I doubt the kid has ever used a mac or been anywhere near a version *nix in his life! The problem with blogs is that ignorance has a VERY loud voice and as a result FUD spreads quickly and uncontrollably. Individuals also say things that normally they’d be too scared to say to someone directly – car drivers exhibit the same behaviour!

Another thing – enough with the “I can buy a better spec Dell…” If you compare a mac spec for spec, (including Vista ULTIMATE as the OS as it is the only version of Vista that compares with Leopard) a new HP or Dell costs more (well in the UK it does!). Time to change the record people.

I’m happy with my PC even though I have problems occasionally. Im not sure that I agree with what you said about Windows 7: “I truly believe that Win 7 will be the best windows OS EVER”. All operating systems have their pros and their cons and there will never be a “best”. Its all about preference. Anyway, nice post. I enjoyed reading it.

I agree with all of the above. I’ve tried to ween myself off of Windows repeatedly. But I keep coming back for the sheer lack of options in any other platform. I know I’ll be sternly scolded for saying that; but it’s the truth.

Great article, good job Leo! I’ve used both Macs and PCs, but Macs are so expensive… You can get a $500 Dell with 2 GBs of RAM, a good CPU and graphics card that runs Windows well – you need to put in at least $1000 on a Mac and you get less speed and memory.

I couldn’t agree more! I have four PC’s in my home , a Macbook, ipods, etc… but I still love my new Quad Core PC! Fast and cheap compared to Mac. Are there some minor issues…sure.. but what computer doesn’t?

Why does microsoft get a free pass here when Linux has always been pilloried for “not having proper drivers” ?

I think it’s still too much of a resource hog to be on a large percentage of the machines it’s sold on – the “hardware requirements” that you mention make it hopeless to upgrade just the OS on older machines – they’re better off sticking with XP…. but that’s not what Microsoft will say if you ask them. So you really want to advocate buying from a company that would like to unsophisticated users (read: your grandmother) like that?

I can see where you are coming from… but as a user of ubuntu/puppy/DSL/backtrack 3/ Xandros/ OS X and XP (at work only, because I have to), I don’t see how people would actually pay for a majority of Microsoft’s software, when they could be getting something much better for free (minus os x). In my opinion, Windows is a network externality: the greater the number of people who use it, the greater it’s value becomes.

Many people have been using Windows their whole lives. They have become used to it, and it takes a while to get used to a new operating system. I truly believe that if more people tried Ubuntu or OS X for at least a month and had time to become comfortable with the great features (and differences from Windows) they’d switch over.

So yes- some people are happy with their Windows PCs.

BUT we live in a world that settles, and if it ain’t that broken, we don’t fix it.
