Software Choices, Crashes, and Updates

Two of my regular community members joined me via Skype for this call. The three of us tossed around opinions and ideas regarding software… your choices, differences, crashes, and even updating.
Sc_Thor, wirelesspacket and I had an open discussion tonight about software.
We started off talking about software updating, and how Apple has Software Update available. Not only will this application tell you when your software needs to be updated, it will also give you a change log so that you can see what is different and what has been improved.
Next we started discussing software crashing. It’s the nature of the beast. Software will occasionally crash. It doesn’t matter if you’re using Linux, Windows or a Mac… you are still susceptible to the occasional crash. I’ve actually been impressed with software crashes twice before. The first time was when Colloquy crashed on me. A little box came up, asking me if I wanted to send a report to Apple AND Colloquy themsleves. Now that’s a great idea. Send the report directly to the software developers, so they can address the issue.
The second crash I was impressed with was from Microsoft. Back when I was beta testing Office 07, I had a crash. The box comes up… and tells me this was a known bug that has already been addressed for the next version. Now *that* is slick. I loved that one.
We then wandered into discussing the differences between Linux and FreeBSD, since most people have no idea whatsoever. Bascially, Linux uses the GNU Public License which is a monstrous document. FreeBSD uses a license that is literally two sentences long. It says basically that you cannot remove the copyright, and you must reproduce the copyright when necessary.

If you get the same specs, it’s cheaper. If you get something 10 times better than the prebuilt one then naturally it’ll cost more or as much.

1. Microsoft = a man in handcuffs
2. Apple = a man in a straight jacket.

I agree bsd has many advantages I am a total fan of pcbsd. However I think linux has grown alot more than BSD. The linux community needs to expand desktop development if not, bsd may be a better way to go. Only problem is that companies can take and not contribute.

not only is building it more inexpensive, it’s also a lot easier to get the parts you specifically want.

For the same specs I find that building your own is much cheaper, however most of the time I end up spending more building my own because I tend to buy much better parts and not notice the total cost as I am building it.

Another reason why Mac OS X is better than Windows is the code itself. OSX is built up on years of solid, stable development with BSD whereas Windows XP and Vista are derived from the old NT kernel.

Now, the Unix source code has been scrutinized, critisized and perfected over the years by many, many developers, whereas Windows code is only available to a handful of dev’s, most who write quick hacks in order to hold certain elements of the application together. Has anyone seen parts of the leaked Windows 2000 source code? Take a look at the dev comments and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
