RememberIt: Never Forget Things Again

Admit it: you’ve forgotten things many times in your life. You don’t have to be elderly, scatter-brained or even blond in order to lose track of something. You’re human. It happens. If you have an iPhone, though, Fernando Pizarro has created an app that may be a life-saver for you. RememberIt will sound an alarm if you move out of range of whatever item you want to be sure not to leave behind. Fernando came up with this idea after he had been out at a bar with friends. He had handed his credit card to the bartender in order to keep a tab open – and left without it. He didn’t even realize it until he tried to pay for his coffee the next morning.

There are a ton of little ways we can try to remember things, including tying a string around our finger. The problem lies in trying to figure out what the heck that string signified to begin with. This is the main problem with the RememberIt app, as well. You’re going to have to know what it is you wanted to remember when that alarm goes off. There’s no way to enter a note into the application to help you out. In the case of leaving a credit card behind, the author could have added “Don’t leave credit card at bar!” into the app. Unfortunately, there isn’t an option to do this.

You can set the alarm using a built-in noise or any song from your iTunes library. A sort of geo-fence will be set when you enable the alarm. Choose your range: 50, 200 or 500 feet and the alarm will alert you when you stray out of that range. There is a lot of room for improvement in the application, but I’m not sure there will be any. This has been created as a side project for Fernando. Any and all proceeds from its sale will be going to help fund his new business venture, which is a social video creation app that he is working on.

When was the last time you forgot something, and what was it? I know for me, the things I tend to leave behind are the things I generally end up needing the most. I’ve been told I’d forget my head if it weren’t attached to my shoulders. Thank God for those shoulders…

djay is an iPhone and iPod touch app that acts as a portable DJ system in combination with your iPod library. You get access to your favorite tracks and playlists via a realistic touchscreen interface. Perform live as a street corner DJ or be the life of the party from your iPhone.

Record mixes on-the-go or enable Automix mode and let djay mix your favorite playlist from your iPod library automatically. With a simple rotation of your iPhone or iPod touch, djay’s intuitive dual turntable setup beautifully morphs to each turntable individually, allowing you to beat-match, adjust EQs, loop, and cue with even greater precision and control.

Features of this awesome app include:

Direct access to iPod library

Hyper-realistic low-latency turntable interface

Exclusive portrait and landscape modes

Automix mode with automatic transition control (Fade, Backspin, Reverse, Brake, and Random)

Automatic beat and tempo matching (BPM sync)

Looping (Auto, Manual, and Bounce)

Cue Point Trigger

Live Recording (with built-in organizer for recorded performances)

Seamless AirPlay integration (wirelessly transmit your mix to Apple TV or AirPort Express base station)

Pre-Cueing (with optional headphone adapter)

Full visual waveform

High-quality scratching

Mixer, tempo, and EQ controls

Pitch-Bend

Beat-synchronized scrubbing

Fully optimized for iOS multitasking and background operation

Yes, you’ll find apps which are free, unlike djay. However, you will NOT find a free app that is better than this one. You get what you pay for in most cases, and that is definitely true when it comes to most apps available for your devices.

djay can turn you into the life of the party – every single time. Isn’t that “feature” alone worth its weight in gold?

Which apps are you using to become a dee-jay for a day?

Russian Films Being Sold on iTunes

According to the BBC, very old Russian movies are being sold through Apple’s iTunes service without the consent of the copyright holders. Copyright doesn’t ever “go away” – even if the media is considered to be outdated or old. Proper consent is still needed to sell things such as the movies in question, and this consent was never given to the app makers in question.

The popular movies were made available to download as separate smartphone (paid-for) apps via iTunes. The copyright owners – Russian film studio Mosfilm and the Joint State Film Collection – have said publicly that no consent was given to anyone for the films to be sold in the app store.

“It is illegal to present our films as applications either in iTunes or on any other internet site. It is permitted only on our own Mosfilm site”, Svetlana Pyleva, Mosfilm’s deputy director-general, said in an interview. “The only official internet site where you can watch legal Mosfilm content is the Mosfilm site.,” she said. “There are no third parties which we have permitted to use our content.”

Apple has said that they take claims such as this very seriously, and have already taken action.

The BBC’s Russian Service spoke to Vladimir Penshin – a programmer who lives in Ukraine who has created an app for iTunes from the film Cheburashka. He admitted that he used the content to make money without any permission: “Of course, I do not have any license agreement”, he said. “This is all very simple. The companies, who can have complaints, submit them to Apple and Apple notifies me that they have to withdraw the application.”

