Screw You, Outlook 2003

I can't stand it anymore; it's time to roll back to Outlook 2000 and pray to GOD IN THE HEAVENS ABOVE that someone keeps future versions of the PIM from going straight into the crapper for anybody not connecting to an Exchange server. If you rely on POP3 or IMAP, you'll be just as disappointed with the lame UI bugs and inconsistencies that plague Microsoft's latest client. Since IÂ’m going to keep the rest of Office 2003 alive, itÂ’s going to be quite a trick to downgrade midstream. IÂ’ll have to figure out a way to export my PST so that I can make the leap backwards without causing too much of a fuss. Where the hell are you when the world needs a better program, Chandler?!

I love Outlook 2003. It works great at work with an exchange server. Cached Exchange is a wonderful new feature. I use it at home with my ISP's POP email and my Hotmail account, and it works great with both of them.

I just started using Outlook 2003 at work this past week and I really like it. Haven't had any problems with it so far and it's working excellent with NewsGator and the Moveableposter plugin. Of course I'm not much of a tweaker..

Outlook 2003 is working very well for me. Using Newsgator, Hotmail and POP3 mail with it – all doing fine. I actually have to use it a lot less with the new junk mail filters. Sure, it's a bit ugly for e-mail, but I've used the “Send Feedback” form and I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet.

Hmmm, Chandler huh? I smell a review coming up!

I was about to make the switch to 2003.
What's the problem? Complain, whine, bitch, yell now so you save others from the hassles if they're relevant. Thanks.

Chris — without trying to start some kind of stupid anti/pro MS debate … why are you using Outlook 2003 if you don't need to connect to an Exchange server? I use Outlook at work because that is what I'm given, but I use such a tiny fraction of the features it offers. At home, I use Thunderbird — does everything I need, plus it's much more efficient in the resouce stakes.

PS Please could you make the font in the comments box a little bigger? It is near impossible to use in Firebird. :-)

Chris,
I can't believe you're having so much trouble with O2K3 and POP3. I'm totally in love with the new UI and search folders, and it makes NewsGator all the better. I haven't had any UI inconsistencies or serious bugs…

Outlook 2003 has its problems. We have been using it on a limited basis on our LAN and have found it isn't COMPLETELY compatible with Outlook 2000; specifically calendar functions go haywire. We had the same problem when we starting introducing Outlook 2000 and our main PIM was Outlook 98. If you were in the Linux world, I'd suggest you try Evolution. I have used it and man, what a PIM. It is everything offline Outlook should be but never was. At home on the Windows side, I use Mozilla Mail and also use the Calendar add-in. I get all the functionality that I need at home from them.

I've been using it for the past 5 weeks or so and I haven't had a single problem with it… and I'm typically very picky about stuff too.

Maybe ya'all just need some more training. Perhaps a “call for help” is on order here, um?

Chris, Outlook 2003 sucks a lot less than 2000. One bug fix alone: if in Outlook 2000 your PST file gets bigger than 2GB, it'll hose the entire thing. They fixed that bug. And, search folders? They are freaking awesome. Sounds like you haven't looked at the cool stuff that Outlook 2003 does. Sounds like you still hate the 5pixel border around the preview window. Oh well, your loss.

“Oh well, your loss” – Robert Scoble. Loss? No, Robert, loss is what Chris had when he bought the product (unless it was given him). Actually, I assume that Microsoft's TCO analysts would be able to prove that Office 2003 is less expensive than the free Open Office (although they wouldn't say that this is only true if you buy an Open Office CD packaged in compressed cocaine from a Colombian drugs baron). Here's to the EU putting an end to Microsoft's monopolistic and anti-competitive practices! It's easy to be an 'innovator' when you hold back your competitors, right?

May I humbly suggest Mozilla Thunderbird as an alternative. There are issues with it, occasionally have to send an email twice to get it to send, or it will sometimes hide an email from me but those are few and far between. I think it is a viable competition to Outlook or OE.

Love my Mac and Entourage.

I have Outlook 2003, and have absolutely no problems with it thus far. The UI is great, the new features work as I expect, and it's stable. That's something I can't say for most MS products. Where does your hatred stem from? Were you beatin by a Microsoft Employee?

Outlook's IMAP functionality is full of bugs. Both 2003 and 2000 have proven to be a major pain for our company. Exchange is the devil and I refuse to use it. The reason we have to stick with Outlook is because it is the only client that supports IMAP and is MAPI compliant.

Colin D. Devroe said “Where does your hatred stem from? Were you beatin by a Microsoft Employee?” It's not hard to hate Microsoft's buggy software that you have to pay extortionate prices for. When the Israeli Government recently switched to Open Office instead of Microsoft Office, Microsoft said that Israel was “tight fisted”! Ha! I guess to TCO thing doesn't work out right?

What is a PIM again? I recently just updated to the XP version of Office and its version of Outlook is pretty useful for me. Thanks for letting us know what Outlook 2K3 is all about. My best wishes that you get Outlook 2000 installed on your computer.

It seems Chandler is in murky water. They say they gonna do something but they just don't have the momentum to do it.

Outlook 2003 is a memory hAWG

like network administrator i know only problems with this email “client”

Outlook 2003 cause loss of functions with MS office products if they have not been upgraded to Office 2003. Yeah MS gives you Outlook 2003 free wuth Exchange CAL's but they forgot to tell you that you gotta spend hundreds more per client to get it to work right. I have been instructed to take it off the system even though they like the new look and fell because they lose the most important thing, function

All you that are in praise of Outlook 2003, can you please tell me how to stop it freezing up for 5-10 minutes at a time numerous times during my day, especially when I return from being away from my PC for a while? Please, I don’t want to quit using Outlook (there are plugins I need and use that only work with Outlook) but I can’t take this frustration much longer…

Just think your a bit of a dick mate to be honest !

Get a life !!!

Did any of you numnuts read the date of the article? This came from 2003!!!!
