Search Marketing Experts

There’s one thing you’ll find plenty of at Search Engine Strategies-Search Engine Marketers. Everywhere we looked we found people promising to optimize, strategize and generally boost rankings in the search engines. While we haven’t had the time to do a comparison of all these services to provide an accurate look at who really delivers, we did get a chance to interview several of the experts. We talked to several companies, asking each one what differentiates their services from competitors. SmartSearch Marketing, Keyword Ranking and Elixir Systems all gave us their take on specialized search marketing services. One company confident in their abilities to deliver results is Market Leap. They offer several outstanding free tools for testing your site’s ranking and placement.

Chris from Colorado Springs

Chris called in from the road in Colorado Springs. Ponzi and Chris found out that Colorado Spring isn’t exactly known for dining, unless you enjoy Cracker Barrel.

Nuance

Nuance makes enterprise-class speed recognition software. You’ve probably heard their software in action before as they provide the backend to nearly 1000 companies.

The technology provided by Nuance is very extendable and can even be used in short podcasts since the software can translate the written text into an audio format without having a professional voice perform the task at hand. Their ultimate goal is to make voice indistinguishable from that of a human, but if it the voice is “listenable” then they feel it’s an adequate solution for many businesses.

Nuance started podcasting two months ago. They attended the Blog Business Summit because nobody has really figured out how to track the number of listeners a podcast has. So, instead of promoting a ratings system, they feel that podcasting should be used as a relationship building platform rather than a prospect building platform.

Nuance offers product demos over the phone but is looking into podcasting as an alternative way of offering their demonstrations rather than an annoying flash-based banner. In the first month of podcasting nearly 3000 people downloaded their show.

Nuance attended the Blog Business Summit because they have their own questions about how to structure content in relation to what people are looking for, as well as what is appropriate to place on the blog. Also, they are trying to figure out a course of action to take when an issue with a partner comes up, as some people may be more sensitive to having their information posted on a public form that a blog provides.

Steve also hosts his own podcast with his son called the Steve and Sam Show

Dave Winer

Chris interviews Dave Winer, and he doesn’t like internet Explorer 7 or how they’re going about implementing RSS. Speaking on how to treat customers, he also says that a CEO cannot afford to blow off any customer or former customer - no matter how small. He feels that if a person below the CEO does something wrong, the CEO can patch things up, but once the CEO disgraces the customer there is no turning back.

Dave also has mixed feelings about MoveableType. On one hand he dislikes it because the features coming out in the next revision of MT were already present in Manilla, his content management system. On the other hand he likes it because users will be able to have access to the features he feels makes Manilla so much better.

In the future Dave is going to try to integrate OPML into WordPress and try to push the idea of OPML even further.

Pigeonforge

Pigeonforge.com is a community driven site where people who have vacationed in Pigeon Forge can share their experiences - where they staid, what they liked, what to avoid, what they loved, etc.

They attended the Blog Business Summit because they have been thinking of adding a blog to the site for the past five months and though it would be interesting, so they attended the BBS to see what the fuss was about.

The site has been operating for 5 1/2 years since the owner had left high school.

They do basic advertisements: $150/month up to $2000/month. This helps cover the cost of the website as well as help with the cost of living in Pigeon Forge. The site itself focuses on content and tags as well as some big keywords (such as “pigeon forge”).

The owner was not very tech savvy and originally outsourced all of her HTML work. She really began to dabble in tech in College while on an internship with iPix. She picked up HTML while working at her internship.

Her tips: content is king - keep it fresh and correct, since there’s nothing a visitor hates more than stale inaccurate content. Also use images as people like to have a visual reference. Her big secret: keep them on the page and interested.

She’s also working on another destination-based website: TheVirginIslands.com

Tonight’s Calls

  • swordofdestiny wanted to know what he should look for in a laptop so it can run Windows Vista. Chris emphasized that he should wait until it’s closer to Vista’s release as the OS will go through more changes and its important to get the chipsets that have been optimized for it. It is recommended that he wait until 2006 and acquire a system that supports at least 64MB of Video RAM.

This Week In Games

This Week In Games - TWIG - is a weekly podcast. In every episode I’ll give you the lowdown on what’s going on in the industry, and tack along my personal opinions.

Let’s see … what did I blather on about today? Well, we covered the release of five Halo 2, a man has pleaded guilty to charges of internet piracy, Namco released their 50th Anniversary collection, and the creators of Call of dusty: Front Line are suing Activision for $10 million.

As a special request to all of the listeners of TWiG, I urge you to donate to Gimpi, a friend of ours who has Muscular Dystrophy. He will be collecting money at the MDA telethon, and will present a check on live television. He is currently accepting donations for the MDA at his website, which you can PayPal to him: GeekyGimp.com

He’s a great guy, and if you want to get to know him, he’s always in the #lockergnome irc channel at irc.wyldryde.org.
