There were student loans with a cancellation clause issued to people willing to enter education during the 90s. Thousands participated and fulfilled their end of the deal (teaching in certain areas for a particular length of time); however, the cancellation program, although passed via legislation, was not funded. Those involved got screwed royally by having to pay back principal, interest, fees and anything else that could be attached. Some retired people were affected by having their social security checks, military retirement checks, etc., stopped or decreased to force repayment. The government has made it clear that they can do as they please and that the people are just a money tree.
