashed into the back of my car, shoving me hard into the car in front of me. I was effectively the middle of a car sandwich.

Thankfully, no one was injured. Had I known I was about to be hit, I’d have probably tensed up and been hurt. However, I had no idea it was happening until it was over and done with.

Neither the car in the back nor the car in the front sustained much damaged. My poor little Vader, however, has several owies. It’s pretty crunched up, in the front AND the back. Needless to say, Vader now has to head into the shop and have just a tiny little bit of work done. Ok – so it’s a lot of work. The car was not drivable after it happened. I just am glad that I have insurance!

Some of you who have been following me over the past week or so have seen me get a bit upset at my iPhone 3G. Well, more to the point, the 2.0 operating system is what I’m mad at. The upgrade seemed like a good thing. However, I’m running into tons of trouble. I’ve had to completely restore it four times already, and am about to have to do it again. I’m completely baffled as to why this keeps happening. I’m adding my Apps through iTunes like you’re supposed to. I’m not doing anything weird with my iPhone. I’m simply trying to use it as intended.

The only thing I can assume it would be is that iPhone 2.0 is just not mature yet, much like Microsoft Vista when it was first released. What 2.0 alleges that it brings to the table is support for third-party Apps. However, and I’ve experienced this three times already, it just isn’t happening. I’m not talking about a small little reboot. I’m talking I have to completely wipe it out and restore everything from scratch. It’s getting very annoying, to say the least. I have to re-add the Web icons (which aren’t saved), adding account usernames and passwords, etc.

Inevitably, something still keeps going wrong. Just when I think it’s a particular App that is causing the problem, I find out it is something else. I’ve tried and tried to narrow it down, to no avail. I have no trouble using Native Apps, by the way. I can go into Notes… although my notes weren’t saved. The moment I try to go into any third party App it will try to launch for a few seconds… and then crash. Every. Single. Third-Party. App. Crashes.

I get no error message. I get no joy. There’s no rhyme or reason to why this is happening. After a full restore, it will work for a little while, and then it starts happening again. So, I’m just resolved to not using any third-party Apps on the iPhone.

I don’t know if any of you know what’s going on, or if you know someone at Apple that can help you. Yes, I know this is an “early-adopter” thing. I can’t help it though. I’m addicted to gadgetry. What iPhone 2.0 COULD be is amazing. What it is now, is just not.

I have been loving Mac OS X Leopard since I began using it. I know a lot of people were upset when I switched to Mac. I don’t know what it is, but the Mac just gives you an incredible feeling of warmth. You bond emotionally with my machine! It just works so wonderfully. I’ve never had issues, not like I did with Windows. BSODs are a thing of the…

WTH is that? COME ON you can’t be serious!?!?!