Mr Penshin has also created and offered for sale an application based around the animated series “Penguins of Madagascar” produced by US studio Dreamworks.

Top Apps of All Time

Apple is marching steadily toward that magic 10 billion number on their App Store downloads scale. With that magical date seemingly just around the proverbial corner, Apple has compiled lists of the top Apps of all time, including both free and paid offerings on the iPhone and iPad. Of particular interest to most of us are the entries on the iPhone free Apps list. Not surprisingly, Facebook has the number-one downloaded free App of all time, with Pandora running a close second. However, the number three spot – now that one is a surprise. I’m sure that Google is loving this, even if Steve Jobs is gnashing his teeth.

The Google Mobile App holds the number three position on that almighty list, folks – GOOGLE. I actually shouldn’t be so shocked by this: it really is a great app. You can use it to navigate to other Google services, such as Maps and Gmail, Search through your contacts, Google Maps, Images, News, and Shopping. Search with your voice instead of by type – which comes in handy when you’re driving. Heck, you can even search the web through pictures with Google Goggles. What shocks me is not that the App made it on the list, but the fact that Apple so willingly admitted it. Oh and by the way – Google Earth shows up on that particular list at number seven.

There were a few other surprises, of course. Who would have ever guessed that something called iFart Mobile would have made a top-ten list such as this? Unfortunately, I’m not joking. I’m also not admitting that I happen to have this particular App, nor that I have used it on more than one occasion.

Where do your favorite Apps fit into the list?

All-Time Top Paid iPhone Apps

Doodle Jump

iTunes Exciting Announcement Coming Tomorrow

If you’ve opened your iTunes account today, you were greeted with a very understated photo embed at the top. “Tomorrow is just another day. That you will never forget. Check back tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes.” Under that are a few clocks representing different time zones to let you easily figure out when to expect this big news. The question is – what the heck does Apple have up its sleeve this time?

There are already any number of rumors and speculation circulating around the web. Everyone is weighing in with their predictions. The truth of the matter is that for once, none of us have a single clue.

We know that iOS 4.2 is supposed to drop tomorrow morning around 10:00AM Pacific time. With that information in hand, one can easily assume that the iTunes announcement has something to do with the new firmware. MacStories wonders if Apple is going to “change the system underlying the whole software update process?” However, that’s not really a big deal, and certainly not something we’ll never forget.

Is iTunes finally going to release a music subscription service to rival options such as Pandora? Will we soon see a web-based version of the software? Your guess is as good as mine at this point, so leave me a comment and let me know what you think the folks in Cupertino have planned for us.

What apps do you have installed on your phone? How many, total? I don’t just mean iPhones, mind you – Android devices and WebOS gadgets and WP7 phones can have apps, too.

I have literally hundreds of apps on my iPhone. It’s impossible to choose a favorite. I have favorites in different categories… but I can’t pick an overall best of the best. There are some apps that I absolutely love, yes.

My favorite app is the one that does the job I need it to do at any given moment.

Draw freeform with the drag of your finger and add pre-made shapes and lines by pinching or tapping. Choose between grid and lined backgrounds or import any image or diagram from your photo library. Heck, you can even add labels and text boxes anywhere!

The app makers have included several very cool features in order to help make this THE collaboration tool of choice. Use it for preliminary sketches, group brainstorming and student projects. Share your ideas through external monitors or projectors in many different aspect ratios when using the iPad VGA adapter. It’s pretty simple to save and bookmark your notes, images and diagrams when you are finished – right within the app’s project manager.

Some key features include:

Full DropBox support

Add images as objects on the board

Laser-pointer mode for external displays.

Export boards choosing white or transparent background

If you have a project to work through by yourself – OR with others – the Whiteboard HD app may be exactly the app you’re looking for.

Bring Netflix to Your Apple Device

If you’re already a Netflix member, you know how great it is to be able to watch the shows and movies YOU want to see anytime you want to see them. Now you can get that same service on your Apple mobile devices, as well. The Netflix App allows you to instantly stream the programs to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

The app itself won’t cost you anything. Use it in conjunction with your current Netflix subscription. If you aren’t a member just yet, you can check out a free trial. Watch your favorites as often as you want, and even resume where you left off when having to get up from the television or computer. Browse movies and manage your instant queue right from your device.

