Should Weed be Legal?

I admit: I’ve never smoked marijuana. Does that make me some kind of “roll” model? Some residents of California, on the other hand, are assembling signatures to put an inititave on the November ballot to legalize weed for one and all.

What strikes me as odd with this situation isn’t the legalization of a natural substance, but that California is very much anti-smoking – something I certainly appreciated when I went out to bars, restaurants, public places, etc. Here’s what my friends had to say about it:

I'll be pretty stunned if they can get 694,354 signatures in two months. Then again, I was pretty stunned when they replaced Davis with a robot designed to hunt down and kill Sarah Connor – Dan Kaplan

sooo, will outsiders be able to order it over the internet from cali? – Chris Harris

hah probably – as long as the outsider's state gets to tax the "internet purchase" without having to deal with legality :) – andy brudtkuhl

well, i'm not a pothead, i just would probably get excited over doing something that was illegal for so many years. kind of like taking a shot at age 18 or something lol – Chris Harris

wow im not surprised… – Michael Garrison via twhirl

Ah, one of the things I love about California. We're just crazy out here. Wait to see if this hits the ballot. Feds would still crack down on everybody though. – Hutch Carpenter

wouldn't the next logical step be decriminalization? – Matthew Davidson via twhirl

why is the number of signatures so precise? 694,354, curious… – Chris Harris

my liking does not endorse the use of illegal drugs :) ha ha…just an interesting story – Sarah Perez

"Legalize it, don't criticize it…" – Larry Kless

I have a huge pet peeve with people who use the phrase 'We hold these truths to be self-evident' without understanding what that phrase means. to quote from the link: "We also hold these truths to be self-evident-That, as an intoxicant, marijuana is far less harmful to the health and safety of the People than alcohol…" 'Self-evident' means axiomatic: that it should be seen as true without requiring proof or substantiation. To say that the health risks of something should be seen as 'self-evident' is absurd. Cite the facts and the studies, rather than saying 'it's so obvious that we're right that we don't need to state how we know.' And please stop cribbing quotes from the Declaration of Independence because you think it makes you sound more legitimate. It doesn't. – Kevin Fox

I guess that would make them a Green state then, huh? ;) – Mathew A. Koeneker

Yeah if they had legized that darn thing in the 60' then the hardcore stuff may not have trickled in.. right now the problem is not weed. its Crack.meth, cheese and heroin. Addicts should be dragged off the streets and throw into rehab and dealers should be given 10 yr sentence min for possession of 1gm . Tthereafter 1yr for each additional gram of shit they are caught with. I have yet to hear a case, where a weed smoker has gone and killed some1 money to get more weed to smoke ! – Peter Dawson

I lived in California for a few years, but I don’t know if I could ever find myself a California citizen again. SF was too expensive, LA was too hot and overcrowded, and every other place wasn’t SF or LA (seemingly too remote). Even if this were to attain 694,354 signatures by September, 5, 2008 – I wouldn’t find myself any more or less compelled to move back. And even if I did move back, I wouldn’t necessarily inhale.

It’s way less harmful than alcohol. At least you have control of yourself when you are smoking marijuana.

I think it shouldn’t then kids would start getting high. Then society would go nutz.

Well i thing it should be legal. thing about it, so many arrest and prenson over population, keep in mind we paying for the presoner care. So if the weed is ligalized it is taxed and lower crime.

ps with all the hell is going on alot of people can take a ride in the clouds

I’ve smoked it, but admit I never inhaled. Yes, weed should be legal. :)

I posted on my blog like a month ago about thi, I say yes to legalization, if it’s done in all america, it’s going to be the solution to all this drug dealing…

One of Chris best blog. I think it should be legalized what harm can it do is same thing as alcohol probably those less harmful then alcohol.

I say no… It’s illegal for a reason! Its endangering to you and everyone around you… If it’s legalized, we’ll have people smokin it up and getting high in cars, causing many deaths and accidents… It just kills brain cells and makes us stupid… Medical marijuana is one thing… But it’s stupid to make it widely legal and available… Could you even imagine?

Nah weed slows down your reaction time and hinders the ability to be productive I mean it’s neat when your a teen smells great and all but really not worth it , and the average stoner would get the munchies and eat all the peanut butter you had on your most recent feed tonight :)

What’s up with the random 694,354 number.. ? Who makes up these things, honestly.

694,354 or 694,354,000 signatures; it doesn’t matter. There won’t be enough wealthy doctors, lawyers, or Indian chiefs on that petition for it to carry any weight. Marijuana is illegal, and will REMAIN illegal, because that’s the way the 1% want it! Alcohol would be illegal as well, if these lawmakers were not themselves fine upstanding drunks. We learned that years ago, when we tried prohibition.

