Remembering Memorial Day?
What are we memorializing – or who? It's a holiday weekend here in the US, and many families have gone on a three-day vacation. Monday is Memorial Day, and some would argue that the original meaning of the holiday has been lost. I'm doing nothing other than catching up on a pile of tasks throughout this entire break (lest something else come up), but I haven't really paid attention to the overly-commercial nature of Memorial Day. Lockergnomie H. Robert Lewis weighs in:
I believe that, indeed, the original meaning of Memorial Day has been lost in the greed of commercialism… and the overwhelming hedonism that has gripped our nation in the last seventy years.
No longer do we honor our dead [vis a vis Memorial Day]. We honor only what makes us “feel good” or that which increases our wealth and status.
Our congress has steadily made a mockery of our national traditions in order to create long weekends for Federal workers. We no longer celebrate the birthdays of Washington (2/22) and Lincoln (2/12). They were moved to a Monday in February. Martin Luther King's Birthday (1/15) was designated to fall on a Monday. I wonder how long it will be until Independance Day and Christmas fall to the power of the legislator's pen.
Memorial Day now means the first mini-vacation of the summer; the chance for merchants to hawk their goods; another opportunity to be paid for producing nothing. Our National Ethic has changed since I was a boy. That was a time when there was respect and pride for those who had fallen while protcting us. That Ethic is dead in the wake of dirty little “police actions” and rampant new-age colonialism; a war that was implemented by an oil baron to steal oil. How can we respect that?
So, the question remains: is he mostly right, or mostly wrong? I'm certain that Memorial Day doesn't mean the same thing to me as it once did to my elders – but whose fault is that?

I disagree that the government has anything to do with how we feel about these holidays.
I think that we are more numb to war and things that happened in years past for just that reason….it happened in years past.
We are all still passionate on September 11th, and will be forever. Why? Because it is fresh to us, just like other wars and MLK are fresh to our elders. It's just how it happens.
Unfortunately for our men and women overseas, Americans turn their back on them because we disagree with our government and president. It is not their fault, they are doing their job. They put their life on the line for us every day.
I salute them.

H. Robert Lewis can speak for himself. Memorial Day to me means honoring all those who have died to give us the ability to say and do what we want – including making dumb ass comments like he has done here.
I respect your right to post this – I don't respect you for doing it.

As much as I dislike Bush, how can ***anyone*** look at gas prices in the U.S. currently and then accuse the man of invading Iraq to steal oil? Sir, discuss this from a more rational point of view and I'll be happy to pay more attention. Personally, though, I cannot stand the “holier than thou” types who want me to spend this Monday in silent worship, or perhaps saluting the flag with my hand over my heart for 24 hours.

While I'm at odds about what the whole Iraq war is really about, I have nothing but respect
for the kids who put their lives on the line for their country.
Memorial day is about paying respects to those types of people, I also beleive freedom of speech is everybodies God given right.
Whether you speak favorably or negativly about the actions of this country, you are intitled.

Yes, oil baron to steal oil! Good call, that must be why the price of oil has gone up in the last year.
Good call, idiot!

It has more to do with securing oil in the face of growing Chinese industrial might, it's simply a premptive strike to secure the worlds second largest oilfield, and to attempt to keep the dollar
in place as the prefered currency against the growing influence of the euro, and to reinforce
and preserve the current Geo Political power structure which controls the 7 trillion dollar oil industry, which presently resides in the united states and certain countries in Europe.
And don't be surprised at what's coming, Iran is next and a draft will follow.

First off, historically Memorial Day was a holiday in the U.S. South to honour the Confederate war dead. Yeah, how's that for irony. Honouring all war dead didn't come about until later in the 20th century.
Here in Canada the May long weekend (last week) is Victoria Day, honouring Queen Victoria's birthday. Here we are also trying to get another holiday for June so there is a long weekend in each month of the summer.
As for the true meaning of Memorial Day being lost, I agree. When I was a kid growing up in Westwood, MA I remember as a Boy Scout marching in the very solemn parde to the cemetary, I don't think it happens anymore.
In contract Nov 11 (Veterans Day in the U.S. Rememberance Day in Canada) is very much honoured and solemn. No, Rememberance Day sales. The day off is not “celebrated” there are solemn parades and ceremonies at Cenetaphs around the country. There is a National pause as 11:00 AM passes through the timezones.
That's truly honouring.

