How to Take Control of Your Contacts

This is a guest post written by Matt Gamboa.

If you’ve been to a networking event or Japanese meeting, you’ll understand that the business card is a very important aspect in telling people who are and how to get in touch with you. You also would know then, that the 2 x 3.5 inch piece of fancy paper that you receive multiple times over, can take of a lot of space in your pocket!

Fortunately, Gist is working to build a service that will save the trees and your pocket space by storing contact information from your professional network in the cloud. By pulling all your contact data from different sources together, Gist’s services help you manage and organize who you know in a beautiful, informative way.

Contacts from your address books, social networks, and inboxes are combined and stored in your Gist account. Through the use of apps and plugins, your database can be accessed just about anywhere. Gist has been hard at work developing these plugins and already include:

Outlook

Lotus Notes

Gmail

Salesforce

iPhone

Android

Once you have your contacts built, additional services are then provided to keep you up to date with the latest happenings of your network. Twitter updates, blogs posts, Facebook news, and any other networks your contacts are connected to are all delivered to you when you log in. Making it simple to keep track of what that CTO had for lunch, or where that CEO you met yesterday is currently shopping. Gist wants to give you an open view of what all your contacts are up to and what news there might be about them.

As founder T.A. McCann says on his profile, “Gist brings your contacts into one place to give you the only full view of your network making it easy to find anyone, anytime.”

One of the most popular apps on both the iPhone and the Android has to be Bump. I see people everywhere bumping their phones together in order to get to know each other better. You can use Bump to exchange contact information, share photos, or even become friends on Facebook. As you can see from the demonstration we did in the video, it’s simple to use. Stop wasting your time manually typing someone’s name, phone number and email address into your address book. Just Bump them!

The app on your phone uses the phone’s sensors to literally “feel” the bump, and it sends that info up to the cloud. The algorithm on Bump’s website listens to the bumps from phones around the world and pairs up phones that felt the same bump. As soon as the two users confirm the bump (it only takes a few seconds for the app to ask you), the information is exchanged.

Two people who wish to Bump each other don’t have to be using the same type of device. An iPod Touch can Bump an Android, for instance. As of now, only a few phones have the sensors in them that Bump needs in order to “feel” the bumps you make. In the near future, though, all phones will include those same sensors. When that happens, the folks at Bump plan to have an app available for them all. Their goal is to see that none of us ever have to manually enter contact information again.

Be careful when you Bump! Only Bump with a partner who will be gentle to you. Your iPhone is not salsa-proof!

Special thanks to the folks at AMD for helping me to attend SXSW.

Soft Contact Lens Wearing Tips
By Morten Hansen

New wearers and even some experience wearers have questions about their soft contact lenses so here are some soft contact lens wearing tips.

One of the most common question by new wearers is ‘How will I know if my soft contact lens is inside out?” The difference is subtle but before putting the soft contact lens in your eye make sure it looks like a half ball not like a soup bowl or a u with flared out edges. You can do this by holding the lens up directly in front of your eye and then looking down on it. If it forms a half a ball or a proper U it’s the right way.

If your soft contact lens is tinted with the lens on your fingertip look down. You should see the color tint along the edge. Other lenses have a laser marking with the company name. If you can read it properly the lens is in the correct position.

Before you apply your contacts you need to wash your hands but don’t use scented or oily soap that can cling to your lens and cause eye irritation. To avoid mixing up which lens goes in which eye it helps to always put the same eye in first.

Before removing your soft contact lens from the case shake gently to loosen the lens in case it is stuck. Then slide the lens out of the case into your palm. Rinse thoroughly with the appropriate contact lens solution. Place the lens on the tip of your index finger. With the fingers and thumb on your hand pull up on your eyelid and down on your lower eyelid, then place the lens on the white of your eye. Roll your eye then blink.

When it is time to remove your contacts look upwards and sideway and pull on the lower eyelid. Use your finger to gently maneuver the lens on the white of your eye. Then gently pinch the lens together and lift f off your eye. Don’t worry it can take some time to master this technique. It’s a good idea to have your nails really short so you can’t damage your eye. Of course you should wash your hands before you begin the removal process.

Exposure to excess UV light can cause photokeratitis. Some lenses incorporate UV protection in their soft contact lens. The packaging should tell you whether your lenses have this protection.

UV blocking is not to replace your UV protection sunglasses. The two protections compliment each other nicely.

If you wear makeup you know eye makeup in the eye can burn and is very annoying. It’s even worse when you have your soft contact lens in. You will need to immediately flush the area. Put your lens in before you apply your makeup and always wash your hands so you don’t transfer contaminants.

Inserting your soft contact lens and removing them are the difficult part. Once you master that you’ll be set.

About The Author

Morten Hansen has been focused on the Contact Lens area for several years and is mainly writing about subjects, that makes it easier for people to understand the different issues about Contact Lenses.

From Eric’o'theque, Gnomedex Outlook Contacts from the Gnomedex OPML. It doesn’t work with Outlook 2000, though:

Here’s something interesting for the other attendees: Chris released the OPML of the folks registered for Gnomedex. Dave pointed to a directory listing web page created out of the OPML. Over the weekend and a few recent late nights, I ran a script to get the OPML into Outlook as contacts and then decided to put snapshots of the various speakers into the contact cards, along with throwing in categories for Gnomedex and Gnomedex-Speaker.

Then I gave the mouse a cookie.

I decided, hey, why not get to know all of your fellow attendees by visiting their given web page. And, hey, if they have a headshot, why not throw that into their contact info. Oh, and, hey, if they have a bio or such, why not throw that into their contact details.

This got a little carried away. So I’d like to share it, if I could: Outlook contacts for Gnomedex 06.
