It looks like your mom has missed traveling! Well, retirement gives you the opportunity to enjoy things that you were not able to do before. It's time for your mom to just relax and rest. Hehe. It now falls on you to accompany her on her new stage in life. Cheers Chris! :)

Make sure that #6 and #8 are important to her. If she's volunteering in a cause that she believes in, she'll be very happy. :-) Try to keep some kind of a routine so she doesn't fall into the TV trap.

Dear Chris Pirilo's Mom:

Eventually, you will get sick or traveling (or too broke). You will get sick of visiting and kids. Volunteer work will convince you that the average recipient of volunteers' efforts are lazy, shiftless bums.

So what's left to do? Get a job, that's what.

Being a door greater at Wal Mart gets old, so I recommend starting your own business. There's one I know of that will get you out in the sunshine and introduce you to many interesting creatures; Professional Pooper Scooper. Lets face it, people love their pets, but don't have the time or inclination to pick up after them. Your clients could be private homeowners, or an property owners will wide open areas where people "walk" their dogs (now THERE's a euphemism). I'm willing to bet you can pick up quite a bit of change and get some much-needed exercise as well.

I;m sure Chris could whip up a Web site to promote your new start-up.

Need any more advice, let me know.

Gardening is great! When I retire I'm looking forward to doing more gardening. Since she'll be traveling lots, she can use native plants that don't require fussing.

Would your mom consider touring the world? How about a cruise? Personally I've always preferred flying to a country (after studying thoroughly the particulars of that country and how to stay safe) and basically get lost. It's always fun to meet new people, since being lost will really mean you will have to talk to people :D

Two words: Volunteer work.

She can't occupy all her time with traveling. If she doesn't need the money, perhaps her part-time job can be something in the nonprofit sector, helping out with a cause she supports in a way that utilizes her skills so her mind is kept active.

The most important thing, though, is that she do things every day that exercise her cognitive, memory, and reasoning skills. Studies have shown that this is one of the most important things you can do to prevent or delay the onset of age-related loss of mental function.

Whatever will keep her young. Which is another way of saying "whatever she really loves to do." One of the myths about our society is the retirement myth -- that everyone will stop working on a certain date and just play golf. Most people can't do that for very long, and if they are in good health and intelligent, they merely segue from one career to another. If your mom were 40, this would be called her midlife crisis.
