Saitek Backlit LED Eclipse II USB Keyboard Review

I absolutely love gadgets and gizmos that glow. The more of a glow it gives off, the more I enjoy it. This is why I was excited to test out this new keyboard from Saitek.

The new Eclipse II keyboard is backlit. You can change to one of three colors: red, blue or purple. The purple works best in my office with the lights off, and also allows me to admire my Tix above the desk. The backlighting has adjustable brightness. Of course, knowing me… I prefer the brightest setting.

The keyboard itself is very good. The keys mash the way I want them to mash. The Windows key is in the correct place. I could see myself switching over to this keyboard permanently, except for one not-so-small issue.

My desk has a keyboard tray underneath it that pulls out. I know many of you have them, as well. This keyboard is bulky. It’s just too thick on the verticle profile. It doesn’t fit well on my keyboard drawer, and my hands hit the underside of my desk. The lip on the front of the keyboard helps a bit, but just not enough. You should never rest your palms on your keyboard. Practicing good ergonomics is critical to your body’s health.

What keyboard do you use? What is your favorite keyboard of all time? Most importantly, what do you look for in a keyboard when you purchase one? Send me an email to chris@pirillo.com or leave me a comment on this video.

UPDATE:

I saw the review of the keyboard and I was excited because I own, and once used, the Saitek Eclipse II. I say own and used because after about 5 weeks the spacebar key broke. It didn’t break all the way off, just one of the glue-pads that holds it on popped off. So now the spacebar is floppy and when I’m typing and try to hit it with my thumbs it feels like it clicks all the way but it doesn’t and I end up typinglikethis. No spaces, bummer. It also sorta seems pretty cheaply made too… :( Now I use a Logitech wireless and I own it for the simple reason of it is very, very flat. I was hoping to get an Apple wireless keyboard for my PC but it’s bluetooth (my PC isn’t) and the ones my store carries doesn’t say that it works on Windows. :(

Keep up all the good work Chris!

Hi,
Maybe you could lower your keyboard tray enough so that your hands don’t hit the underside of your desk. I don’t know if a small enough adjustment could be made that would give your hands enough room while not sitting your keyboard too low. Just an idea.

that keyboard really isn’t “new”. I’ve had mine for over a year. first and only time I’ve actually bought a keyboard (as opposed to using the one the PC comes with). it’s very cool, love the blue glow. the music/volume control buttons are handy too.

Sweet! I am sooooo getting this one…. better than the one on think geek

Oh yes, the old IBM keyboards were the best. I used one on my old Dell 386 back in the day. I thought it (the computer) was really something because I had upgraded to 4 MB of RAM, and got the IBM keyboard from the IT guy at work. Awesome!

I am now using the Enermax aluminum, not the one Chris has, but the one with the black keys. I like it very much, but it feels a tad small compared to the wireless Sony keyboard I used to have.

im using an old compaq keyboard it must be around 7 years old i have modded it to usb and made it wireless

ooh how did u go around doing that. i have a usb keyboard i wanna make wireless

I only have the first edition =(

I use Saitek 1 and G7 mouse

ive got old ‘BANG BANG’ BTC ps/2 keyboard from year 2k. love it ;*

i’m still using the dell PS/2 keyboard that came with my computer. i liked it because it has multimedia controls on it. but it’s getting old and starting to go bad, so the next keyboard i’m looking into is the logitech wave keyboard. but whether i get that one or not, i need an ergonomic one because i spend way too much time at my pc to not have one :)

I’ve been using the ergonomic (split) keyboards for the last 6 years. I’m currently using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 and absolutely love it.

Im using a laptop and hate it. Im setting it up like a desktop with a monitor. I still need to get a mouse and keyboard. I was going to get the logitech classic optical mouse and the standard keyboard. Are these good buys?

