Penut is a little bigger than an actual peanut, but he’s a pet therapy dog. Ellen is a friend of mine who stopped by on my birthday this past weekend, and she brought Peanut along with her.

A Therapy dog is one who is taken to hospitals and nursing homes. Their job is simply to make patients smile. Peanut is certified and licensed to be a therapy dog, through Delta Society. Delta Society’s Pet Partners program trains volunteers and screens volunteers and their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities.

Ellen and Penut love bringing joy to people, it’s what they do. Penut is also involved in a reading program. He goes and sits at Barnes and Noble, where kids to read to him. It promotes children reading, at their own pace, without having to worry about if they’re saying each word correctly or if they’re a little slower at reading out loud than another kid. It tends to help kids with their self-confidence when it comes to reading.

Penut also went to a camp last week for kids with special needs. He spent a few hours with other pet therapy dogs, allowing the kids to come and just pet and love on him. The kids were able to play and interact with him, hug and kiss him, and anything else the children wanted.

Penut is a big-time people person, of that there is no doubt! What Ellen and Penut are doing is just very cool, and I’m proud of them. I’m even more proud that Ellen feels my little sweet girl Pixie would make a good therapy dog. I might just have to check into that for us.