I think that is was and is wrong to put someone in jail for smoking Pot. I do honestly believe had it just been left alone a lot of other drugs would not have surfaced and become popular. It is a good state of mind to be in on a Fri/Sat night while at home relaxing, light one up , sit back and enjoy. Yeah and for that you can go to jail. Wrong, wrong, wrong I say!

Okay, let me start with I don’t smoke weed. I’m a 54 year old accountant and when younger, tried it, never liked — just made me hungry and sleepy. But, I totally support legalization for the following four reasons.

ONE — I have never seen an aggressive pot smoker (compared to many a mean drunk)
TWO — think of the tax revenue this could generate (sales tax, income tax, etc.)
THREE — make this a viable home business
FOUR — remove the burden from the criminal justice system.

This really just isn’t a big deal.

It’s the accepted fashion now to call it “weed” and believe that it’s harmless, but we who have already passed through two or three generations of this widespread substance abuse (to call it by its real name) know better, because we have seen the results and have lived through the miseries and family tragedies that result from any kind of substance abuse. Marijuana is not harmless and does indeed cause a progressive paralysis of the all-important control systems at the center of the brain, and does indeed lead to the use of other substances that absolutely wreck the brain, the body and the life of the user. These are very blunt and unequivocal statements, the result of literally decades of seeing and dealing with this thing at every level of society, and of continuing to try to help those friends and family members who have gone down under drugs, or who are, sadly, already dead and beyond our help. At our age and level of experience, we cannot accept the statements of persons in their mid-teens who attempt to convince us that marijuana is harmless. It is not harmless, it is a poisonous detriment to the human nervous system, it results in brain damage, and it cripples and derails the life impulse in human beings before they even reach the partial maturity of their 21st birthday. And what of the long years after that, the milestones of middle age, full maturity, and old age? To live all those years with a damaged nervous system, damaged emotions, damaged perceptions—this is an undesirable fate to fall into. None of this is wild talk or fantasy, this is actual reality that we have witnessed. For Christ’s sake, adolescents, take the warning from those who already know.

Talking about Black, White and inbetween.Of the people that have worked for me over 40+yrs,about 400 used canabis, all cursed the day they started, 4 recovered totally. 1 of these was murdered because he would not supply his brother. 2 are successful Varsity(College?) graduates. The last one I don’t know about–think he is in U.K. About 350 were total loosers, some progressing to harder goods. You have to be stone raving mad,a looser, dumb, to even think of starting on this crap. Make it legal if you want to destroy your country!!!!
Bob————–R.S.A.

It is decades past time to end the War On Pleasure, which has brought far more harm to human beings than the “evils” to which it is addressed.

Why is marijuana (and many other natural substances) illegal?

Religion – Pot delivers – reliably and consistently, where supernatural intercession is vague and uncertain.

Money – Pot earns. The crime industry is fantastically successful by all measures.

Big Pharma – Natural substances cannot be patented, and they compete with enormously profitable manufactured substances which are patented.

The criminal justice system does not deliver “justice” to drug users whose ultimate goal is literally a thought crime. Instead, it produces unmeasurable harm to millions of ordinary citizens whose activities are no more risky or dangerous than driving an automobile in everyday traffic.

I am a retired nurse with chronic pain and require morphine etc daily. Marijuana MJ seems to me to be a usable medication with years of use and limited side effects poving its useablility. Of course most of the narcotics would also work. The narcotics act of 1904 or whatever believed that people were illiterate and thus could not reason for themselves. This is an argument that could not be subsatiated today. In fact those of us using narcotics are quite aware of what we are doing and are not addicted.
Addiction is a psychological question and not pharmacological. Of course I exclude nicotine.
If we spent time treating the psych problems that we spend in policing the problem we would at least have some results and less full prisons.

As of July 2nd, being under the influnece of any sort of mood altering drugs (marijuana included) is an offense on Canadian roads.

Drivers who are convicted of drug-impaired driving will face a minimum $1,000 fine for a first offence. A second conviction could result in a month in jail.

But not only Marijuana is the victim; cough syrup and anti-histamines will be considered as a mood altering (only ones that are labeled with a notice saying “not to drive while taking these drugs”).

Police officers will be able to require drivers to submit to a roadside sobriety test. As well, they can take drivers they suspect of being on drugs to a hospital for either a blood, saliva or urine test.

Should ‘Weed” be legal?

Depends on who you talk to.

I know of some lung physicians who probably think it’s just
more job security. Weed as marijuana is called is 20 times
worse than tobaccos effects on the lungs.

From the standpoint of the halluceginic efffect, it can be
somewhat like alcohol and a little or a lot can affect different
people in a variety of ways.

i dont think so because kids would go crazy with it and the world would go crazy and we would be worse than we are today.

