I think PSP is far better than ipod ->
1. bigger screen
2. dedicated gaming
3. replaceable battery
4. life span (if ipod’s battery wear outs you need to replace the whole unit)
5. easy file management
6. Wifi
7. Bluetooth

and for those who are irritated with UMD
PSP Go is in the market with 16GB inbuilt memory
and can be extended upto 32 GB with 16 GB Memory Stick Micro

Hi,
I’ve got both systems and I like my psp much more then my iPod, why?

The iPod screen suckt when you compare it to the psp screen. And what’s the price of a 2Gb stick these days? like 40$ on 2Gb fit like 3-4 movies. You can also put some music on it.

The iPod screen is just to small for watching movies on it. It just was a waste of money. You’re better of buying a normal iPod then the video version.

I think they are completely different devices, now that time has passed, i’m going with the PSP. I owned a PSP since its launch date, and have been there to see it grow into a little child. Now i have 3 4 gig memory sticks, which i can fit every nintendo game ever made, every sega game ever made, ever game boy color/advance game ever made pluse other games on it as well. I mean the resolution on the screen is unparalleled, and quite frankly, who needs an ipod, when i have a dell axim x51v that will do all the ipod will, plus tomtom nav, plus sync everything in outlook, plus wifi phone, plus more…….ipods are for pussies

I have both a PSP and a 60GB IPod video (my first iPod). Since getting the iPod, I haven't turned the PSP on once. The iPod goes everywhere with me. I recently went into a store here in the UK and saw UMDs on sale for Â£15. That was the last nail in the coffin.. the PSP is now for sale. Sony isn't a company i will be doing business with for the foreseeable future.

Its an interesting comparison you have there.
But i hardly see the two as being a competition with each other. I'd love ot have a PSP … but it wouldnt make any sense for me to take it to work or the gym. They are both great and hardly see them as mutually exclusive.
PSP is a gaming device that can play videos.
iPod music device that can play videos, i hardly see either one as a primary function.

i have a psp with 1gig memorystick and i'm about to sell it.
1) umd's should be $5
2) memorysticks are not for storage (like #2 said, must plan content)
3) ipod = easy one-hand operation
4) the psp will NOT do movies, music and photos cheaper. $300 = 30gigs; $250 = 32megs +$100 for 1 memory stick.

“blindly”? I think that's a bit harsh of a way to put it, but I can see your opinion on the subject.
As for why _not_ to go for the PSP, just one of many reasons: $30 UMD movies that I can ONLY watch on a PSP–when I can get the DVD for cheaper and watch it just about anywhere.
Sony needs to stop with their proprietary formats. If not for that, they would have beaten Apple years ago.

Bassam, you're right – Sony have restricted the full resolution of the screen to their own use. PSP video encoding software has to use MPEG-4, 29.97 fps at 320 x 240.
This can be “zoomed” to fill the screen, but encoders like PSP Video 9 have a “hacked header” mode that lets them do MPEG-4 at 368 x 208 (16:9), which works out better for cinematic movies, even though it still doesn't make use of the full resolution which UMD movies ($$$) and games can use.
Damn Sony!
Interestingly, despite Chris's claims that the iPod screen is much smaller, when you view a 4:3 320×240 video at native resolution (if you don't like the blurring effect from scaling) on the PSP, it measures 3.1″ diagonally. The iPod measures 2.5″ diagonally.
The PSP is bigger certainly, but the implied huge vs tiny “duh!” is a bit of an exaggeration, especially when resolution is taken into account (which a lot of people simply don't understand). Also, the iPod screen actually feels larger than it is due to a smaller bezel and less stuff (joystick buttons, etc) around it.
If only we could make use of the full PSP screen resolution. Damn Sony (again)!

You know, Chris, there is a third option: I just got a Creative Zen Vision. Yeah, it has some viewing-angle issues, but it has 30GB, runs all sorts of codecs, including DivX and Xvid, and hooks up the the TV really nicely. Oh, and it supports up to 640×480 resolution.
Yeah, it still has the 4×3 aspect ratio, but even with letterbox bars, I still think it has a higher resolution than the PSP.
Of course, the PSP does have a way better screen, but I go for the 30 GB HD and 4.5 hours of video playback and TV connectivity of the Zen Vision.

Congratulations on another PSP convert, Chris! PSPs are great, Ponzi will love it.
If you need to recommend some “chick games,” everyone knows about the wonderful Lumines which, being a bit like Tetris, appeals to the feminine mind, but also check out Mercury – a thinking girl's exercise in dexterity.
Not really sure though that you should have made it yet another anti-iPod rant (points 8 and 10 on the iPod list are a bit offensive – at least give your readers some credit for being able to buy what suits them).
I have both the PSP and a 60GB iPod and I love them both, but they're quite different devices. I carry the iPod almost everywhere because it is so small, whereas the PSP is something I tend to deliberately plan to take somewhere (eg, park bench to play a game, watch a re-encoded DivX movie download, etc).
I find the iPod is much better for keeping a whole bunch of stuff that I might want to watch somewhere to kill time (waiting for a bus, doctor's waiting room, etc). It's great for video podcasts, downloaded “howtos” for the net, my last three years of snaps & home movies, other net content – just throw everything into iTunes and it's there when you need it.
The PSP, with the 1GB MS I have, is great for planning to watch something, like a movie in 16:9 aspect ratio, but I can't really leave stuff on there for casual browsing – I have to plan what to transfer ahead of time.

I'm not sure I can support Sony anymore with the whole rootkit bit. If they think spyware is good for you, and will essentially hack your pc, what will they do to your PSP?
