During a recent Bluetooth SIG event in Seattle, I learned how easy it is to keep track of your biking habits using Bluetooth technology. The demo bicycle wheel was spinning at about five miles per hour, even though it wasn’t really going anywhere. It was being measured by the little piece of plastic attached to the spokes, which is about the size of a thumb drive. The Velo Computer by Sound of Motion measures wheel rotation with a 1-degree precision.

So why is one degree important? What you can do with that information is important. You can calculate your acceleration, torque and watts. People who are training for biking marathons rely on information such as this to help them. “This unique sensing technology is at least 360 times more accurate than traditional sensors. It accurately measures distance, cadence, spot speed and acceleration within 1 second comparing up to 7 seconds delay in traditional cycling computers.”

When you finish your ride, you can post your information to the site. It will publish to Google Maps and Twitter for you so that you can share your ride with everyone. Sadly, the device won’t be available until later this summer. If you are a bike enthusiast, you’ll want to keep your eyes open for its launch.

During a recent Bluetooth SIG event, I was able to witness a proof-of-concept technology which shows the power of Bluetooth. As you can see, a photo was taken of Blair and then sent instantly to her phone via a Bluetooth connection. A Bluetooth peer-to-peer link can connect you with others in ways you have yet to even dream of.

Instead of using a large wireless network such as Bump uses, this application uses the Bluetooth high-speed connection. When looking for a Bluetooth device, you want to look at the profiles that will be enabled. There’s even an application on their website to help guide you before your purchase. You can look up nearly any Bluetooth device on the market and quickly find out what that particular device will pair with.

Michael said that they had just announced their Bluetooth 4.0 specification which they’re super excited about. That will enable very small sensor-type devices. It should open up the health and fitness market and even the medical market. You should see an explosion of Bluetooth devices built on this specification. Hopefully, by the end of 2010 you’ll see some initial products.

As it evolves, they’re looking for more ways to drive power consumption down. That is improved with ever iteration. They’re even looking at using button-type batteries.

Mike and Blair spend their time guiding and promoting the technology itself to the general consumer so that you know what it’s capable of doing.

When I asked Blair why she invited me to the SIG event, she jokingly stated that she couldn’t wait for me to stick a camera in her face and make her uncomfortable. She’s a PR person though, so she’s used to these types of things. Blair – sorry if I really did make you uncomfy! You did a terrific job, for sure.

There are tons of games out there for mobile devices. However, they aren’t always easy to play without the benefit of a controller. Zeemote has come up with a game controller for your phone and other mobile devices that connects via Bluetooth technology.

During a recent Bluetooth SIG event, I learned about a better way to game on my mobile devices. Theoretically, Zeemote will work on any device which is Bluetooth-enabled and the serial port profile. The device needs to have an application that has been made Zeemote ready. The company provides an SDK to the top fifteen game developers.

Their controllers have an analog joystick and four programmable buttons. They allow for a console-like gaming experience right on your phone. You never have to take your eyes off the screen to check that your fingers are in the right position on the phone. They’re available from BestBuy right now for around $40.00.

Are you a mobile gamer? I can’t get over how popular this type of game-playing is becoming. Mobile gaming is a multi-million dollar business these days, and everyone from newcomers to huge corporations are owning a piece of the pie. Thinking back to when I was young and thinking the original Atari was the coolest invention ever (it WAS at the time!!), it’s so incredibly cool to see just how far we’ve come.

Think about it: back in those days, “cell phones” were owned mostly by the very rich and were these huge clunky devices. Can you even think of what it would have been like to play a game with one of those? There were no screens, really, so I’m not sure how you’d even pull it off. Then again, I doubt that back during my teen years you’d have convinced me we’d see something on the market like a Wii.

If I want to listen to audio on my iPhone, it’s not usually a great experience. It’s not practical to walk around with my hand cupped to my ear. Unless external speakers are Bluetooth-enabled, it’s a pain in the proverbial rear to hook them up and tether it. I have to thank the folks at Creative for sending along the ZiiSound D5 Bluetooth Wireless Multimedia Speaker System for me to review.

I found out about this at the recent Bluetooth Sig event. I didn’t even realize there was such a thing that would look nice and work well. I can connect any Bluetooth device capable of transmitting audio to this setup. It doesn’t “only” work with my Apple portable devices.

The speaker system is touch-enabled. I can control the volume in two different places… and it has seriously rich sound. I don’t sound quite so whiny when my voice comes out through these speakers. The bass sounds excellent, which is surprising with a set of speakers such as these.

This is the reason I like to get out of the house every once in awhile. I tend to find out about some very cool new pieces of technology when I venture out to attend functions and conferences. What new things have you discovered recently?

