Yeah, that is a related comment...rescue the notes readers!
Well, it actually has to do with the bit about breeders... rescue one.
There are lots of good links so far... and there are a lot of rescues in the area.

Chris, pure bred dogs are susceptible to a variety of ailments. Talk to a breeder. It is heartbreaking to buy a companion only to find she has a heart defect or congenital deafness after the fact.

Bulldogs are the best, I have had three. Each one lived to be 11 so the short lifespan issue is not always true. I have had other dogs, but none have ever lived up to the amount of complete love that bulldogs have for their owners. Make sure you shop around and get the pup with the right attitude for you. Roll him or her over on their back and see of they can breathe well. The bottom line is they will have unconditional love for you......

Bulldogs do have their problems as mention. Something about their nose being shoved up inside their head. I had a friend of the family that raised and showed the dogs. They definetly aren't much for the outdoors, the heat really gets to them (he had a house built for them with their own air conditioning because of the breathing problems). A good site that I used when selecting a breed (which ended up being a mini schnauzer) was http://www.thepetprofessor.com/secPetProfile/petProfile_dog.asp?breed=dog

Bulldogs are very cool but as mentioned above, they do have a short lifespan, my favorite breed is the mini schnauzers, they are VERY lovable and smart dogs.

what jozjozjoz says. Also, I would recommend going to a shelter or rescue organization.
The best dogs of all are the mutts, IMO. :)

Seriously, is Ponzi going to be OK that these dogs do not have a very long lifespan and often have health issues early on?
What is her fascination with bulldogs? Maybe there's a better match???

You don't just go to a breeder to get a champion, you go to a breeder for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that you can see the environment the dog is raised in and the behavior of the parents. That's how I obtained my two children, the mini-longhair doxies.
That said, rescue efforts are a wonderful way to find quality pets -- but you may often find pets that don't mix well with children this way as well, because of bad experiences.
Either way, good luck!
