The Open Source Community Project Named Gnomepal

The last few days have been a whirlwind of backchannel (and front-facing) activity surrounding my call-to-action. 95% of the feedback has been positive AND productive, with some of my favorite responses coming from people who had working code to donate – and a nod from Dries on one of Adam’s follow-up posts.

Five must-have Joomla plugins (and tips)

When I mentioned in my Picks that we deployed Joomla to drive this year’s Gnomedex site, a Gnomie responded enthusiastically. Jack Bremer operates a handful of Joomla-driven sites, including Prospect Burma and his own 3B Web Design. John and I have been hacking away at it for a while now, but he definitely knows more about the platform than I do – and John offered a handful of tips and suggestions, including his top five “must have” Joomla extensions. Server Problems

So, yeah… we’ve been fighting a few server burps over the past few days. I don’t even know where to begin – but I do know where we’re headed, and that’s up. Sean and Chris Brunner have reverse engineered an awful lot to get us to some level of stability, and there’s still much work yet to be done. I’m told that we need to locate a MySQL guru, too? We are adding a few more modifications to WPMU, but have stumbled into a better plan along the way – more on that soon. Essentially, I’m going to be starting my first Open Source project.
