Personal Software Firewall
http://live.pirillo.com/ – Perseco asks Chris what is recommendations are for a personal software firewall.
First, Chris recommends staying away from the built in Windows Firewall and finding a good software firewall that you trust and can configure better. He also recommends staying away from Windows Live OneCare, as it doesn’t perform as well as other products.
- Introducing Norton 360 – All-In-One-Security!
- Download the NEW Norton Confidential
- Save $5 on Norton AntiVirus 10.0 for Macintosh when purchased via the US store!
- Save 20% when you purchase Norton Internet Security 3.0 for Macintosh via the US store!
Comodo comes recommended from the chat room if you’re looking for a free personal software firewall:
Unfortunately, most firewalls leak. But Comodo’s Firewall is unique in that it passes all known leak tests to ensure the integrity of data entering and exiting your system. Comodo has put firewall through all kinds of sophisticated tests to ensure its firewall powerful enough to ward off these attacks with default settings. No other firewall has had to work this hard. Take this test yourself.
Symantec sells Norton Internet Security 2007:
Key Features of Norton Internet Security 2007:
- Automatically detects and blocks viruses, spyware, and worms
- Advanced phishing protection identifies and blocks fraudulent websites
- Rootkit Protection finds and removes hidden threats in the operating system
- Smart firewall blocks hackers and stops spyware transmitting unauthorized information
- Intrusion Prevention automatically shields newly discovered security vulnerabilities
- Network protection configures security settings when logged on at home, or on public networks
- Full System Scan performs a deep scan to remove existing viruses, spyware and other threats
- Norton Protection Center provides a central place to easily check overall security settings
Zonealarm Pro is an all-inclusive firewall and privacy protection suite:
- The Most Secure Firewall with Privacy and Identity Protection
- Delivers proactive firewall protection.
- Proactively protects your PC with the most advanced, multi-layered, firewall-based security available.
- Prevents and removes spyware.
- Stops spyware before it gets on your PC, removes spyware already on it, and offers extra protection from dangerous websites.
- Protects your privacy and identity.
- Stops hackers and criminals from stealing your identity or financial assets.
Of course, a firewall is only one part of the equation: you should also have anti-virus and spyware protection for additional security.

Have you looked at “PC Tools Firewall Plus”?
It appears to me to be about the best free firewall yet, and I’ve tried a lot of them … the other’s that I’ve tried just don’t seem to be as good as this one. Comodo, for one, was just too obtrusive and I had a great deal of difficulty getting rid of it when I decided to do so.

I’ve tried them all, but Sygate Personal Firewall stays my favorite.
CA bought and shut down Sygate a few years ago as an anti-competitive measure, but it can still be found floating on the Internet.
SPF doesn’t slow down the Internet connection like Zonealarm and is not as obtrusive as Comodo and Norton. It installs and de-installs easily and completely. Although now discontinued, it can still compete with any other personal firewall mentioned above.

I will try Sygate’s next. V-Com’s (Avanquest) Systemsuite uses this for their firewall (as of the earlier versions) and it worked pretty good then. I have been using Trend Micro’s as a temp resolution but don’t like it. It notifies you only once when an outbound program tries to communicate but you have tell it to notify you again if the same program tries to communicate again. Otherwise there is NO communication coming or going network-wise. I liked ZA but it used to much resources especially w/ an A-V and A-S software running at the same time. Comodo seemed to be the answer until after installation my wireless connection quit (I had same prob. on another laptop (Comodo was not heard of at that time) when upgrading to Win. XPSP2). Uninstalling it restored the connection back to normal.

I use Sunbelt Kerio personal firewall. I find it easy to use, not a pest, and their tech support answers emailed questions quickly when I have needed help. I use it in place of Zone Alarm, which I found had gotten to bloated and intrusive.

Personnal Software Firewall,
There are several good ones, but does it work with your setup.
Run the tests at GRC.com ShieldsUP, and at PCFlank to ensure it passes the Open Port tests and Leak tests. If you use a router see if you can connect with out it for these tests.
The router acts as a hardware firewall, adding another layer of security, you cannot completely check how well your firewall is protecting. Some programs you use (not the firewall) may result in open ports when doing that scan..
It is important when doing the PCFlank leak test, to download the file to your HD. I normally just hit run instead of download and it fails, also never check the box “remember this” wen checking allow.
Run your cleanup programs and reboot. Now click on the PCFlank test. and it will ask you to manually start your browser (in my case IE7) remember “do not click remember when your firewall asks to allow” PCFlank will now ask you to type in information, allow your firewall a few seconds to process and produce the security popup, you you hit allow yo will fail this test.
Hope your firewall passes! My free Zone Alarm did not, because of another program I use, have since switched and after adding 2 rules my firewall now passes…

As to Harry’s point about the sygate personal firewall, it wasn’t CA that bought them. It was symantec, and they just stopped the free version. They have largely replaced their old firewall with the better sygate technology, it just isn’t free anymore.

Solution from Search-and-destroy.
If you own a computer, you must have antispyware to keep it running at its best. The problem is choosing a scan that works. I have tried many different types of scans in the past and then I ran across Search-and-destroy Antispyware. I have to say that the antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy is the best that I have used to date. It gets the job done and keeps my computer working like new. If you are interested in seeing for yourself just how good this antispyware works you can click on Search-and-destroy to learn more. I’m sure it would be worth your time to check it out.
