In response to all of you, including H. Robert Lewis: It seems that many of you want to take this opportunity of Memorial Day to bash current or former administrations for the circumstances leading to war. MEMORIAL DAY IS NOT INTENDED FOR POLITICAL DIATRIBE! It is a day for rememberance and thanks to those who served and currently serve this country in the Armed Forces.
Yes, you have free speech and can say anything you want intelligent or not. Why? Because without our military, past and present, you most likely would not have the same freedom!
My heartfelt thanks to all who served and serve to today. It is a shame that not all Americans appreciate your sacrifice. As evidenced by some of the posts here.

What I find most amusing (or disturbing) about the overwhelming majority of the comments here is that their authors are assuming that Chris wrote or somehow agrees with Robert Lewis' sentiments. I believe ending with “is he mostly right, or mostly wrong?” is asking for intelligent discussion about the subject; not condemning anyone for having a potentially different opinion on the matter.
I don't think that most people who disagree with our current government's actions (like myself) have anything but utmost respect for those who are in the unenviable position of carrying out its so-called “War On Terror” in Iraq (which, as we now well know, had nothing to do with the tragedy of September 11th and nothing to do with the Weapons of Mass Destruction we were assured were there by poker-faced crooks in suits). We support them by wishing them a swift and safe return and remembering those who didn't make it back.
And we hope the next election turns out better than the last two. Amen.

Instead of asking questions and contemplating the meaning of memorial day, why don't you get off your ass and do something about it. Clean up a soldiers gravesite or plant flowers or just take a minute out of your day and think about someone besides yourself. The freedom to speak your mind and question why we should remember those who have died is only possible thanks to those who have served and died for our country. Maybee when October rolls around and all the free thinkers start blogging about why we should celebrate Veterans day, some of you could find a veteran and thank them for allowing you to be such an asshole.

Another pathetic attempt to stir upinterest in your dying blog? Really – Lockergnome is little more than RSS feed and advertising anymore. Honor the men and women whose sacrifices enable you to persue your way of life – if Memorial Day has lost it's meaning to you as compared to your youthful recollections then you should start there – what has happened to YOU?

Huh?? Blacklisting him how? For questioning society? For posting the thoughts of another who questions society? If we cannot suffer that which offends us in print, what's next? Does that make those wars any less important or should we think less of war veterans for this? Absolutely not. Speak out against the wars if you find the need to do so, but the soldiers on the lines are heroes. To think anything less of them only makes YOU the coward.

Mr. Lewis' comments have stirred quite an angry response here.
What did he say that ISN'T true??
If you were to take a poll, most Americans under the age of 50 have no clue about the history of Memorial Day or it's current intended purpose.
Oh wait, it's current intended purpose IS the first holiday of the summer and a great time to get a so-called deal on furniture or a new car.
Nobody expects anyone to stand in silent memorial for 24 hours…where did THAT come from anyway?? Heck, most people in this country don't even know we're supposed to take a moment of silence at 3pm eastern for that purpose, much less all day.
It's sad. We all SHOULD take a unified moment of silence to not only remember those who died in past wars, but especially those who are dying now for Bush's little power war.
As far as the first anonymous poster goes…. is THAT the best the school system is doing to educate you in communication skills??

First off, historically Memorial Day was a holiday in the U.S. South to honour the Confederate war dead. Yeah, how's that for irony. Honouring all war dead didn't come about until later in the 20th century.
Here in Canada the May long weekend (last week) is Victoria Day, honouring Queen Victoria's birthday. Here we are also trying to get another holiday for June so there is a long weekend in each month of the summer.
As for the true meaning of Memorial Day being lost, I agree. When I was a kid growing up in Westwood, MA I remember as a Boy Scout marching in the very solemn parde to the cemetary, I don't think it happens anymore.
In contract Nov 11 (Veterans Day in the U.S. Rememberance Day in Canada) is very much honoured and solemn. No, Rememberance Day sales. The day off is not “celebrated” there are solemn parades and ceremonies at Cenetaphs around the country. There is a National pause as 11:00 AM passes through the timezones.
That's truly honouring.

in place as the prefered currency against the growing influence of the euro, and to reinforce
and preserve the current Geo Political power structure which controls the 7 trillion dollar oil industry, which presently resides in the united states and certain countries in Europe.
