Are you a Good Sports Parent?
You know, I often see many kids who are stressed out, and actually hate the sport they once loved. It happens often, and sometimes… the blame lies with the parent.
Do you push your child, make them practice for many hours a day… foregoing play time and socializing? What about criticism? You may think it’s constructive, but your child may feel differently.
It’s good to push your child gently, and to help them reach their full potential. But, there’s also a fine line that we must be careful not to cross. Positive criticism is key, as is not over-doing things. Don’t go to a game and be the parent who screams and curses at the Ref for what you think was a bad call. Don’t tell your child that they should be playing better or scoring higher than “so and so”. Your child is an individual, and there will always be someone better. It’s ok to let them know that, really. That doesn’t mean they won’t succeed. It just means they know they are human.
