Canon Printer Software Problems

A fellow geek purchased a Canon printer recently and, much to his dismay, discovered that it was impossible to operate without first installing the required software. This is one of the reasons I’ve been extremely gunshy about recommending Canon’s consumer products as of late (I’ve about had it with their PowerShot digital camera series, too). He wondered if I had the same problem with a specific HP printer previously reviewed…

So I just stumbled on your review of the HP Photosmart C6380. It’s probably kind of old by now, but I have a question about the required software and drivers, and I think you might be the only reviewer out there who would be interested in listening.

Have you been able to install the C6380 without using the provided software CD? I recently got a Canon PIXMA MP620 which seems to be pretty much the same printer on paper (and I have to agree with you, wireless scanning is something I’ve waited way too long to get). But I was disappointed to find that I had to install a ton of software just to print. Scanning, I can understand the need for some software (although I hope there comes a time when it’s unnecessary), but printing should work right away. I used to have an HP Photosmart 2610 and all I had to do to add the printer to my system was type in the ip address in the “ipp” field. In fact, now that I think about it, I believe Bonjour found it even before I had the chance to think about typing it in.

A network printer is a great thing to have around, since anyone can use it anywhere in my apartment, even neighbors down the hall who need to print out an e-ticket quickly before going to the airport or train station, or a teammate who comes over to work on a project one afternoon and wants to print out a diagram or a proposal so we can draw on it and discuss it together. But if they have to install a bunch of software just to print one thing, it kind of negates that ease of use. Canon, unfortunately, only supports their proprietary “bjnp” protocol, which means there’s basically no way to use the printer without installing their software. Getting it to work on linux took me two hours of googling, downloading, configuring, rebooting, and trial and error. If the C6380 can at least print without installing a bunch of junk, I would immediately box this thing up and pay the difference to swap it for the HP. Have your tried to use it without the provided software, or do you know if it supports ipp or something similarly universal?

Thanks for your time, and for the great video reviews!

I could certainly use the printer outright – and yes, it was quite available on the network. Of course, it was good to have the software installed – but I didn’t feel I needed to in order to access basic printing functions. I’ll actually be doing a future comparison between that HP printer and a similar Kodak model (to test ink cost theories).

I’ve been using a Canon GL2 connected to a Mac Mini to broadcast my live stream. It’s been tapped out at about 23 frames per second. Of course, it taps out even more because of all the extra elements I bring into it. I wasn’t looking to use a different camera. However, I’m using one now. The Canon Vixia HV30 was an excellent deal, so I had to give it a try.

The VIXIA HV30 is the HD camcorder to go along with everything else in your HD world. It captures true 1080 High Definition resolution video in 16:9 format, using MiniDV cassette tapes. High Definition and widescreen are the future. Be sure you invest in that future with Canon’s VIXIA HV30.

The VIXIA HV30 comes with an outstanding High Definition video lens – a 10x HD Genuine Canon Optical zoom. It’s the lens you need to record long shots of your child on the soccer field, wide shots of beautiful landscapes, and everything in-between.

Since it is critical to achieve very sharp focus when shooting in High Definition, the VIXIA HV30 camcorder features Canon’s revolutionary Instant AF focusing system. It offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy. This system achieves focus instantaneously, reducing focus “hunting.” With Instant AF, it’s possible to get fast, accurate focusing, even when following a moving subject.

The reason I went with this camera, is because it connects via FireWire. This allows me to use it as a webcam. I’m using a wide-angle lens. This way, I’m able to bring not only myself into the video, but also more of my surroundings.

This camera is excellent. The video quality is simply amazing, and does more than what I even need. People are swearing up and down that they can tell the new setup is worse… or better. However, I think it’s much better now. I tweak the settings and lighting quite a lot, so stay tuned to see what happens.

What digital camera are you using, and how long have you had it? I’m curious, because I just bought a new digital camera. I played with it pretty much all day when I brought it home. My new one is a Canon PowerShot SD880IS.

