Good observation Dale. My guess is that it gets depressing standing in the unemployment line every day for 6 months straight. The Lockergnome newsletter has really gone in the tank as well.

That'd be “Solstice”. The winter solstice is the shortest day, the summer solstice is the longest day (from 'sol', the sun..like solar etc) These are significant days in many religions, especially the for Druids (and hippies) and other sun worshipping types. So are the equinoxes (again, there's two) these are when the night and day are equal in length. Although I confess, I know nothing about what this has to do with choosing the date for Christmas ! ;) I s'pose the pope chose it to steal the thunder of those 'pagan' religions who worshipped the sun, but that's guessing on my part.
