href="http://chris.pirillo.com/why-does-apple-restrict-the-iphones-abilities/">Why Does Apple Restrict the iPhone’s Abilities? is a post from Chris Pirillo

I have a problem: I get NFR copies for many iPhone apps.

This, itself, isn’t an issue – but the iPhone can only display up to 144 apps at one time. This limitation is artificial, as I have an insane amount of free space on the device. I currently have 250 apps in my iTunes library (out of tens of thousands available storewide). Many of these great apps can no longer be synced because of this imposed limitation. Consequently, I’m not carefree with what I choose to install on the iPhone anymore.

The solution: Apple needs to enable some kind of Spotlight search for installed apps on the iPhone, showing (a) the most recently used and (b) the most used apps – on two separate sheets.

I know that some people are content with having ~10 apps on their iPhone, but that (to me) seems like such a waste of resources and potential. I’m addicted to iPhone apps, I admit it – especially the free ones. Why is Apple not letting me access the full potential of this platform?

So, I admit that I’m an extreme case. How many apps do you have on your iPhone? I asked my Twitter followers:

Why Does Apple Restrict the iPhone’s Abilities? is a post from Chris Pirillo

Ronni was a speaker at Gnomedex last year. She is one amazing lady, and a good friend. She has an excellent question, sent to me recently via email. Sadly, I don’t have the answer. However, I’m hoping one of you out there will know if there’s something like what she’s looking for.

Since you are my guru for all things technology or vaguely related, I’ve got a question for you:

I use a VoIP service for my home telephone. I have one base phone with two extensions so I don’t need to run the length of the apartment when someone calls. I also have a cell phone.

Cell reception is so good in my neighborhood, I don’t really need to be paying $300 a year for the VoIP service. But if I cancel it, I’m stuck with one cell phone and who knows where it might be when it rings. I have trouble remembering to stick it in my pocketbook when I leave the house, and I certainly wouldn’t remember to take it with to the bedroom at night or wherever else in the house I’m going to be for awhile. Plus, I don’t see the point of having two telephone numbers these days.

So here’s what I’m wondering:

Is there such a thing as an internal network for cell phones that combines with normal extension handsets? Maybe a box of some sort connected through the landline jacks that most homes have already installed? I can’t imagine that this doesn’t exist, and it would be particularly useful for women whose clothes don’t often have pockets like men’s clothing, so it’s not easy to keep a cell phone with you all the time.

Or maybe there’s another solution…

Perhaps you’ve addressed something like this in one of your videos that I’ve missed, or maybe you could do so if you haven’t.

I hope you and Ponzi are well,
RSS Feed

I am getting used to having dropped calls on the iPhone 3G. This thing drops calls like clockwork. It doesn’t seem like a tower problem. I can be sitting still, and lose a call. Even if the phone shows full signal, it still will drop. I’m hoping the upcoming firmware update will solve some of this. I’ve never had a mobile device with this many issues. What’s a Geek to do to boost reception? When I was given the opportunity to review the Cell Ranger, I could choose between the USB connection, or the kind that plugs into a cigarette lighter in a car. I decided to go with USB for a couple of reasons. For one, I’ve got USB ports everywhere. For another, I have an inverter for my car that will allow me to plug USB devices in while I’m in the car.

The Cell Ranger PORT is a USB powered cellular signal booster. By plugging the Cell Ranger PORT into a USB port you can boost your cell phone signal by up to 2-3 bars. We designed Cell Ranger to be compatible with every cellular network (except Nextel), cell phone, and data card. No matter which cellular service you use, voice or broadband data, you’ll see a significant boost in signal when you plug in the Cell Ranger. In most cases you’ll get 2-3 bars more signal within a 6 foot coverage radius. In our tests, using Cell Ranger with a broadband data card can result in anywhere from 30% to 200% faster download speeds. Cell Ranger is the first truly intelligent cell booster. By using a specially programmed microprocessor, Cell Ranger carefully monitors signal and adjusts to provide optimum signal. Unlike any previous booster, Cell Ranger actively analyzes the signals that your cell phone is sending and receiving. By comparing the signal strength to different towers, Cell Ranger self-tunes to the correct channels, and amplifies only those signals.

Gives 2-3 bars extra signal for any cell phone or 3G data card.