Ok I do not smoke the stuff. I have however been a huge supporter of legalization.
in response to kevin’s comment. It is easy to see that alcohol causes more damage, swollen liver and kidneys should be the easiest thing to see. Pot belly does not mean you are a pot head, but a beer belly , well it surely explains it’s self.
I am for hemp oil for fuel hemp4fuel.com .
that is a renewable resource, just plant more.
and yes it can be regulated.
just keep growing from the same plant/batch of seeds. the stuff if it’s bad the seeds will be exactly the same as the mother and so on for each generation there after.
I don’t smoke it because I like to remember what I was doing, and I hate being sleepy. should they outlaw liquor?.. yes.

I think that if your stupid enough to smoke weed, thats your thing, what ever floats your boat, and i think that if you legalize weed then there will e less of a hassle with because people , especially teens, wont try to get there hands on it to be . so i am all for legalization of ALL drugs. I also believe seat belts should not be required. i mean if you get in a wreck and hurt your self thats your own fault and should not be forced apon you.

I couldn’t agree with Jerry more. I used to smoke marijuana at an early age, and I too thought the marijuana should be legalized. However, in retrospect, marijuana was the worst thing that ever happened to me. I lost all focus on my future. I went from A’s and B’s to high school drop out. I spent most of my days in my friends basement or somewhere else playing video games and smoking weed. I later moved on to some harder stuff that landed me in jail. The worst thing about addiction is that those affected, in the early years, believe they have control over their addiction and that they can quit anytime, or “I’m just having fun now I’ll quit when I get older”, but never do. Later on when the addiction is realized you tell yourself that you don’t care anymore. But it all starts with socially exceptable drugs like weed and alcohol. soon those drugs…. “get old” and those addicted seek out other drugs. I could go on for quite sometime about addiction. but on an ending note; I never realized what the commercial meant when they said, “no one wants to be a junkie when they grow up”. I finally truly understand that statement. Junkies just happen they aren’t planned they all started out smoking weed occasionally and through the illusion of having control they progress to much harder drugs.

I think people smoking week is just like people playing or selling fireworks, or bit torrenting, so many people do it that cops don’t really go out and look for people smoking pot. I don’t think it should be legal because it can really mess you up.

legalize it. its no worse than alcohol.
both are stupid

Short and simple… If Alcohol is legal, Weed should be legal. Far Far worse things happen when people are drinking then when they are stoned.

I really think its kind of dumb, that its illegal anyways, if they dont want to do it they dont have to!

The legalization of weed would do wonders for the reduction of petty crime and solve a host of over crowding of the prison systems. Over 70% of prisoners are in for petty possession charges. Weed has never hurt anyone really…

Unfortunately, federal law trumps state law in this case, and the feds won’t legalize it because of international anti-drug treaties.
This will be just symbolic if it passes.

Marijuana is not legalized because the pharmaceutical companies have MANY lobbyists in D.C. that get their drug of choise through and they know that marijuana would hinder business for them. It’s a plant that anyone can grow, and would be harder to regulate then the much more dangerous “legal” drugs. Their are far more legal drugs on the market that are far to easy to purchase and get a prescription for then marijuana AND they are severely more addictive (painkillers for example). It all comes down to business and there simply are not any lobbyists shelling out cash in Washington to get this drug legalized. To any educated person who is not easily brainwashed, it’s obvious that it’s rediculous for this PLANT to be illegal while so many more harmful and more addictive drugs are legal. I am a health conscious person so I wouldn’t smoke it, or smoke anything for that matter, even if it was legal. However, that is my personal CHOICE not to smoke, just as it is my CHOICE not to drink in excess or eat candy or fast food in excess (moderation is key), as well as it is my CHOICE to not take prescription drugs for pseudo illnesses that I do not have. These are all CHOICES that I now have the FREEDOM to make, just as every other American. Their simply is no justifiable reason that the choice to use marijuana should be any different.

If you have an addictive personality, then you can get addicted to anything or anyone. Regulating a substance for the population as a whole will not cure your addiction, regardless if you addicted to a legal drug or an illegal one.

Their are not enough excuses for a government to tell citizen what they can and cannot personally do for them self. If someone would stop someone from inhaling a harmless fume that they love, then isn’t that the same as prying inter-racial couples apart? I think that anything that doesn’t hold sway, which I know that less Americans approve of it being contraband than do, it should be thrown out.

it should be a controled substance.

It should not be considered like Alcohol. Although it might be as or less mind altering in the short run… MJ can be severely mind altering compared to alcohol.

it’s too easy to get high… look at the number of people addicted to tobacco. this would be worse. and look at the problems alcohol cause… no… at one point in my life I thought, Why not?, but now I realize , “why not?”.

however, as a controlled substanse it could be legal to dispense as a “medicine” for people with AIDS , terminal cancer and such things…

Alcohol is legal and its way worse. why can’t pot be legal as well?
would I smoke it if it was legal? nope.

