Social Media Questions and Answers

Social Media is a huge word in my community. It can be defined in a variety of ways. It’s a way for you to be yourself on the Web, using Websites that are available to upload pictures, text and more. I’ve been doing this long before there was even a Web, so I’ve looked at tools in a different way. Ultimately, I want people to know what I’m doing. If they choose to follow me, then I can in turn follow them, get to know them and be friends. I can’t possibly be on every Social Media website. I try to stick with the ones where my friends are.
I got an email recently from Amanda, who is doing a research project for school. She was doing some research on “YouTube celebrities” and came across my profile. She wanted to know if I could help her by answering a couple of questions in the form of a video message. Me? Do a video? Whatever gave you that idea?
- How do you feel Social Media, such as YouTube, has affected your life? It’s affected my life in a very major way. It’s given me access to a gigantic audience, which amazes me to no end. If I was only publishing on my blog, I wouldn’t be reaching much of an audience. Most of the people in our live chat room wouldn’t be there if they hadn’t found me on YouTube.
- How does it feel to be a YouTube celebrity, and know that so many people watch you from around the World? I don’t consider myself as a “celebrity”, and I never will. However, it’s very cool knowing how many people from all over the world… from all backgrounds… tune in to see what we’re doing. It’s great that we can maximize the number of connections between all of us. It’s not about “celebrity”, it’s about impacting people in a positive manner.
- What would your life be like without Social Media sites? I’ve been doing things online for many years, way before these sites even came to be. My life would be the same, but I would unfortunately not be able to reach as many people. The really cool thing about this Social Media thing, is that others share my things. They may catch a clip of something really good when I’m not recording, and then upload it to their own site… or even send it to me to upload. Without YouTube, my life would be the same, but it wouldn’t be as much fun. I am grateful that YouTube IS there. It’s not about the site itself… it’s about the PEOPLE who are a part of it.
- How do you feel about things like AIM, VirtualWorld… anything else Internet related? I think it’s great that we have so many options. I hate that the world of Instant Messaging is corrupt. I hate classifying my friends in terms of the IM service they use. Why can’t there just be ONE IM client, instead of having “AIM buddies” and “Yahoo buddies” or even “GoogleTalk buddies”. There should be an open, federated Instant Messaging application. Until then, we rely on things like Trillian, Gaim or Meebo.
I hope this helps, Amanda. Understand that once you put yourself out there, you’re out there forever. You don’t even necessarily own what you’ve put out there. Speaking of Social things… don’t forget to drop by our Live Chat Room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Chris Pirillo, a master of the craft, offers his perspectiveabout social media’s effect on his life. I agree with his observations, though I don’t think the payoff in additional viewers is necessarily worth the trouble of doing a daily videocast on YouTube — at least it’s not for me. But if you’re after a

I first came across Chris back on Tech TV, and I have been following him since about his 10th YouTube video. I’ve seen them all, well, most. Some of them are useless for me and Chris (or whoever uplaods) makes that noticeable by the clear video titles.
I disagree with his views on politics and race, but that aside, I have nothing but respect for such an intelligent, giving, money saving geek.

Internet/YouTube celebrity?
Come on… this is sad and pathetic…
You man, are a real celeb. you are in magazines (you used to have your OWN tv show… with its own gameshow segment)
Seriously… its sad now people are resorting to having to find you on youtube… In my day… when someone had as much greatness we already knew it.

you are too Sweet about OpenID, but it is still a wrong dev. (or let say one more layer to stick over the tradition)
Your IP, (your computer device or yr Mobile), to interact online is actually your real online ID and this is the way Tech can track you down (anonymously or not, that is just legal issue in theory :) ) But Anonymizer and similars, and considering you as a geek, i supposed you should promote this webapp if you feel concerned by your online privacy and onlineID. Cause form my “users” point of view this my freedom that i am looking for when i am online, and i want to keep it.
Now then, Your ID do not have to be declared online. People own their ID and should remain theirs only.
Users should value with cash this ultimate information in order to allow their collectors for some marketing tracking issues.
The Today‘s deal is: i give access to crap info but then you have to give me your ID. (but is it a real deal, or some underneath hidden way lurkking the web form any data transfer form your device through your connection)
So out of it, what we got as
results> Cookies, spam, phishing, and so slowing down your goddamn connection but outrageously invading jamming the net full of useless bits.
That has a real cost: cost of time, users time, but above all energy. a waste of energy which could be cut down drastically if at once all compliant webdevelopper and other W3C norms would agree to switch off the waste.
But are they looking for being really green?
Are we still dreaming to save the planet?
We knows about email traffic (and spams), then we gone have the twitter one (blurb of noises), but we do not really care about the cookies highway and co.
We got a blind, death or reminder issues.
Nevertheless the challenge is still a long road. Cause internet took the classic business roads of those average classic media which are like print and tv.
So now the solution is to go backward or better may Fast forward and jump to a next generation of web app.
What to know more? just email me. I am an oldschool guy, but painfully witnessing the silicon ass with its daily new surgeries’ stiches. I am not critical just realistic. Users and I started to be fedup, and above all online newusers are still repeating daily the same goddamned process.
Every single webpages today asking login, just shout load meaningfully: “WE DON’T TRUST YOU” :)
the paradox of social media, isn’t it.
OpenID seems to be cool but isn’t it just the brand new centralized collector or aggregator database access to reveal online users activities to their kindly webapp members. Even though it claims the contrary.
Please forget OpenID and try to look for better investment (time and energy) on some well though stuff.
(and there are).
BTW: a simple question
what’s the led stripe blinking over your large desk? If someone asked already at your FAQ menu, pls just mention title below in order to understand what lights activity stand for.
I enjoy the show, as far as it could be repsectful to my time. Be short and essential. to much blah blah kill the topic and mainly interest.
And sorry for my long comments ;).
