Radio Silence

I’m still crawling out from underneath a pile of tasks, and it’s going to take me a lot longer than previously expected to get everything back on track. We’re overcoming our software woes one day at a time, and I’m also learning that intelligent Drupal developers are in absolute short supply – to the point where I don’t think the platform will be around for too much longer.

I’m not being silent because I want to be silent – I’m just trying to formulate my thoughts before saying anything about Gnomedex, and how I found it to be an amazing success (despite the various issues associated with this year’s production). Every year is different, and that’s what I love most about the conference. I have a lot to say about a lot of things – but I can’t say everything right now because I simply do not have the time.

It was an absolute joy to spend an extended weekend with my parents and assorted in-laws – as well as to meet up with old friends and make hundreds of new ones. Imperfectly perfect.

… that they seldom come true. And in the age of the forever web making bold but inevitably false predictions is eventually going to get fingers poked at you. Almost a year ago now, podcasting jockey Chris Pirillo predicted thatDrupal was dying because of a shortage of ‘intelligent’ developers. I don’t know if he’s forgotten his economics lessons, but low supply means one of two things: read more

I just wrote a blog post titled How Long Will Drupal Be Around? in response to a post by tech blogger Chris Pirillo. In Chris’ post he laments the shortage of Drupal developers and even goes so far to state, “…I don’t think the platform will be around for too much longer.” Read my post to see my response. I have had the same misgivings about Drupal for a long time. My frustration from using it was pure inflexibility in the templeting system amongst other things I was happy to leave Drupal behind several years ago.

Drupal developers are harder to find because in my mind the development platform is more diverse than it was 18 months ago. Why learn and use php when you can use Ruby on Rails?

[...] Not very long if you ask Chris Pirillo. He recently stated that, “…intelligent Drupal developers are in absolute short supply – to the point where I don’t think the platform will be around for too much longer.” [...]

At least the stress is over with now ;), and I certainly loved watching the stream of gnomedex every minute of it ;)

Can’t wait to read what you thought of the show. Thanks again to you and Ponzi for the hard work put into it.

Talented Drupal developers are in no shorter supply than talented LAMP developers, in general, IMO. Demand is ludicrously high for good Drupal devs right now — which suggests to me that, if anything, this bodes well for Drupal’s future. If there is a very high demand (right now there are 6 figure Drupal dev jobs out there) it’ll inspire more talented folks to learn it. If there was a lot of available, cheap talent it would be a deterrent for folks to spend time learning the platform…

Where can I get mp3 recordings of the gnomedex sessions?

[...] Chris, I know you’ve been here before. So, in the chance that you read this post, keep up the good work. I enjoyed meeting and talking to you for a few minutes while I was there. Gnomedex is an interesting conference, and calling it the “un-conference” really is appropriate. The energy you bring to it plays a large role in what carries the conference along. I can guess the amount of work that you and Ponzi had to put into that thing to pull it off. So, well done, my friend. I would be interested to see why you called it “imperfectly perfect“, although I think that’s an apt description. Will I go next year? Probably. 20c9 Related Articles To Check Out [...]