I use a keyboard that types. It came with my computer and it does the job :)

I.m with Chris all the way on this one. Give the old Klackity Klack IBM key board. Right now I’m useing a Belkin key board. I like it and I got it for free which makes it double good.

i have the original eclipse! I got it for free and LOVE it! a BIG thumbs up!

New zboard merc!! it also glows! Zboards are the only real gaming keyboard out there.

keytronics has always been pretty decent, but cherry makes the best quality avail if at a price.. those ibm ones chris mentioned actually had a weighty metal plate inside .. dont smash it over anyones head, or you’ll kill the one u swing at

Hey, I got one of those about a month ago, using it right now. It’s great for nightowls like me.

Only two issues for me; It could be a little more sensitive, once in a while I miss a keystroke because of that. Also the backlighting could be a bit brighter, maybe if they come out with a yellow one I will upgrade, my son would love this hand-me-down.

It does accomplish it’s mission of lighting up the keyboard enough to be able to use it without turning the lamp on.

MY favorite keyboard, which I still use daily, is my OmniKey Ultra by Northgate Computer Systems, long out of business.

i have the Saitek Eclipse 1 and a Razer Diomondback gameing mouse both are insanely awesom and are great for gameing!

i us the Cheap dell keyboard that comes with it lol. i love the clackers :O

I have been using the same Logitech wireless keyboard for over 8 years. I have tried others but nothings beats it. Most of the new wireless keyboards insist on doubling the size of the delete key and making the insert key a tiny key on the function key row. I am very old school and instinctively use shift insert when doing pasting. Its so much easier then doing ctrl v since I never use the right ctrl.

I just use my HP keyboard that came with both my old and new PC

I have the original Saitek Eclipse and I prefer it to the new one. It always seems that whenever a updated product comes out they decide to cram it full of gizmo’s.

which is better?? Saitek Eclipse II or the Logitech G15?? help!!

We have the “Clackers” at school. I use some kind of gateway…I want the eclipse II…I like lights…LOTS OF LIGHTS. But yea, i have no idea…its just one that came with the PC 6 years ago.

coolest keyboard, saitek is awesome, the joystick and controllers is nice too

lol he reminds me of jim from american pie lol

i have an eclipse II that’s why i searched for it lol….

would this be good for gaming

I remember the clackers too. I actually got told by my teacher to type slower so it wasn’t so freaking loud.

My favourite though, has to be the EZ-8000. I’m one of these people that likes to have a keyboard layout that just works. It was a big keyboard, and it just barely fit into my computer desk, and was full of buttons that just made life almost liveable without a mouse.

Then I remember StarCraft, and my mouse becomes necessary again.

i just got a eclipse II it rocks!

I use the Saitek Eclipse 2 lol under the desk no problem

I hate desks with the sliding thing…. I like to have the computer and everything on the same level with plenty of space…

i have jusr ordered this keyboard, because it looked so cool:D And i couldn’t get the cyborg :(

i have an “x-gene” usb wireless which i absolutely love because its tiny, fits comfortably on my lap, and has a trackball so i dont even have to use my mouse.

The keys on this keybaord are not quiet what so ever they are loud. so don’t get this if you want something with quiet keys, cause you wont like this keyboard for that reason. Overall though it’s a nice keyboard, but anyway, i’d suggest the Microsoft wave……..

is there anyway to connect in a way that it flashes with your music?

do this keybored work on apple comps?

OMG HOW TEH *** CCOULD HE BE MAKIGN FUNN CAPZ LOK ZOMFG NOW I FUKIGN HAT E TIHS AZZH0LE N ALL U DIKS TAHT LIEK HIM N ALL HIS FAM N SHIIT OMG TAHT MAKS ME SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PISD!!1!11!1!!ONE!!11!1ONE.

(I’m kidding I really like Prillo, so for the love of god, spare my inbox, please.)

Love the keyboard, too.

That’s a good idea. I’ll have to try to jury-rig the sound sensor off of my case lighting onto the backlights on my keyboard. As far as I know, though, it’s not a standard feature.