Creative Zii D5 Bluetooth Wireless Sound Speaker Review

Air hockey has long been one of those games that everyone seems to enjoy playing. Starting tomorrow, you’re going to be able to play right on your iPad or iPhone. The full app created by Acceleroto will cost only 99 cents, with a free “Gold” version available, as well.

I know the younger generation is going to be all over this app. However, I’m willing to bet that many adults are going to grab this little gem for themselves. Go ahead – admit it. You love air hockey as much now as you did when you were younger. I know I do!

According to the official app description, you will have the ability to play against others via Bluetooth support. Alternatively, you can have two players using the same device. There doesn’t appear to be any type of way to play against a fake opponent, which is a shame.

When your iPad shows up on your doorstep tomorrow and you’re busy downloading apps for it, be sure to grab Air Hockey for your collection.

I meet up with many people on a regular basis, thanks to things like Tweetups and conferences. Not everyone is so lucky, though. Often, deep and lasting friendships are formed online, but the people involved never have a chance to meet face-to-face. Many people maintain that it’s easier to make a strong connection with someone online, since you don’t have the fears and anxieties associated with how you look, or how you come across in person. The BlueAnt Z9I headset is very cool. It’s not just Bluetooth, it charges by USB. It’s a proprietary connector, but it comes with the cable. The nice thing is that you can pair this one headset with up to five devices. You can use it anywhere you can well, pair it.

To begin with, the BlueAnt is diminutive at 1.61″ x .68″ x .44″ and weighs a mere .38 oz. Once you choose between the two ear buds, a small or large, and adjust the ear hook to your taste, you won’t even know it’s on. The ear bud rests in your ear, similar to in-ear headphones, but don’t go as far in. The ear hook holds it in place nicely. The ear buds screw in and out and are easy to remove. The ear hook is fully adjustable. You can push it in to make it tighter around your ear, and it also swivels so you can adjust the angle the headset rests at.

The Z9i features BlueAnt’s Digital Signal Processing solution – Voice Isolation Technology, which is supposed to provide outstanding noise suppression, echo cancellation and wind noise reduction. It also offers the Voice Isolation Max feature, which is like putting it into turbo noise isolation mode. By default the Standard Voice Isolation mode is working. If you find the need to kick it up a bit, you press the MFB button for 1 second while on a call, and you will hear a voice telling you that you have activated Voice Isolation Max.

Every review I have come across claims that this headset is almost better than listening directly to your phone or other device. The quality is just absolutely superior. It’s extremely comfortable, and fits really nicely. The features include:

Can a Bluetooth Headset Connect to More than One Device?

http://live.pirillo.com/ – I’ve been anxiously waiting for Microsoft to release their newest wireless keyboard and mouse. It’s been quite awhile since they’ve released a keyboard with USB ports in it, and believe me… you can never have too many of those.

The new Wireless Entertainment Desktop keyboard and mouse came today. I’ve been using this same mouse for about a year now, and I love it! I’ve been using the keyboard for a little under an hour now. It’s definitely slim and lightweight, and the backlit keys are awesome. But, there are some issues I’ve come across. I’m a touch typist, and this keyboard definitely wasn’t designed for touch typers.

• The Windows key has been moved. It now resides underneath the space bar. For someone like me who uses the Windows key for a variety of shortcuts, this spells disaster. I have to teach myself how to find these from fast touch again.
• There is a track (touch) pad on the right side of the keyboard. However, the button for “left click” is on the left side of the keyboard.
• With this new design, some of the keys… such as Function keys and ESC key… are no longer actually keys. They are these little nubs. Now, if you sit with your keyboard at a desk or workstation like I do, this is frustrating. You have to kind of feel your way around in order to find the right one. I’ve accidentally hit the ~ key many times without thinking in the past hour, thinking I was hitting the ESC key.

In my opinion, this keyboard was designed to be used by someone sitting away from their monitor, maybe even across a room. It wasn’t really designed to be used right at your desktop.

On a funny side note, take a close look at the logo on the mouse. The letter Ris missing from the word Microsoft. So, this mouse was made by a company named Mic osoft. Interesting…

Microsoft Desktop Keyboard Review

When the check engine light comes on in the car, there’s always that slight panic wondering whether your car is about to bite it while you’re driving. DATZOO offers a solution that might give you some peace of mind while simultaneously allowing you to quickly adjust a bogus problem in your system. Their new FixDat diagnostics tool plugs into the On-Board Diagnostics II port on your car (the same port used for smog checks in places like California and Washington). If the car generates a check engine event, FixDat reads the code and makes it available to software installed on any Bluetooth connected cell phone or laptop. You can read the code, decide whether it warrants a trip to the mechanic, and opt to reset the check engine light if you prefer to remain oblivious to your problem.
