Optimize Your ISPs Slow Internet Connection

How many days of the year do you complain about your connection speed? How many times do you mutter and groan that you aren’t getting the promised speeds? Here are some excellent tips to help you boost that speed.

  • Schedule your downloads. There are many free download managers that allow you to set up downloads to go consecutively while you are asleep. Otherwise you’d have all of them going at one time, which could result in broken downloads. This is also VERY useful if you have HughesNet and always exceed your download threshold. You can schedule files to download late at night while the threshold is not in place. I recommend iGetter and Free Download Manager.
  • Download items that you visit every day, rather than reloading them. If you’re like me, you listen to YouTube movies in the background of just about everything you do so you don’t have to pay a dollar for the song, but every time you come back to that page it takes a long time to reload. Instead of reloading the page you can download the video with Youtube Downloader and convert it into a usable format, including mp3, with that same program. Flash games can also be downloaded if you’re using Firefox. Wait for the flash file to load 100% and choose File > Save Page As. Then open up the folder you saved and take out the .swf file. Right click the file and choose to open it with Firefox. (You can then delete the folder)
  • Know when to click links. If a page is loaded 100%, search for the next link you are going to use before you start viewing the page. If you find it, open it in a new tab and it can load while you are busy on the first page. If a page is in the middle of loading, but you find the link you want before it’s done, click stop before continuing on to the next link. Unless you know you’ll be occupied for a long time on one page (or away from the computer), don’t try to load multiple pages at a time.
  • Leech!! If you have a laptop and know someone with DSL/Cable or other form of high speed, bring it over there and download as many things as you can to keep yourself occupied while on your slow connection. This may seem like mooching, but you can make it less obvious. Schedule LOTS of downloads before going over there. Then, once you’re there, plug your laptop in, resume the downloads, and do what you would normally do whenever you visit.
  • Increase your cache size. If you increase the size of your cache and put your computer in sleep mode rather than shutting it down every night, frequently used pages will load quicker. To do this in Firefox, go to Tools > Options… > Advanced Icon > Network Tab.

comcast sucks. i’ve used it for years. it goes out as it pleases….Dial up was more reliable hahahah. but Over all comcast is pretty fast

I have 512/kbps. Now THATS slow.

if you average out the amount of time that Comcast is down per month, you can download more content on 56k. I was so happy the day we dumped Craptastic for Verizon FiOS. 5Mb/s down, 2Mb/s up. With Craptastic, it was like “2Mb/s” down (more often 1Mb/s or less), 56k up.

Comcast’s crappiness has nothing to do with you internal routers in your house other than them giving you crappy routers. But then again, geeks recommend getting your own router anyways.

Im with Bigpond,
I live in Australia, Australia only has ADSL2+ 28Mbps,
I pay for 8Mbps (Best in my city) and receive 1MBps which is perfect and im on a 25GB bandwidth allowance per month.
All ISP’s in Aus have a restriction.
But that is soon to change as our new Prime Minister (President) is bring in better ISP standards.

i Am with dodo in australia and get 8Mbps and it suxs there is off peak and on peak like after 1 am i get 15 gig and after
9 am i get 15 gig but i am updating to 50 gig
next month

I’ve only got 2MB but it downloads at around 260-350kb/s - which is plenty fast enough for what I do. Online gaming, downloads and general surfing.

I live in Newfoundland, Canada in a very small community and we only have 2 ISP ones dial up(Aliant) and other one is cable(Persona)I have Persona I pay $70 a month and I get 3 kbs and sometimes slower its so much bullshit

Are you sure you have the Bytes and bits in the right order, because there are very few ISPs that give you 2 MegaBytes/sec, sounds more like 2Megabites/sec, which if that is true, then the 260Kilobytes is right on. 8 bits = 1 byte, so we do the math 260 kbytes/sec times 8 equals 2080 kilobits/sec, which we devide by 1024 and we get 2.03Megabites per second. This is easily confused and a lot of people get pissed at their ISP when they get different speeds, but after the math it all makes sense.

Hehe, well.. whatever it is.. doesn’t make a difference to me. I’m paying what I was back when I was on 512k, but now I’m downloading at like 10x the speed lol :D

I think you’re being a bit hard on AcuteFX esp as you seem to have invented a new unit - what’s a Megabite? Sounds like something from MacDonalds. Surely YOU mean Megabit?

I apologize if I came off sounding rude, I only meant to clarify the situation. There is a difference between Megabytes and Megabits. 1byte = 8 bits. ISP’s confuse the average consumer with the bytes vs bits. Computer downloads are measured in Bytes while ISP’s advertise in bits. They do this because its a higher number and consumers like higher numbers when it comes to internet speed.

here in England were i live Virgin Media has Fibre from there servers to our houses but we can pay extra for it to be installed into our houses for around about £5.00 per/m and then it’s a full fibre connection which isn’t that expensive it’s about £22.50 per/m i think!

As a long-time user of unlimited broadband, I don’t understand your ‘download at night’ idea. I download things I need immediately.

What I do? I move to Stockholm and get 100mbit BBB

hell no comcast is ******* fast

Leopard’s web clips is good for songs.

Leopard’s web clips is good for songs.

i got armstrong zooom 500, speed of 100mbit

did anyone ever paid for 1mb but gets actually 5mb. caus for som reason im payin ten pounds but im gettin 5mb of it. very wierd i think they got confused or somthin. im using aol. hmm might be sm kinda luck

Use a faster browser, IE is slow, Opera or Firefox are just better at loading pages faster, also optimize the registry settings for faster load, there are plenty of programs out there that do this but Im gonna recommend my favorite, Tune-Up Utilities, it also has tons of other tools that will increases the overall Performance of your PC too, and tons of other stuff as well. If your using Firefox, I recommend using the addon Adblock Plus, this will block any ads from loading on ur pages.

I also recommend FasterFox addon for Firefox, it makes a MUCH faster load and I have been using it since I first started using Firefox, but also be warned the FasterFox uses the Pipelining ability in Firefox, it makes the load faster but may not be compatible with some File servers resulting in broken items.

I get a solid 100 Mbps

There is an RWIN tweak on the net, talked about at DSLreports. I did this a month ago on a hard drive I had to reinstall after not using it since dial-up. My USB Road Runner connection on a Win98SE machine was around 768kbps, but with the RWIN tweak I got it pumped up to around 1800 mbps. I did this a few years ago on the hard drive I used to have in this machine, same result.

tweaks/1._DRTCP

I can’t seem to post the dslreports URL in any form whatsoever.

Even with my good download speed, it is very difficult to comment while the YT video is reloading! I wish there was a stop loading button on each video so we could stop loading it so we can comment.

I use a NetGear modem with 3 computers and a laptop(wireless) plugged in. For me, I use an Internet Connection Speed increase in Tuneup Utilities.
