Open Source Social Networking
Lockergnome subscriber Sean Norton asks:
Are you aware of any open source web social networking software out there that is similar to myspace and user friendly for all levels of computer skills. I’ve been working on getting the alumni association for my chapter of TKE fraternity online and interactive. I’d considered using a standard static website model with just some mailing list options for group mailings, mainly to save on snail mail postage for newsletters and avoid maintaining a list of e-mail addresses myself. I’d love to have a customizable bulletin board with individual personal profile options like Myspace offers. Many of us already use myspace, but that’s just the younger computer oriented guys, and I’d like something even the octagenarians of the group could successfuly master or at least futz their way through without barraging me with questions. I checked out a freeware app called Joomla but it wasn’t quite what I wanted.
What about Ning?

Chris Pirillo Compartelo

The problem with Ning is that it is ad supported and if you want to use it without that (so you can add your own ads) you have to pay.
As for People Aggregator, you have to have PHP 5 on your server and in my case, there was an extension not installed so now I am waiting for the host to let me know if they can install it or not. It was the XSL extension, by the way.

All in PHP and open source

It’s not an open source platform, per se, but the Small World Labs set of online community platforms is based on the LAMP open source software stack, but it’s a software as a service offering. Our delivery model is to combine our software with our expertise in helping companies and organizations to achieve vibrant communities. We’ve found that having interesting social networking software only part of the solution. A big part of the overall success component is how to make certain that the social network is configured with your target audience in mind, and that you are engaging in the right mix of community building activities. It’s critical to create an effective plan and to keep the best interests of your members in mind in doing so. We just hosted a panel at SXSW Online Communities That Work that featured a host of community building experts discussing this.

Just wanted to add that CivicSpace is not open source, they charge for it, so it shouldn’t be listed
Another possibility..

Just released in March of 2008, Lovd by Less is a free open source social networking platform built with ruby on rails. There isn’t a ton of support because it was built after client demand. The google group is alive and well for it though if you need some help. Hope you like it!

What about ELGG? It’s open source, and looks pretty good at first glance. Anyone using it?

At my knowledge the most popular open source social networking site is GROU.PS (http://grou.ps) – Alexa also says that. They are one of the top 6000 sites.

I have elgg running now, all works fine but picture uploads as something with GD library prevent pics from uploading.
They are going to be using imagemagic in about 2 weeks or so and then the software will be fine. its up running now on my website.