WE all neen legal weed. so the warld wood be happy

i say legalize it. It is complet harmless, and for all those who say it shouldn’t be, u probly never don’t it, so keep your mouths shut

for all those who do not agree with the legalization of pot, have no idea on what it does to help with the average person. Not everyone gets behind the wheel of a car when their baked… some people think its a gateway drug, but it mostly makes us turn to junk food. It is a harmless plant grown naturally. It has been approved by doctors all throughout the world, and it does work.

the covernment cant hide behind their lies anymore…..because of smoking grass you dont become addicted to heroin, have homocidal tendincies, and it doesnt make you stupid………… too too much yea… your brain cells will over heat and dye……………eating it is a solution to that……and you can make ALL sorts of shit with it.. not to mention its the answer to our little recession were going through……………….. fes up USA……..WE NEED WEED!!!!

One of the top reasons I think marijuana should be legal is the government would make a lot of money from taxes on it. Studies shown the government would make 100 billion dollars every 7 yrs if they did legalize it. Another reason why I think marijuana should become legal is that a lot of people drink alcohol because it’s the only legal drug and if weed became legal a lot of people would switch from alcohol to weed and I strongly believe marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol. I think so because in 2001 there was 331 alcohol overdoses and none due to weed. Not just that but alcohol you can get physically addicited to when marijuana you can’t. If someone does experience withdrawl symptoms at all they are remarkably mild. It also doesn’t cause as much damage to the brain and liver that alcohol does. The fat cells in which that lingers are not hurt by the use of that drug. Also having a joint isn’t nearly as harmful as a can of beer. Another top reason why I think it should become legal is for medical use such as AIDS and cancer. It’s because people that have AIDS it reduces their appetite. Also it’s good for patients that have have cancer becuse it reduces the nausea they get when they go through chemotherapy. Also it’s a good solution for pain relief. Also another reason why I think is should be legal is it would reduce crime. For example, there is violece due to owing money to your dealer. If it was legal there wouldn’t be that problem because you would able to buy it at a store instead. Studies have acutually shown that weed decreases aggression not increases (like alcohol does). The other reason why I believe it should be legal is we’re using our own money on prisoners that are locked up for eather using, selling and falling drug tests. If weed was legal we wouldn’t have as many people in jail that we have to pay for. Also we let violent people and sex offenders out of jail to make room for pot users, and in my opinion I think sex offenders should be the ones in jail instead. Also marijuana enhances certain mental abilities, find new solutions to problems, enhances a persons ability to make strategic decisions and in studies people under the influence of weed have no problem remebering what they learned previously.. People that drink than drive increases their chances of risky driving, when people that smoke and drive don’t drive risky like alcohol because the person is more cautious. So that would mean a lot less traffic deaths. Studies have also shown that marijuana is not a lethal drug and not toxic to humans (like alcohol and even tobacco is). Marijuana overdoses are impossible (you have to smoke twice your body weight in lbs.) There also has been no report that marijuana causes lung cancer. American Thoracic Society in 2006 did a study that even heavy users were not found to have an increased risk of lung cancer. There was also no scientific evidence that weed doesn’t causes psychological damage or mental illness to anyone; either adults or kids. Heavy marijuana smokers don’t get any obstruction of the lung’s small airway (tobacco does cause that). Also for 25 yrs. researchers have searched for marijuana – induced amotivational syndrome and has failed to find it. In labortary studies people given high doses of weed for several months exhibit no decrease in work motivation. For examlpe, studies have shown that adults who smoke weed actually earn higher wages and college users get the same grades as non users. If you don’t want people to use marijuana then you should actually legalize it. That might sound confusing but adolescent use of marijuana is a lot lower in Netherland; which it is legal there. Another fact is there no evidence that weed causes infertility for either man or women. On top of that there has been no proof that weed causes a delay in adolescent sexual behavior. ( feminizing effects on males or masculinizing effects on females). Studies on newborns, infants and children show no consistent physical, developmental or cognitive deficits related to prenatal weed exposure. It has no impact on birth size, length of gestation, neurological development or physical abnormalities. Less than 2% of drug related emergency visits had to do with marijuana use. Hemp is also very hearty planty and would be good cash crops form farmers. The tobacco lobby said pot has the ability to some people to help them break the nicotine addiction. The government said that that since pot has been illegal for so long no politician have the political courage to tell the truth about pot. The ones who do tell the truth are defeated by their opponents and that paint them as a druggie.

Weed should be LEGAL!!!XD

What Do You Think?