Mr. Lewis' comments have stirred quite an angry response here.
What did he say that ISN'T true??
If you were to take a poll, most Americans under the age of 50 have no clue about the history of Memorial Day or it's current intended purpose.
Oh wait, it's current intended purpose IS the first holiday of the summer and a great time to get a so-called deal on furniture or a new car.
Nobody expects anyone to stand in silent memorial for 24 hours…where did THAT come from anyway?? Heck, most people in this country don't even know we're supposed to take a moment of silence at 3pm eastern for that purpose, much less all day.
It's sad. We all SHOULD take a unified moment of silence to not only remember those who died in past wars, but especially those who are dying now for Bush's little power war.
As far as the first anonymous poster goes…. is THAT the best the school system is doing to educate you in communication skills??
Heaven (or Bush) help us all!
yup… I'm semi-anonymous too.

The Revolutionary War was about money.
The Civil War was about money.
World War I was about money.
World War II was about money.
See a pattern?
Does that make those wars any less important or should we think less of war veterans for this? Absolutely not. Speak out against the wars if you find the need to do so, but the soldiers on the lines are heroes. To think anything less of them only makes YOU the coward.

“chris you should really consider what you blog….. allot of people are now considering blacklisting you over this….”
Huh?? Blacklisting him how? For questioning society? For posting the thoughts of another who questions society? If we cannot suffer that which offends us in print, what's next? Do we make Chris wear a gold star? Why not just shove him into a boxcar and ship him off to an interment camp and be done with it? You should really THINK about the words you are using and what they MEAN before you post. You're either ignorant or a budding facist. Not that there's really a difference.

Another pathetic attempt to stir upinterest in your dying blog? Really – Lockergnome is little more than RSS feed and advertising anymore. Honor the men and women whose sacrifices enable you to persue your way of life – if Memorial Day has lost it's meaning to you as compared to your youthful recollections then you should start there – what has happened to YOU?
Blacklisted- nah. Just dissappointed.

Chris,
You and Robert are flippin cockweeds. You are the very symbol of sh!t that this country has become. People are putting their lives on the line to be able to afford you the freedom to spew moronic statements about what you think is or isn't right. But to disprespect our fallen warriors is unacceptable. You lack of respect is an abomination. I hope we do indeed initiate a draft and they haul you chump ksinny chicken-bone ass out to the desert and maybe THEN will you appreciate what it means to have bullets whizzing by your head while some frillipn assmonkey is launching an RPG at your Hummer as you are trying to pull your buddy to safety after having him just get his arm blown off. THINK before you write you asscunt. Between the partial feeds and now this stupidity, I am hereby UNSUBSCRIBED to this shitrag poor excuse of a blog. F*CK YOU and your advertising. May you burn in hell.

Instead of asking questions and contemplating the meaning of memorial day, why don't you get off your ass and do something about it. Clean up a soldiers gravesite or plant flowers or just take a minute out of your day and think about someone besides yourself. The freedom to speak your mind and question why we should remember those who have died is only possible thanks to those who have served and died for our country. Maybee when October rolls around and all the free thinkers start blogging about why we should celebrate Veterans day, some of you could find a veteran and thank them for allowing you to be such an asshole.

What I find most amusing (or disturbing) about the overwhelming majority of the comments here is that their authors are assuming that Chris wrote or somehow agrees with Robert Lewis' sentiments. I believe ending with “is he mostly right, or mostly wrong?” is asking for intelligent discussion about the subject; not condemning anyone for having a potentially different opinion on the matter.
I don't think that most people who disagree with our current government's actions (like myself) have anything but utmost respect for those who are in the unenviable position of carrying out its so-called “War On Terror” in Iraq (which, as we now well know, had nothing to do with the tragedy of September 11th and nothing to do with the Weapons of Mass Destruction we were assured were there by poker-faced crooks in suits). We support them by wishing them a swift and safe return and remembering those who didn't make it back.
And we hope the next election turns out better than the last two. Amen.

In response to all of you, including H. Robert Lewis: It seems that many of you want to take this opportunity of Memorial Day to bash current or former administrations for the circumstances leading to war. MEMORIAL DAY IS NOT INTENDED FOR POLITICAL DIATRIBE! It is a day for rememberance and thanks to those who served and currently serve this country in the Armed Forces.
Yes, you have free speech and can say anything you want intelligent or not. Why? Because without our military, past and present, you most likely would not have the same freedom!
My heartfelt thanks to all who served and serve to today. It is a shame that not all Americans appreciate your sacrifice. As evidenced by some of the posts here.
