Someone is Getting a Free Mac Computer…

There are a lot of Geeks in our community. One of the best of the best is UncleJohn, who is a moderator in our chat room. He also has saved my butt over the past several months on a near-daily basis. I used to record the live videos using the Ustream console. After I “upgraded” to the Ustream Producer account, though, I began having all kinds of trouble when trying to save them out.

UncleJohn stepped in and now screen captures every one of my recordings and turns them into what you see here. Sadly, his old computer gave up the ghost recently. He spends so much of his own time and resources helping our community that I decided it’s time for us to give something to him in return. That something is a brand-new Macbook.

Some of you are cheering, and some of you are grumbling about my choice in computers for him. UncleJohn has always been a Windows guy, and that’s the direction we planned to go in at first. My assistant Kat and I spent hours configuring different setups on all of the major PC sites. We looked at hardware, pricing and delivery. Then I started thinking, and asked UncleJohn some questions.

It dawned on me that the best way for him to truly capture the videos is right from the raw feed. Instead of using Flash, he should be grabbing them through something on Apple’s platforms. This is how Pocket Pirillo was made. Therefore, the obvious choice in this case was a Mac, since his primary use will be to capture, encode, render, edit and upload videos.

Now, just because someone does something for the community does not mean they’re just going to get a free computer. UncleJohn has been with us for many years – as have some of you. I honestly cannot begin to count the number of hours, days and weeks he has racked up on his own time to help me out. He literally comes running to help if I happen to say his name, and never once has hesitated to drop everything if someone needed him. He’s a hell of a great guy, and I wanted to do something extra cool for him in thanks.

Please join me in thanking UncleJohn and wish him well on his Mac journey. I’ll be hooking him up with registration codes for Parallels and other software he’ll need. Hopefully I’ll be able to get him one for Camtasia, as well.
