PIM

For years, I've lamented the direction of Microsoft Outlook – opting to stick with Outlook 2000 instead of the bass-ackwards Outlook XP and even more kludgy Outlook 2003. Great Exchange clients, no argument – but I don't use Exchange. I use the Internet, and I need an Internet PIM. A personal information manager that runs fast, efficiently, and helps me stay connected to my tasks, notes, feeds, updates, calendar, email, etc. I don't want piecemeal solutions – I want a single client. A single information manager that doesn't mangle my time.
Then I found out what Nat Friedman's team at Novell is doing: porting Evolution to Windows. HALLELUJAH! Never heard of Evolution? Oh, you will – and I'll likely be one of its strongest Windows-side advocates. I want to help them help me make the switch. So, Tor Lillqvist, if you're listening – let me offer my public support for your efforts. I'd love to help test the software on the Windows side of things, offering feedback specifically on usability and UI – two features which are severely lacking in newer Outlook products. I can only hope that you might be able to figure out how to import PSTs and integrate with Pocket PCs. There's virtually no PIM competition on the Windows desktop today, and it'll be quite awhile before Chandler becomes a usable end-user product.

An ounce of relaxation is better than a pound of therapy. Enjoy your life while you’ve got it. This is a great stress-buster. Cheap (well it’s free. Fees may apply) and effective! Is it just me, or is Evolution just an Outlook clone? I don't really see why you'd want an imitation Outlook when you could have the real thing. Outlook 2000 and XP never impressed me hugely, but 2003 has been great to work with, even without Exchange. Sure, there's room for improvement, and I'm all for competition in a marketplace that obviously has very little right now. But you'd think they could at least *try* and make it look different.

I have tried to move to evolution on linux and been most annoyed by the existence of a powerful anti-spam capability. I just started using Cloudmark Safety Bar in Outlook 2003 and am stunned at how effective it is. I will probably distribute it to everyone in our little consulting practice. Evolution: give my spam blocking and I'm there. It would be the only really integrated, cross-platform PIM.

Chris what's the beef with Outlook 2003? Did I miss the review where you detailed the things you hate about it? I know you hate it, but I can't figure out why.
