PowerBar Snack Bars

I must thank Nestle Nutrition for creating nutrition bars that are truly good – both in taste and in contents. PowerBar sets the bar. When I'm away from home, I need to find something good to eat throughout the day. Problem is: 90% of the “health foods” out there aren't very healthy. I refuse to ingest anything (knowingly) with either hydrogenated oil (trans fat) or high fructose corn syrup – which rules out a majority of the readily available snacks on the market. It pisses me off to no end, actually. I tried a PowerBar Triple Threat a few weeks ago and fell in love. At only 220 calories per bar, it lists ingredients that are happily natural. A few minutes ago, I tried my first PowerBar Harvest Whole Grain Strawberry Crunch; check out the ingredients list:

Whole Oats, Brown Rice Syrup, Rice Crisps (Milled Rice, Sugar, Salt, Barley Malt), Dried Strawberries (Strawberries, Apple Juice Concentrate, Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil), Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Brown Rice Flour, Dried Cranberries (Sugar, Cranberries, Sunflower Oil), Roasted Soy Beans, Almond Butter, Honey, Pear and Grape Juice Concentrate, Soy Protein Isolate, Natural Flavors, Glycerin, Oat Fiber, Nonfat Milk

Nice. Tasty. Convenient. Available. PowerBar is the only brand I can rely on and recommend to others without hesitation. I also get the female-optimized Pria for quicker snacks at 110 calories per bar. Beats the hell out of any candy bar – any hour of the day, any day of the week. Don't settle for second best, folks – this is your body and your health we're talking about here. I wouldn't be able to survive “vacations” without PowerBar! I haven't yet tried the PowerBar Performance or ProteinPlus foods – but I'd imagine they're just as good. Triple Threat is my favorite – now a part of my daily dining routine.

Sorry, Chris, but your PowerBar is probably 30% pure sugar, which really isn't that much different than a plain chocolate bar nor is it “good” for you. The second and fifth ingredients are essentially sugar syrups (especially the “evaporated cane juice”…duh, that's a euphemism for cane sugar!). Note also all the concentrated fruit juices–again, basically flavored sugar. The reason why some bars taste better than others is generally that the yuccky ones have a lot less sugar and more of that disgusting tasting soy protein. You'd be better off eating a small dark semisweet chocolate bar (to get those phenols!) and some almonds (to get fiber and omega 3 oils). You'd be getting a LOT less sugar.

>Problem is: 90% of the “health foods” out there aren't very healthy.
So you can't buy locally any of the following “healthy” snack foods:
Apple
Grapes
Orange
Tangerine
Bannana
Celery
Tomatos
Plum
Pluat
The above all have very convienient packaging. The below are a little less convieniently packaged, generally need a knife to open package:
Watermelon (not as well packaged)
Canaloupe
Papya
Kiwi
Mango
Where I live, many stores stock the above “snack” foods.

You might also try the MOJO Bar – made by Clif.
Filled with whole nuts, organic pretzel pieces, and other tasty morsels, MOJO Bar currently contains 36% to 52% organic ingredients.

You have to be really careful when you read ingredients, as the amount of sugar is carefully disguised (see first comment above). Regarding the second comment, fruit is really great and I suppose you could even get a little hydrator and make your own dried fruit if you're concerned about your snack having too short a shelf life. Incidentally, I commend you for banning transfats from your life.

220 calories? There's a large number of the “so-called” unhealthy snacks with only 160!
