Seven Ways iTunes 10 Missed the Mark
You know, when Steve Jobs suggested (this morning, during his keynote) that the iTunes icon was outdated – I found myself nodding in severe agreement. Let’s put aside the notion that Carbon is even more outdated (and that iTunes remains completely ineffective for managing apps across multiple devices) for just a moment and focus on something a bit more tangible to the average user? Okay.
So, yes – iTunes manages music and iDevices. It also manages:
- Movies
- TV Shows
- Podcasts
- Seminars (iTunes U)
- eBooks
- Apps
- Ringtones

So why the *fuck* is a note symbol still the only thing in the icon? And, for that matter, why are we still calling it iTunes?! They renamed the iPhone OS to iOS in recent months – why couldn’t they have taken this pedestrian UI change as an opportunity to call it ANYTHING other than iTunes?! Barring any other copyright issues, here are some workable suggestions:
- iNexus
- iCenter
- iMedia
- iMatter
- iEncounter
At this rate, it’ll be iTunes 15 before we see a rebrand in conjunction with a recode (which I’ve already given up on). For anybody who would ever accuse me of being an Apple fanboi, let it be clearly known that I have never had love for iTunes.
What would I change about iTunes? It.
