Retirement Ideas
My mom is retiring on May 1st. It is a day that will live in infamy. I asked her what she planned on doing, and she wrote back (not on company time, mind you):
1st, travel, we leave for the Missouri rally the next day
2nd, work out at the Campus whenever I want to, instead of having to cram it into my schedule
3rd, travel, we have a State campout the first weekend in June
4th, go for bike rides (sometimes with G-pa)
5th, travel, we go to Montana for a rally in July
6th, get a part-time job
7th, travel, I come to Gnomedex in August (if I can figure out a direct flight)
8th, do some volunteer work
9th, travel, we leave for Alaska late August
10th, travel to visit my darling sons and daughter-in-laws in WA and TX !!!
What else should my mom be considering in her retirement? :)

Hi Chris — you guys could do a whole Letterman-esque thing. Have her appear on the broadcast, live from home. Kick it off from Gnomedex. You could attract a whole new community segment to the Pirillo gang. Of course, she could always go solo. Mary

Whatever will keep her young. Which is another way of saying “whatever she really loves to do.” One of the myths about our society is the retirement myth — that everyone will stop working on a certain date and just play golf. Most people can’t do that for very long, and if they are in good health and intelligent, they merely segue from one career to another. If your mom were 40, this would be called her midlife crisis.

Two words: Volunteer work.
She can’t occupy all her time with traveling. If she doesn’t need the money, perhaps her part-time job can be something in the nonprofit sector, helping out with a cause she supports in a way that utilizes her skills so her mind is kept active.
The most important thing, though, is that she do things every day that exercise her cognitive, memory, and reasoning skills. Studies have shown that this is one of the most important things you can do to prevent or delay the onset of age-related loss of mental function.

Would your mom consider touring the world? How about a cruise? Personally I’ve always preferred flying to a country (after studying thoroughly the particulars of that country and how to stay safe) and basically get lost. It’s always fun to meet new people, since being lost will really mean you will have to talk to people :D

Cruze! Alaska or Mexico via nice cruise line? I’m surprised you haven’t bucked up and sent her on a gift cruise for retirement?

Gardening is great! When I retire I’m looking forward to doing more gardening. Since she’ll be traveling lots, she can use native plants that don’t require fussing.

Dear Chris Pirilo’s Mom:
Eventually, you will get sick or traveling (or too broke). You will get sick of visiting and kids. Volunteer work will convince you that the average recipient of volunteers’ efforts are lazy, shiftless bums.
So what’s left to do? Get a job, that’s what.
Being a door greater at Wal Mart gets old, so I recommend starting your own business. There’s one I know of that will get you out in the sunshine and introduce you to many interesting creatures; Professional Pooper Scooper. Lets face it, people love their pets, but don’t have the time or inclination to pick up after them. Your clients could be private homeowners, or an property owners will wide open areas where people “walk” their dogs (now THERE’s a euphemism). I’m willing to bet you can pick up quite a bit of change and get some much-needed exercise as well.
I;m sure Chris could whip up a Web site to promote your new start-up.
Need any more advice, let me know.

Make sure that #6 and #8 are important to her. If she’s volunteering in a cause that she believes in, she’ll be very happy. :-) Try to keep some kind of a routine so she doesn’t fall into the TV trap.

I think that blogging would be a good way go – with many experiences to share I’m sure the blog would be very interesting and popular.
