Archive the Tweets That are Important to You

Tweets are archived for all of eternity in many different places. The problem is, there are millions and millions of them. How the heck are you ever going to find the ones that are actually important to you? Plexipixel and Microsoft’s MIX Online have teamed up together to bring you a whole new way of tracking the Twitter information that you want – when you want it. The Archivist may still be in its Alpha stage, but it is quite a powerful little tool.

Type in any keyword, and The Archivist will track tweets and archives your key words throughout the entire Twitter universe. It will analyze the data and provide you with six easy-to-understand visualizations. It will allow you to export the archives via Excel or .zip files to better analyze and data mine your results. Devs can even download the datasets of top users for any given archive to include in their own projects and applications!

What does this mean to you? You’ll be able to easily visualize, analyze, export and share tweets about your brand. Track trends to find out what people are saying with ease… and see what people have to say about your competition.

After using it only a few times, I have to say that I’m impressed. Try it out for yourself – I have a feeling you’ll be adding this to your arsenal of tools.

Have you ever wondered how websites used to look back in the day? Wayback Machine lets you find out easily. Oday has done this screencast for us to show all of you some of the many fun things you can do with Wayback Machine.

If you head over to the Wayback Machine, you simply need to enter the name of any website, and select from the archived dates available. It won’t give you all of the pictures and text of the old website, but you’ll get an idea of how it looked in the past. You can look through more than 150 billion web pages, archiving of which began in 1996.

On the parent site, Archive.org, there are many more interesting things to do. Browse books, music and even art. You’ll even find more than 60,000 books from the Library of Congress! This is a great place for teachers and students alike to research any number of topics. Unlike Wikipedia, the information found at Archive is reliable at all times.

Thanks, Oday, for an excellent look at a fun website!

Transferring large files to any type of service or media is a pain in the rear. It takes forever and ends up causing you to want to tear your hair out, right? This is why you should ZIP your files before sending them along their way or trying to place them onto a USB drive. Likewise, you should be crossing your fingers and hoping that every time someone sends you a large file it is sent in this manner to save you serious download troubles.

With a ZIP file, you generally have to decompress them. In some cases, you may want to look inside a compressed file, but you may not have the proper software lying around. Did you know you can view what’s in an archive without un-archiving it onto your hard drive? All you need to do is go to the Web, and head to WobZip.

To uncompress files from your computer, go to the main page and select your file by clicking the “Browse” button then on “wobzip it!”. To uncompress files from a URL, go to this page and type in your URL. Click on “wobzip it!” to upload and uncompress. A list of files will appear, and you can save your files by clicking on the filename. You can also save your files as a ZIP file by clicking on the “Download files as .zip” button.

Now you can unzip your files in school, at work or anywhere as long as you have access to the Internet. No longer will you be limited by the inability to install programs onto admin-protected computers. Your files are scanned using BitDefender, so you don’t have to worry about downloading something that is infected with nasties onto your hard drive.

Don’t let the fear of what’s inside stop you from opening ZIP files. Use WobZip to safely and easily decompress those files!

One other guest happened to be none other than Jeff Ubois – who is working to archive every single broadcast, past and present, for our own future:

Television remains the most powerful medium in our culture, but we have almost no memory for it: it is a transient, ephemeral, and therefore unaccountable medium. This site exists to accelerate the transformation of television into a medium that has a history, one that is permanently preserved, searchable, and accessible.

Advances in computing and communications mean that we can cost-effectively store broadcast, and provide access to a video collections via the Internet to students and adults all over the world. By working with existing institutions and funding sources, and creating new ones, we can provide universal access to this portion of our culture within the current worldwide library budget, just as we have done that with other media.