This could come in very handy. Let’s say you’re watching a movie that has you completely sucked in. You’re comfy on the couch when suddenly your power goes out! Psh – no big deal. Bring Netflix up on your iPad or phone and continue. Maybe you have to head out and ride in a cab… a train… you get the picture. Watch your content any time from any place you choose.

Even those kids who never owned one ended up creating cute little works of art at a friend’s house. Those colorful tiny pegs were the bane of every mom’s existence… and created hours of enjoyment for those of us who were under the age of twelve. Who am I kidding? I’m a few years past twelve, and I’d still play with one of these if I had one here.

Electronic Arts is making it simple for you to keep your kiddo busy during a car trip or a wait at the doctor’s office. We promise not to tell anyone if you occasionally play with the Lite-Brite app yourself! The app will allow you to animate what you’ve done and even share it with friends via email, facebook or your photo reel.

You’ll find classic design templates plus many new ones. Choose to play around in free-style mode to let your inner creativity soar. Unlock more designs after completing a set number of drawings. Add colors with the swipe of a finger or pinch to zoom in or out. There’s even a Time Attack mode to challenge yourself… see how fast you can complete a template and match your score against your friends.

I love finding apps such as these for my iPhone. What cool apps are you playing with these days?

Microwave Gadgets Safely with an iPad

How often have you wondered what would happen if you stuffed your old phone into the microwave and turned it on? More sparks would fly than you could possibly imagine, I’m sure. The light show that would ensue likely would be of the magnitude found in the latest thriller at your local theater. Even though it may look cool, the threat of injury is too high to ever actually do something like this. That is why the new Microwave It app will become your new favorite toy.

The app allows you to (virtually) place any of ten included items into the microwave to watch them pop, sizzle and explode. Choose between aluminum foil, a CD, a large fluorescent bulb, ribbon, a halogen tube, a standard lightbulb, a marshmallow, paper clips, soap and steel wool to begin your heated journey. Expansion packs are available to allow you to toy with things such as an LED light string and a potato chip bag.

Keep in mind that while the app is 100% safe to use, it is NOT a good idea to actually place any of these items into a real microwave. In other words: Don’t try this at home!

Yes, I had it sitting there on my desk for a few days. Had to let the thing ripen, ya know? Anyway, this morning, in front of the live virtual audience (were you there?), I opened ‘er for the first time and copped a feel.

Initial impressions? Generally good, although I’m a bit disappointed there’s no LED flash and no ability to view actual battery usage percentage… but it shoots damn nice video. I will likely give this new iPod away at some point, as I have with older models. Stay tuned for details on that in the near future.

I’ve had iPod-like capabilities with my iPhone 4. This model interested me for one specific reason – the cameras. I’m often out and about, and need to record or capture something. If I want to record something that is on my iPhone, I can’t use the camera that is on the iPhone! The iPod touch will work perfectly for this, don’t you think?

I have to say that the little Finger Tips booklet that comes with my Apple products is cool as hell. The name is great and the tips inside are usually great, as well.

It was easy to tell that this is the 64GB model. It weighs approximately 32GB more than the 32GB model, and about 48GB more than the 16GB model. Thankfully, there’s a math app floating around in iTunes somewhere. It took a lot of fingers and toes to figure that out.

The first thing I noticed when taking the new iPod touch out of its box for the first time is how slim this little baby is. I was actually surprised by the thinness, even though I had read the specs for myself. Knowing the thickness of a new gadget doesn’t really give you a feel for what it’s like in the hand… until it’s IN your hand!

I will definitely need a good case for this, and a screen protector. Fingerprints drive me completely batshit! I also like to have good protection, so let me know what cases you recommend for this newest iteration of the iPod touch.

The nice thing about already having an iPhone and more than 800 apps is that I can sync everything right to this new iPod touch. As soon as I sync it with my iTunes account, all of my apps and data will be automagically placed onto the device.

My next question for you is: what should I do now with the iPod? Is there something I’m missing? Is there more to it than this?

Are you a fan of word games? Test your reflexes and hand-eye coordination with Alphabetic. There are several different challenges which will unlock badges as you meet them, and you can customize your own experience. If you can tear yourself away from this addictive little game, you can disable the timer and slow things down to help younger children learn their ABCs.

The object of the game is to locate all of the letters in the alphabet before your timer runs out. It’s not as easy as it sounds because the game has tons of cool animations that it uses to display the letters. This makes it harder and harder to find them quickly.
