Should you buy an LCD or Plasma HDTV?

It’s really a matter of personal preference when choosing one of these over the other. I personally prefer the Plasma screens, but I know many people who like the LCD more. Let’s take a look at some of the differences between the two.
With an LCD screen television, it has a much thinner screen and a smaller footprint. This means that it takes up less space generally on a tabletop or in an entertainment center. The Plasma screen tv’s tend to be much bigger. Be sure to keep the size of the space available in mind when shopping.
I feel that the image colors are much sharper and natural on the Plasma screens. With the LCD, they seem to be just not as realistic. They are either too saturated, or not saturated enough. I could never seem to find a balance that I liked.
Budget is a huge concern for most people. Always stick with what you can afford. Try to never go with “payment plans” for these items. Wait until you have enough money saved up to just go out and purchase one.
Most importantly, do your research. If you primarily watch sports, try watching a bit of sports on one of each of these televisions before deciding yourself which one is better. What’s best to your eyes, may not be best to mine, and vice versa. Never take my word for it, or anyone else’s. Make up your own mind, based on your likes, needs and budget.

I have heard that with the plasma screen TVs that if you leave an image on the screen to long, it will burn that image into the tv. so like with widesreen views those black bars above an below a movie can be burned into a plasma TV.

So true… It depends on what you want!
I like LCD… I own a 720p LG LCD 42inch… Great TV… Agree I like a sharp image. I think that LCD for me seems like a real to life color… Just depends on the user.
Its always good to look at the T.V. before purchase… Don’t buy online… unless you have seen the t.v and like its picture, options, and reviews.

Good article. If you don’t need to make a statement, and you have the room, buy a DLP. You will get more screen for the buck. Yes, it is thick; about 12 inches or so. But I place mine in between a wall unit and blends in perfectly. Plus, in three years, if you want (or have to) replace the light bulb, then your picture will look just as good as the day you purchased it.

The reason I prefer LCD was not addressed at all: longevety.

I prefer LCD’s personally, especially after working in a service department of a fairly large store chain, I kept hearing from owners and fellow workers how plasma screens may well be sharper and brighter but they burn out within a few years, the worst the LCD is going to do is have a back light fail which can be replaced or a dead pixel out of the box. When a plasma burns out the screen that’s it, the manufacturer won’t touch it as it’s not a malfunction.
Like Buggs said, inspect the TV your interested in before you buy it, and if you get it installed check the screen and audio for any defects before you sign and let the installers go.

Plasma has better contrast ratio, The black are more black, the white are more white.. but the rest scores the LCD

Plasma, plasma, plasma, plasma, plasma! I cannot stress this enough, if you like quality color saturation, and watching movies with excellent black levels get a plasma. I’ve had some experience in this area.

Chris,
Why has the embedded youtube video gotten smaller?
I have to now copy and paste your youtube video in the address bar and watch the video on youtube since the size is bigger there.
The videos here are too tiny. Revert back to the default video size please.

I personally prefer LCD because I have been told that a plasma is more prone to burn-in. We recently purchased a 42″ LCD at my volunteer fire department and I really like it, although the picture isn’t that great because we only have basic cable and it sucks.

In my opinion this is what i would do:
Up to 38″ LCD
38″ to 50″ plasma
You really don’t need anything larger but if you do 50″+ Get a projector(they are much cheaper.

LCD is a great technology. It look very nice but they don’t last very long (only 5 year at most). Plasma screen have it’s bad point too. I think they cost too much for what they give.
On the other hand, some new technologies like the OLED screens are getting better and better and they look really great. For a computer, LCD is a very nice technology. I have two Samsung monitor and they look great, but if you want a big screen (42″ or more) wait for the OLED to take is place.

I would rather get an LCD than get a Plasma TV, because they are usually a bit more expensive but they have a higher resolution and last longer.

Why did you only include plasma or LCD and not DLP in you remarks about what HDTV to get? I LOVE my Samsung 46 inch DLP!!! I had to get the 46 inch to fit in a cabinet in the family room. It is only 720P but it looks great.

From my humble point of view, LCD technology is way ahead of plasma. You see more and more manufacturers dropping plasma models for LCD. But who knows the future …

well too bad that u didn’t find any… Well, just to let u know. there are LCD that are good at looking at the angle…and Plasma will reflect if there are light hitting on it. and it doesn’t have high resolution like LCD.
