Surviving Winter
As us Californians get this kind of arctic winter only once every 10 years, some of us could use an update as to the things that we need to do with our computer(s) to withstand this terrible and debilitating phenomenon. Some of the things I suggest are: changing the bearing grease on the hard drive to a lighter weight to avoid 'lubricant draw down' of the disk speed; turning all the fans off to avoid overcooling the CPU & internals; setting the CPU speed to a higher setting in the BIOS (Overclocking) to keep the internal temperatures up; wrapping the monitor with an electric blanket set to 7 or 8 to keep the LCD crystals from freezing and / or having the image permanently burned in the screen; turning the speakers off so the cones donÂ’t break off at the edges (same with Microphones); microwaving ink and toner cartridges for 30 seconds before printing; using a larger keyed keyboard so you can still type with gloves or mittens (same with mouse); stepping down the network from 100mbs to 10mbs to avoid bursting any cables; keeping something running on the network at all times to keep the lines from clogging with frozen packets.
