I agree, you're looking for a handy-type rather than a contractor per se. We have had great luck finding skilled help for all kinds of projects through Angie's List, www.angieslist.com. There's a membership fee to join, but you get access to an amazing local database complete with customer ratings.

Coming from a family of contractors and maintenance-types, I would find a bonded handy-man for these small jobs if at all possible. Actually as I read through the list again, the whole thing seems like it would be a better fit for a handyman. Contractors are generally seeking large jobs that will sustain for a period of time. Putting on a new roof, building a deck, adding another room to a house, painting the entire house, etc.

If you are looking for something reliable, licensed and bonded, but would rather not get reamed by a contractor's (because being licensed means squat, I can get a license) inexperience or poor work ethic, consider these guys:

Just type in your zip, they have people there.

They can do anything you need and you will not be blown down into a lot of unneeded hassles. Generally speaking, you will have a *lot less* hit and miss with these guys than if you try to play contractor crap shoot.

Chris,

I've heard good things about York Enterprises of Tacoma. I'm currently taking a bid from them for an expansion of my garage. They specialize in 'green' remodeling and custom interior work. Apparently they've won quite a few awards for their work too. One of the cooler projects I've seen from the company in the trade magazines is a 'hidden' bed that slides horizontally into a wooden cabinet - saving a ton of room. Pretty trick.
