Opinions are like…
There's an awful lot of hoopla surrounding Marc Canter's recent announcement about bringing even more commercialization into the blogosphere. I'm thrilled to see that Lockergnome was thrown into the discussion, which tells me that I'm doing something right (or wrong, which is still right). Jason was probably the most prolific in his public response, although it didn't really attempt “solve” the problem. Robin nailed it (as usual). Wait – what problem? Let's see… at Gnomedex this year, when I asked the crowd if they'd like to make money from their online efforts, an overwhleming majority of them raised their hands. That's a problem without a solution, and is exactly where programs like Google AdSense and Blogads come into play. I've made great strides in the past year to give folks traffic boosts just for contributing regularly to LG. It's all about give and take, and right now, you've got a lot of great opinions out there which are not getting read – because they don't have the reach. But does that make the written or spoken perspective any less valid or valuable? Or, let me put it to you another way: if you could quit your full-time job tomorrow, would you?

Well, yes. And as a matter of fact, I DID just quit my full-time job.

I rely on no other source of income but the Internet.
Chris, you are right, we have all to kneel and say thanks to AdSense for having allowed this to become a reality. At the same time I need also to expand and rapidly diversify my income streams as AdSense is anything but a certainty and depending exclusively on it would mean literal suicide.
It is thanks to your good pioneering work on this front that many can also attempt to make this jump. I myself heavily rely and model after some of your best ideas, adapted to my style and audience to better capitalize on the good work you have done previously.
Point is: I guess most everyone would love to quit her daytime job and live off publishing online just like you have proven to do.
But the real tough question is: outside of AdSense, which is per se a highly delicate juggle to play, are you ready to monetize quality work in multiple parallel income streams on top of what AdSense can provide? What will these be?

There is more to life/cyberlife than making a buck. Why not keep your day job and stop trying to squeeze every nickel out of a website that you possibly can. Even if you become successful enough to quit your day job by showing your man boobs on a web cam… it won't be long until you are wishing you could quit your netjob for the next green pasture. (this message is not directed at Chris, but rather to everyone pasting damn ads onto their blogs — please stop trying to make “revenue” by providing “content”.. I'm sorry, but what you had for breakfast and your latest rant on politics isn't revenu worthy.

Making money blogging is great! But that obviously doesn't mean that every way of making money blogging is great. Marc's proposal, even with all the transparency he's built in, still will, imo, make blogs less trustworthy. And what's blogging good for if it's not trustworthy?
Those are my two cents…which, unfortunately, is still more than I've ever earned by blogging : (
