“I went through the same nonsense with Dell just a few weeks ago. Try going to the UPS site and choose to track using order number. When I put in my order number from Dell, I got the info. When I finally did receive the items, it took Dell 2 weeks more to finally email me that it was shipped. It's a shame, since I love their machines (desktop and laptop).”

“I just bought 2 Dells and ran into the same problem on tracking via the web page. When I called the support line and entered the order number, I was actually able to get the tracking number there. Maybe you already tried that; just thought I'd suggest.” [NOTE: nobody should have to do this.]

“I had a similar problem with Dell. But I had three items and one had no tracking number. I could trace the three through UPS but the one was going nowhere. After I got the delivery of the two I called UPS and they said that had billing information to pick up all three items but Dell only had two. Next I called Dell. They said UPS picked it up but didn't log all of them in. So where is it? Lucky for me Dell was kind to ship out another one. I got it in two working days… they shipped it over night. Less chance of getting lost.”

“I ordered one from Dell in December myself, and they did the SAME exact thing to me. First off, don't worry about it. The thing will show up very shortly. Mine kept saying “In transit to carrier” and then it just showed up at my doorstep. I know, Dell sucks… but unfortunately they are still the best out there as far as PC systems are concerned. I have a feeling my next desktop will be self built for a change.”

“I ordered an Optiplex system last week, and I also noticed the 'in transit to carrier' status. I think this is new, because I have never seen it before.”

“I have been a loyal Dell owner for almost a year, and have recommended Dell to my friends and neighbors (dangerous, because if it breaks – guess who has to fix it), however, I too am going through the same experience you are going through, no order number, no way to track where the machine is, etc. I finally got an email confirming I had actually placed an order, but the ship date was 1/29! This is a business computer, so the business kinds of needs their computer a little sooner than a month after I ordered it. The Gateway Store down the street is looking better and better.”

“Chris, we ordered from Dell twice recently and had the same problem with the Order Status-Tracking system online. If if makes you feel any better the Notebook showed up even though no tracking number ever appeared. So far it seems to only affect the notebook shipments for some reason.”

I have three Dells here in the house and when I was the Admin at the last job I made sure we bought Dell. Out of 25 systems that I have ordered for various places in the US and Canada, Dell screwed up once. Mind you, it was a good screw-up. First of all, because the company was new (and also a future dot-bomb) Dell wanted the money up front so we paid via a credit card. Dell didn't tell us that one system was on a card without the room for it so nothing for 10 days. I finally called them and asked about the system. So we put it on a new card and Dell speed production. Now this laptop is supposed to go to Miami but Dell send it to somewhere in Texas (can't remember exactly) and it takes another 2 and a half weeks to get sent correct. Sigh, sometimes one mistake is only the start of things. Now with all that said, I still recommend Dell as I have a 3 year old Dimension XPS P2-400 that has run rock solid. The laptops, in general, are well-built too and the tech support has been much better than any time I have had to spend on Apple or HP products.
