Screen Capture Software
http://live.pirillo.com/ - Screen capturing in Windows Vista can be tricky. You can use the old standby “print screen” button, which will copy the entire contents of your Desktop to the clipboard, or press alt and “print screen” at the same time to capture just the current window you’re working in. Once you do that you can paste the image into your favorite image editor.
Of course, that’s a bit of a bulky way to capture screen shots. That’s why Kenny Kerr created Window Clippings, a free program that eliminates the annoying step of pasting the image into a program by saving the screenshot directly into a PNG file.
It’s very nice, very clean, and very unobtrusive.
The chat room has some other suggestions for capturing screen shots, which you may want to check out:
What do you use to capture screenshots?

Chris Pirillo published a video highlighting Window Clippings on The Chris Pirillo Show today. You can also watch the video on YouTube. Thanks Chris! By the way “Kerr” rhymes with “spur” and “blur” and does not rhyme with “air”. :) © 2007 Kenny Kerr

I work as a Content Developer, and I have to say that I am a big fan of SnagIt. The product is easy to use, and has a good set of features.
The product allows you to select what type of screen shot you want - full screen, window, or web page.
The latest versions even allow the links on a web page to stay be captured in the graphic, or will scroll down if the web page is bigger than a single page.
After a screen shot is taken, SnagIt has an editor that you can use to edit or create effects on the image.

I totally agree with thomas’ comments. I write ebooks and have been using snaggit for quite awhile. With the link capture capabillity it is now even better than ever. It is one of the easiest capture untils that i have ever used.

I recommend WinSnap from NTWind - (www.ntwind.com) -it will let you capture all sorts of different types (including regions or odd shaped windows) and it works with Vista.
I’ve been using this for a while and it’s fantastic! It makes documenting things so much easier when you can grab just the portion of the screen you need for an explanation.

tsk tsk tsk…it’s FREE, but hope readers aren’t duped into construing that to means it’s FREEware..read :
“Registration
Buy now - A Window Clippings 2.0 license key unlocks all the features that require registration. It costs only $10 to purchase a single user license.
The following features are only available to registered users:
Include mouse pointer
Allow object selection
Freeze window during capture
Delay before capture (used to capture pop-ups)
Copy image file to clipboard (this is distinct from the “Copy to clipboard” action which is still available to non-registered users)
Change image format settings
Post-save events
Crop or expand selection
Registering and configuring add-ins”
Oh the humanity……regsiterware? Crippleware per se….it does do a great job, but it’s only kinda sorta free….feeware?
Just my 2 cents (that is all I can offer as I need to save $10 to register and unlock the awesome features that are WindowsClippings)
Hey try FastStone Cature..oh wait that’s shareware too…oops

I’ve Howie’s Funware Quick Screen Capture (howiesfunware.com) for at least eight years… you can save the image in either bmp or jpg format. And it’s free! oh, and by the way — MORE COWBELL!

I’ve used many screen capture apps and prefer SnagIt. I would never have purchased it myself, though. For something as simple as screen capture and with so many available options out there, I’ve never thought about spending money on a screen capture program. But my J.O.B. gives me all the software they insist that I use and I’m glad to have found SnagIt because it is more useful than any others. It also does video although I have not used it for video yet. I have also heard Camtasia is good.

I tried WindowClippings and wasn’t impressed.
I un-installed so I could go back to my favourite Gadwin PrintScreen which I’ve been using it for about 6 months. The latest free version is 4.1. You can select a hot and save in any one of 4 formats. You can capture a full screen or a portion of a screen which provides a magnified window for precision capturing. Their Pro version is 4.2 is not free but it is loaded with features.

Was there a way to get out of phone contracts? Since they force this on you for deals.

My favorite is Capture from FastStone
http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm
It has a lot of the functionality like SnagIt but at half the price.
Personally I find SnagIt overpriced, but that’s just my opinion.
Capture was freeware until recently, but then again so was WindowsClippings.
Both have gone the shareware route.
It will be interesting to see if a lot of people are turned off
by that move.

FastStone went to shareware?! Darn. Guess I won’t be upgrading any more. It’s not that I begrudge the developers the money - it’s just that I don’t have any to spend. It’s a really nice TINY little application.

I see suggestions for other print screen utilities, that I will at least try, but I don’t think they will beat SnagIt.
I need a screen capture utility to create professional high quality images that I’ve used in published and non published material.
For me the issue is - go with a lower priced product, and have to perform a bunch of workarounds to get what I want, or buy SnagIt - just under $40 on their website and I know it will do everything that I want and need it to do.
Any of the following inputs can be used:
Region, Window, Full Screen, Scrolling window or Web page that keeps the links.
SnagIt has 11 outputs including some of the following:
Printer, Clipboard, File, E-mail, Catalog and Instant Messenger to name a few.
If File is selected as an output, there are 11 file formats the file can be saved to including:
JPG, PNG, SWF and PDF to name a few.
AND there are effects included as well as a image editor.
You can create profiles - this type of input, to this type of output.
If you need a very versatile screen capture program, with a high level of functionality, I wouldn’t hesistate to recommend SnagIt.

The best program I have ever used for screen shots is 5 clicks by interapple.
One of the best features is that when you grab part of the screen such as a procedure from a web page or help file it stays on top so that you can use it as a reference. You then have a choice rather you want to copy to the clip board save it, print, or discard.
small great proggie !

I’ve been using FastStone Capture for about a year. I liked the intro of a portable version, and I also noticed that they just went the shareware route. It’s an excellent, small program, but a capture program that cannot capture menus and their drop-downs is not worth paying real money for. If FS Capture ever adds that functionality, then I might be interested in upgrading.