It’s so easy to capture the magic of every moment when SD880 IS Digital ELPH comes along for the ride. There’s a terrific sense of creative options for your photographic sense with a wide range of shooting modes and a wide-angle 28mm lens–all because your camera sees the world without limits. Of course, it’s a stylish point of view from a camera that merges up-to-the-moment performance with the art of impeccable design.

With the PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH camera’s 10.0 megapixels of imaging power, you’ve got a passport to unsurpassed image quality and versatility. Go ahead, enlarge pictures bigger than ever before without worrying about the image quality. And look forward to much more creative flexibility when you’re cropping and printing. The SD880 IS Digital ELPH may be ultra-slim and sculpture-sleek, but its focus is on the power of visual impact.

When it’s time to take a closer look, the PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH features a 4x Optical Zoom and advanced Optical Image Stabilizer, greatly minimizing camera shake and maximizing the brilliance of every detail. And Canon’s precision 28mm wide-angle lens lets you capture more in every frame, so everyone fits in a family gathering shot. The PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH gives you a large 3.0-inch LCD screen for excellent control when framing your shots. Canon’s PureColor LCD II offers spectacular color, resolution and contrast even when viewed at an angle. The screen is highly durable and easy to see in any light with a scratch-resistant, antireflective coating. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light–a perfect feature for gathering friends and family around to see your images.

Prior to using this, I used a Canon PowerShot SD700IS. That’s a good camera. It stays in my car, because inevitably I’ll be out and about and need to shoot a picture or video. I’ve been watching digital photography news, and found that Canon just released these. I can’t say this is an awesome camera, but it is very good. It has its pros and cons, as any product does.

My pros include the on-camera software, first and foremost. I often dislike the software that comes with any gadget like this, but I love this one. It’s easy to use, and does what I need. It’s solid, and well put together. It has a mini-USB connector, which I love. There’s the ability to shoot video, of course. It’s very fast. You click the power button, and it’s just ready to go. There are a ton of features on this camera, which absolutely rocks.

Another very VERY cool thing is the new “Face Self-Timer”. You set the timer, and aim. It will not take a photo until it detects a face! Also, it takes three photos in rapid succession, so you can choose the best one. Think about it, you’re on vacation, and want a picture of yourself with something in the background. This makes it SO much easier to get that great shot.

In theory, most everything is good with this camera. The thing I don’t like about it is that it seems to be “over .JPGd”. Yes, I’ve set it super-fine with max resolution. But, unfortunately, I get some artifacting, such as something had been softened in software. I believe Canon may have done this to soften the noise that may have been in a picture. It comes out too smooth though. It’s a small frustration, though.

Overall, this is a very good camera. You can get good images, despite the amount of light in a room. It will pass many tests in terms of image quality for most people. I’d definitely recommend it.

Back in the seventh grade, I won a prize of being able to take a few classes at the local Arts center. Back then, we didn’t have Digital Cameras. We learned with an actual film (SLR) camera. I fell in love with taking pictures that day, and that is one love that has never waned.

I upgraded our family to the new Canon Rebel XTi. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi offers an unbeatable combination of performance, ease-of-use and value. It has a newly designed 10.1 MP Canon CMOS sensor plus a host of new features including a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, the exclusive EOS Integrated Cleaning System featuring a Self Cleaning Sensor and Canon’s Picture Style technology, all in a lightweight, ergonomic body. The Digital Rebel XTi is proof positive that Canon continues to lead the way with their phenomenal digital SLRs.

Canon’s large-area CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. This APS-C size sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. With an effective pixel resolution of 3,904 x 2,598, the EOS Digital Rebel XTi offers superb detail and clarity, even in large prints, and generates finished files that open at approximately 30MB in your image-editing software. On Canon’s CMOS sensor, each pixel is captured with fine detail to create images of tremendous depth and resolution, ensuring enough information for even poster-sized prints.

