You can get a $500 Dell with 2 GBs of RAM, a good CPU and graphics card that runs Windows well - you need to put in at least $1000 on a Mac and you get less speed and memory. I think it’s still too much of a resource hog to be on a large percentage of the machines it’s sold on – the “hardware requirements” that you mention make it hopeless to upgrade just the OS on older machines – they’re better off sticking with XP…. but that’s not what Microsoft will say if you ask them. In my opinion, Windows is a network externality: the greater the number of people who use it, the greater it's value becomes. Many people have been using Windows their whole lives. They have become used to it, and it takes a while to get used to a new operating system. I truly believe that if more people tried Ubuntu or OS X for at least a month and had time to become comfortable with the great features (and differences from Windows) they'd switch over.