Prevents dropped calls and improves call quality.

Compatible with every carrier in Canada and the US.

Powered by a standard USB port.

No drivers – Cell Ranger only uses USB for power. Optional AC adapter/rechargable battery available..

You don’t want to set this near any kind of magnetic media, like a hard drive. You’d want to stick this on a metallic surface before plugging it in. It will allegedly boost your signal on both 800MGz and 1900MGz reception. I will be trying this out for awhile, and then I’ll let you know how well it works. This video was mostly an introduction to tell you how it works.

A quick test in my office was interesting, to say the least. I plugged it all in, and had trouble connecting to the network. When it wasn’t connected to my iPhone, I had four signal bars. When I plugged it in, I dropped down to two! Basically, either the iPhone sucks, or AT&T does. I’m not giving up on this though. It could just be my office, and all my gadgets interfering. I am going to test it while I’m out and about. I’ll let you know how I fare.

RSS Feed

What ringtone do you have on your mobile device right now? Did you download it from the Internet, or are you using one that came with your phone. It’s so much better to go online to get one for your phone… for free. We’ve done many of these types of videos in the past. Today, I have a new one to tell you about.

On Tonzr, you can gain free access to MILLIONS (6,826,506 and counting) of MP3 ringtones, or “realtones”. There are just three easy steps to getting your ringtone:

Search for an artist or song title.

Preview the ringtones by clicking the play button to the left of each result.

When you find the ringtone you want, click the title of the track and have it sent to your phone!

That’s all there is to it. There’s nothing to sign up for, and more importantly… nothing to pay for.

So far, we support any phone with internet and MP3 capabilities on the following networks: Sprint, Nextel, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Cellular South, and Cricket. We’ll be adding Helio and hopefully many others soon.

Tonzr is completely, entirely, honestly free. Free, free, free, free. There is absolutely no hidden fees or subscriptions so you won’t have any surprises when your phone bill comes. Seriously, it’s totally free.

I can’t think of an easier (and cheaper!) way to get a great ringtone for your phone.

<li

<li

This saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, but if you can reach someone who has the other ‘remote’ for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). href="http://chris.pirillo.com">Chris Pirillo

There’s at least one Scott who has subscribed to my videos on YouTube (which is quickly supplanting any numbers I could ever hope to drive through iTunes)…

Now, not to waste your time, but i had a thought watching the following video and figured i would write in for whatever the reason is that my subconscious has deemed important.

One of the tech terms in question is a cell phone, and it was said that they do not use “cellular technology”.. now, i may just be misinformed, but i believe they do. cellular technology, being that the whole network is based on a complex grid of cell towers, creating “cells of service within rang of the towers.. as you move from one cell to another (dependent on the number of towers around you), your connection to the network is automatically transferred over to the next tower that controls that particular cell you are in.

I think whoever sent in that bit of a rant has analog/digital mixed up somehow with cellular/satellite networking.. even though most cell phone data is transmitted via digital encoding nowdays, its still done on radio frequency with cell towers (except of course for satellite phones.)

First, anybody’s email does not waste my time (unless you’re a spammer). Second, I believe your clarification is spot-on.
Chris Pirillo

Apple’s iPhone:

This is one of the coolest pieces of technology to come out in a while… it’s like having a mini-laptop in your hands. The ultimate media device. The catch? Cingular has the rights at this point in time (they have the worst wireless phone service). If Apple had any brains, they would get this product in the home of every American family. After 6 months of exclusive rights to Cingular, they should release an iPhone on Verizon, US Cellular, every wireless provider.

If Verizon got this phone, I would find a way to buy it… takes the place of a phone, iPod, portable DVD player, Internet and email station. Oh, let’s not forget the 2 megapixel camera built-in.

What’s next? They are going to have a phone that does all of this – but then you can project an image on a wall and hook up a small keyboard and mouse and use it as a laptop, run Photoshop and Illustrator, or catch up on your spreadsheet work while in a airport.

My brother Adam isn’t a geek – and he’s never written to me about any other device (from Apple or any other manufacturer). It’s not even out yet and I already hate the iPhone… largely because someone else didn’t make it four years ago. Seriously. Apple gets the consumer in ways that no other company ever will. It makes my new Smartphone seem so… ancient.<ul