The EOS Digital Rebel XTi is the product of Canon’s extensive in-house development: The DIGIC II Image Processor was designed specifically for Canon digital SLR cameras and enhances every aspect of image capture. Information captured by the CMOS sensor is processed and assembled into images of exceptional quality. With the DIGIC II Image Processor on board, photographers can expect natural color reproduction, precise white balance in any number of lighting situations and unparalleled clarity. The DIGIC II Image Processor employs sophisticated signal processing algorithms and works at greater speeds, all while consuming less energy.

Color or black and white… it doesn’t matter. I just love photography. This thing takes amazing photos with unqualified outcome. Ponzi and I are going to take some photography classes together. However, I’ve learned a lot over the years. If you’re taking pictures of people, keep in mind the “rule of thirds”. People tend to take pictures of people and things from a “centered” position. However, you can set better harmony in the picture by having your subject just a tiny bit off-center. It is just a dramatic change. It’s not “palpable”, it’s just there and very noticeable.

All in all, I’m ridiculously happy with this camera. Once again… Canon FTW.

I am a fan of the Canon Digital Cameras, but not such a fan of their software. Whappo sent me an email to let me know about an open-source program called CHDK, which can be used to update the software for your Digital Camera.

CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. CHDK gets loaded into your camera’s memory upon bootup (either manually or automatically). It provides additional functionality beyond that currently provided by the native camera firmware. It resides completely on the memory card, so it cannot harm your actual camera.

Here is just a sampling of the things you’ll be able to do with your Canon camera after you begin using CHDK:

Save images in RAW format

Ability to run “Scripts” to automate the camera

Live histogram

Zebra mode (blinking highlights and shadows to show over/under exposed areas)

An “always on” full range Battery indicator

Ability to turn off automatic dark-frame subtraction

a higher compression movie mode

a depth-of-field (DOF)-calculator

File browser

Text reader

Calendar

Some fun tools and games

Wow! Imagine, being able to do this much with your camera, without even having to pay for extra upgrades? This is why I love open-source, folks!

Canon PowerShot TX1

I’ve already posted a small review of my new digital camera – recorded last night, hours after it arrived on my doorstep. It’s definitely not perfect, but I’m learning to appreciate its quirks as much as its features. The TX1 is small enough to fit into my pocket, has a swivel screen for angle flexibility, and produces HD video results that are astounding (all things considered).

Even Ponzi couldn’t believe the quality of a short-form video when I played it back on one of my 30″ monitors. I shot a few seconds of test footage minutes after rolling out of bed, and you could see darn near every imperfection in my face (including bed lines). The world simply isn’t ready for this level of detail.

In short, I’m officially putting my Canon PowerShot SD700 IS and Canon PowerShot S2 IS digital cameras on the market. I’ll have to do some research on eBay for fair rates, but consider this announcement an initiation of a loosely-organized silent auction. Want to see a (and hear) a bit more about these PowerShots?

Canon PowerShot SD800 IS

I became a Canon PowerShot fan a few years ago – having fallen in love with the G2 and its feature set / form factor. My first pocket camera (ever) was an SD550, though I sold it and moved to the SD700 IS when it became available. I use the SD700 IS way more than I do my S2 IS – though I’m getting ready to sell both of ‘em. Why? The Canon PowerShot SD800 IS is coming:

The PowerShot SD800 IS features a 7.1-million-pixel CCD sensor. This high-resolution imager ensures every picture will have excellent detail, even when printed large, or cropped.

Brand new lens design integrates a wide angle zoom (28-105mm equivalent) and image stabilization. This 3.8x wide zoom lens was designed with fewer yet “smarter” optics (dual sided aspherics and UA) to achieve a compact size with wide angle and IS while maintaining impressive image quality. The SD800 IS is the first Digital Elph to feature both of these exciting lens technologies.

Takes the performance and speed of DIGIC II to even higher levels of processing power including new face detection function, up to 1600 speed ISO, high-ISO noise reduction, lower power consumption, increased speed for SD media cards, and higher resolution image processing for enhanced LCD viewing.

It’s an incremental upgrade from the SD700 IS, which is still an amazing camera. Anybody want it or my S2 IS? :)
