I’m always on the prowl for interesting websites and services that can help us, whether you’re a power user or a novice. I recently found a website that I am excited to pass on to all of you.

Tinypaste is a place where you can paste text or code to save and share with another person, or multiple people. It’s so easy to use, that it needs no explanation on the website! Simply paste in your text, and click the “Submit” button. It will take all that text and give you a small URL which will link directly back to what you pasted in.

There is also a Firefox Extension available for Tinypaste. The extension allows you to right click on any text you have selected, click “Tinypaste selected text”, and presto! You have the Tinypaste URL. You never have to leave the page you are on.

Having trouble getting your copier/scanner to work right? Need to troubleshoot? Here are some tips sent in by a community member that will help you.

If the copier does not copy, print or scan turn it off and back on. They sometimes need to reboot just like a computer. They are more like your desktop PC then you know. Many run Windows Xp or Linux in their print controllers and others use Linux for the main operating system of the copier.
If you pull out a jam and end up with less then a full sheet of paper in your hand, the copier is still jammed. Try to find the rest of the sheet. When you tear out a piece of paper, any fragments still in there will find a nice dark place to jam and will snag the next copy you make. Many times what would have been a simple jam clearing exercise will become a wait for a service technician to fix the machine.
If the copies are light and the copier is not displaying a toner low message, don’t add toner. Something else is wrong. All copiers have sensors that detect low and empty toner conditions. Many problems start out as light copies. Continuing to run the machine may actually cause additional damage and expense. Call for service.
All toner is not the same stuff. If you run out of toner, don’t add any that’s intended for a different model copier. You will cause a major problem adding the wrong kind. Think of it like getting a blood transfusion with the wrong blood type.
If you get a dark line on your copies when feeding though the document feeder, but not when you copy from the platen glass check for Wite-out, ink or other foreign matter on the narrow piece of glass that is next to the big platen glass. Most modern copiers use document feeders that roll the originals over this narrow glass (often referred to as the “slit glass”). When something sticks to this glass it causes dark lines on copies.
BonusTip!! The copier technician wants your copier to operate correctly as much as you do. Many times problems are very intermittent. It helps the technician to know the details of the copy job that caused the problem. Stuff like: paper tray used, single sided or doubled sided copies, the size of your copy/print job, finishing options selected and if it was a copy quality problem, a sample of the copy with the problem.

Think of the virtual clipboard like a real clipboard. When you cut or copy some information from a document or spreadsheet, for instance, it is saved on the clipboard for you to paste somewhere else later.

Let’s say you want to put something from the beginning of a document into the end of your document instead. You’ll need to do the following:

Select the text you want to move. Place your mouse cursor just to the left of the text you want to select. Hold down your Shift key while dragging the mouse to the right, until all of your text is selected.
Cut the text from the document. With the text selected, right click on it and choose “Cut”. Alternately, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + X in Windows or Command + X on the Mac.
Paste the text where you want it moved to. Place your cursor in the spot where you want the cut text to begin. Right click your mouse and choose “Paste”. Again, you can use a keyboard shortcut instead. For Windows, it’s Ctrl + V, and for Mac it’s Command + V.

You have now moved your text! To copy a certain block of text to another place, you follow most of the same steps:

Select the text you want to copy.
Right click on the selected text, and choose “Copy”. You can also use another shortcut. For Windows, use Ctrl + C and for Mac it’s Ctrl + C.
Paste the text where you want it copied to.Place your cursor where you want the text, and right click. Choose “Paste” again, or use your keyboard shortcut.

Now you have cut, copied and pasted text! You can also view the contents of your Clipboard at any time, or clear it out. In Windows select Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then click Clipboard Viewer.

If you need to copy the full path for a file (or any object), press SHIFT before right-clicking it and you should see a “Copy as Path” option in the context menu. Could certainly prove useful in your day-to-day file operations, although I’d also recommend both on ShellToys and CopyURL for extended shell clipboard functionality. Why Windows (or OS X) doesn’t ship with the ability to hold more than one item on the clipboard is crazy. We have plenty of RAM these days. More Windows Vista tips to come…

There is one program I need but can’t find anything like it. I need a SysTray clipboard monitor. It doesn’t need to be a clipboard extender / archiver. All I want it to do is monitor the clipboard and report on the SysTray icon what and how much is in the clipboard. Whenever I copy to the clipboard I want to know whether what I copied is there because sometimes it isn’t. The icon would display T2k for 2kB of text or H43k for 43kB of html or B1.2m for 1.2MB of bit map or J67k for 67 kb of JPEG image, etc. I have searched, but can’t find anything like this.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tool like that? You might consider contacting clipboard software authors – like the people who make the free Yankee Clipper. Personally, I recommend and use Clipboard+ (a utility that comes bundled with ShellToys XP). That Windows still doesn’t come with a way to manage multiple items on a clipboard is beyond me.
